They never should have changed Superman! He was fine just the way he was! He no longer has those bold colors that made him look more approachable and nicer! Superman stood for Justice and he always looked nice and this new suit makes him look dark and not even like a super hero anymore! Some people say that now he looks like a real superhero, but I completely disagree! HE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A REAL SUPERHERO AT ALL ANYMORE!! THEY KILLED SUPERMAN!!

The trunks are not a big deal, I can understand traditional Superman fans wanting to keep them, but sometimes change is good. As far as the comics I’m sure they will return in one way or another. I do agree that something has to be put in place to separate all that blue in the movie costume, unless we just don’t see it.

I like the new look. If the goal is to make Superman a character in a contemporary world, then there’s no reason he’d have that “iconic” costume people want to associate with him, unless the writers come up with a reason *in-story* why someone in 2011 would want to design a costume based on a circus strongman from the 1930s.

The reason everyone liked the Christopher Reeve costume is because it WAS the Superman costume. It was bright red, blue, and yellow with everything where it was supposed to be. I am willing to accept a few changes in the suit, providing they were actual improvements, but the red trunks are iconic. They need to be there. I did not like the Superman Returns costume for several reasons.They made the “S” too small, the collar too tight, and the colors too dull
I have hope for this movie, but the reason everyone liked Christopher Reeve’s performance is because he played Superman as someone who genuinely wanted to help others. Not as some depressed, emo, deadbeat dad (Thank you Bryan Singer).

I don’t know where this ‘the public accepts it cus of its history’ nonsense comes from. the public makes fun of it all the damn time. the classic look is cheesy and everyone says so.

And once again people are judging the costume before they see how it looks in film. All this stuff about needing the trunks to break up the color is nonsense. The Flash has never needed more than a belt, neither have tons of other characters.

From the first shot with the vault, it looks like it’s yellow/gold.

No, that’s not what anyone associates with the classic Superman, just like the gun-wielding Batman from the first few years isn’t what anyone considers classic Batman.

The point is, Superman is the single most iconic superhero of all time, and in all his most popular incarnations, the classic elements have been present in some form or another. The length of the cape, the color of the blue, the size of the S-shield, etc, have all varied a little, but when you remove the trunks entirely, it’s like tearing the stars off the American flag, serving a crust-less apple pie, or playing baseball without the bats. It’s just not Superman without the trunks.

Glad to see the trunks gone. I’ve been reading comic books since I learned to read, and I’ve got no problem with some updates to the Superman look–or would people prefer the original all-yellow “S” and blue ballet slippers from his very first appearances? Heck, why not just depower him while we’re at it–isn’t that all part of the “classic” Supes?

Sheesh.

it doesnt completely suck. but the S needs to be bigger. if hhe isnt going to have anything from his nips to his knees but blueness, then give him the Alex Ross “S” that takes up his whole chest and most of his torso.the lack of drawers and a belt makes the S look slightly out of place. like it waas thrown on just to have “Something on the Blue”

That’s not a problem. There are so few people reading these comics today, particularly Superman, that those fans really don’t matter. Look at how Michael Bay alienated the vast majority of Transformers fans and made a massively successful series of movies. Similarly, comic book fans were ready to crucify Tim Burton over the costume, Michael Keaton, etc, but those movies did great. Big box office these days comes from family/mainstream audiences.

It looks like Ultraman. Period. Non-comics readers will at worst go, “Hmmm. They did something different.” Readers will look at it and say, “Why did they give Superman his evil counterpart’s costume?”, and be annoyed at best, POed at worst. And if you, DC, Warner, Nolan, Snyder, or anyone else thinks that you can make a hit out of a comic book property without the readers on board, think again.

By the way, how is Ultraman going to look if he appears in the DCnU? Will he have the red trunks to differentiate him from Superman (essentially a vice-versa flip), or will they now have to do something more hokey like reversing the colors on his suit?

Really not feeling the new costume, and they should really lose the cape on Faora.
That said, I’m just hoping that they do the battles justice in this film.
We have insanely powerful characters..I want to see some destruction in this film when they fight! Otherwise, don’t bother making a sequel!

Nolan handed the reins over to Snyder ages ago. There’s no indication that he’s going to be involved in any capacity, or that he really has had much – if anything – to do with the project at all. Nolan has his hands full with the next Batman movie. It looks like WB just want his name attached as an executive producer to fool audiences into thinking it’s “from the people who brought you Batman”. Make no mistake, though, this is a Zach Snyder film.

I really don’t like the suit without the red trunks. It looks like the long john pajamas my grandad used to wear in the winter. I prefer the classic look.

I’m excited for the film release. I trust Chris Nolan to shepherd a film that will be entertaining to a new audience.
I also think Zack Snyder could pull off a good film, more so if he is kept on a leash

However I just think that its weird looking without the red trunks. Look in the shops at the costumes for sale. Superman has red and blue for his suit.
It’s in the public consciousness that Superman wears red trunks, the whole change is interesting in a comic book. But to the wider audience what has been available for them to see is whats been out longer than they have been alive, its accepted as fact almost now.

Ask any friend of yours to describe the costume (not their opinion) and it will be the same answer. Yeah it is funny looking, and yes it does look ridiculous in real life. However to me it makes sense as a story idea.

Superman can (depending on strength levels) tear the world in half or hold up a small island, trunks on the outside just makes him not so terrifying to the people of Metropolis.

Or at least its my opinion, thats all that matters to me. Still looking forward to it, hope for the best and plan for the worst is my saying.

In that eventuality I have the 78 Supes ready and waiting for an 8 hour marathon

I am on the want-the-shorts-back side. I never thought of it as underwear, and it never bothered me. He now does resemble Ultraman. I wonder if they considered making his pants red all the up and down? I do think the texture of the costume will be better looking than spandex, but I also agree that it’s a few shades too dark.

Can’t we just all agree to disagree without resorting to insults?

I’m neutral, I could care less either way. I like the red trunks, but I think that idea was from another era. Superman is 73 years old or something like that. Times have changed. What was passable in the 1930′s or 1940′s doesn’t work now. Maybe a mix of both? Who says Superman has to wear one costume. The iconic image of Superman isn’t going anywhere. This one will be forgotten and just seen as something different, not as the real Superman.

I thought the lack of trunks would bother me but it doesn’t. I think it all looks good, much better than Captain America’s awfull costume in the new Avengers film!!!
I never really understood why Supermans costume attracted so much attention when Batman’s hasn’t been the same from one film to the next and rarely the same as the comics (at the time of each movie). In fact (probably) the only time Batmans costme looked like the comics was the old Adam West TV series!!!
