New MAN OF STEEL Set Photo Shows No Red Trunks

August 24th, 2011
Author Lucas Siegel

When the shadowy first image showed up from Superman: Man of Steel, we wondered, along with many fans, if the well-placed shadow was hiding the red trunks or not. Turns out, not.

The image, from Superhero Hype (click the name for a couple more), shows clearly that like his DC “New 52″ counterpart, the new movie Superman will not have red trunks as part of his costume. On the right side of the image is the black-clad villainess Faora of Krypton, as well. The guy between them dressed like Metamorpho is likely not, but dang, that’s uncanny isn’t it?

So what do you think now that we can see the full costume clearly, folks?

  1. Will Says:

Picture’s pretty fuzzy being that far away. I’d hardly call it clear.

  2. Ken Says:

Seeing the “all blue” version in real life makes this version even worse than I first thought. I think it needs the red shorts and yellow belt to break up the costume.

  3. Charlie Says:

He looks naked without the red. Why would they do that to the most iconic costume in all of comics? Bad move.

  4. Brian Says:

It needs a belt to break up all the blue, however Im THRILLED there’s no red diaper.

  5. Fluffy6079 Says:

Thank God they got rid of the briefs.

  6. Kris Says:

I’d rather see a better quality photo, and the costume in action, before I pass judgement. But I kinda like it. If they had done the red pants I’d have preferred them in the Superman 1,000,000 style. Never had time for any of the yellow in the Superman costume.

  7. Mavrik Says:

He needs the red trunks in the comics and the movie. Superman does not translate well to the real world. He never has. So to try to modernize him in the comics or to make a more realistic version of him in the movies is impossible. Not without completely changing his look and at that point he’s no longer Superman.

There’s talk about the “Aquaman not being a real superhero” jokes being in the new 52 lineup (similar to Family Guy making jokes about him) which I kind of like the idea. Why can’t they do something similar with Superman in the comics? The red trunks are dated, and they may even be cheesy… but why not keep them and acknowledge that they are cheesy? He needs him so they should just make it a running joke… like PowerGirl’s boobs. They all comment on it and she pretty much tell people to get over it.

As far as the movies go? Superman doesn’t fit into the real world. My theory for years is they should try to put a Superman movie together in all CGI. That’s going to be the best way to bring them to the big screen. In my opinion at least.

  8. Wil Hatchel Says:

He has a belt on the costume you cant see it in this image.

  9. Alexander Luthor Says:

Wow, between the comics and the movie, they’ve managed to make Superman look like his own evil counterpart (Ultraman).

    That’s a GREAT sign…

    [/sarcasm]

  10. Jeez Uz Says:

FINALLY! The hell with the red undies, I say! A new Superman’s in town!

I really don’t get why people make a big deal about Supes not having the red undies. What is with this fetiche about the trunks. I get it from gay geeks, but I doubt all the detractors ARE gay, so whats up with that?

btw, I’m gay too, and even I hated the briefs….

  11. evilwilma Says:

Ummmm, the guy who ‘looks like Metamorpho’ is just in a motion-capture harness, right?

Admittedly, I don’t see the resemblance to Metamorpho.

Personal jury’s still out on the Supersuit, but I don’t hate what I’ve seen so far. I do think the cape’s a smidge too long, but I can deal if the story works.

  12. Guy Gardner Says:

just reminds me of Vegeta’s later DBZ costume…but with red boots, no gloves, and a cape

but I’m more concerned why I see Smallville stuff in the background….after 10 years of the tv show, I wanna see Metropolis and only Metropolis :p

  13. turkish101 Says:

Huh. I figured the whole costume would be added in with a green screen.

Ahem. The problem with this is that it looks like a jump suit, like your janitor is wearing a red cape. Red briefs on the outside might be stupid, but this is worse.

  14. NeoSamurai Says:

It’s not so much the briefs he needs but something to break the blue–like red ribbing or a big belt. as it stands it looks boring (then again, most fashion below the belt tends to be ‘boring’ except for accessories). although in its defense, I do see how placing all the color/action of the costume on his upper-body draws an audience’s attention to that portion of his anatomy. it says ‘Look at me and don’t let your eyes wander!’

  15. Shon Says:

I don’t like change, but change happens. We need to get over it. Ususally we say change doesn’t work because we “resist” change. Christopher Reeves to me will always be the true movie Superman. I don’t anything about the new actor. To kids today however, they may love him, his costume and probably wouldn’t want to see the 1977 costume in this new movie. In 1977, we wouldn’t want to see the costume from the 1950′s TV show.
In comics, the 1939 Superman is classic. The Silver age 1950′s Superman is one of a kind, but who would want to see (particularly kids) the Superman “feel” that they told back then. Those stories are classic, but change happens.

  16. Charles Ingalls' Pal Merlin Olsen! Says:

I love the way the suit looks without the red trunks, and I’m a longtime die-hard Superman fan. I could go either way on the trunks, but at the end of all things, the loss of them doesn’t bother me at all. Just takes getting used to. I do think there should be something red and yellow there like a strip of belt going toward the buckle or something, but there is some kind of lining there leading to that buckle. Looks like it’s the same as the lining going down the sides of his legs and on the cuffs of his sleeves. If you look at the recently released picture of Cavill in the suit in front of the vault door, you may make out that lining as well as a bit of that lining surrounding the symbol on his chest and the flared collar where his cape is coming off of.

As for the cape’s length, I’m betting once the wind machines kick-on it’ll look incredibly cool! Also glad they didn’t try to force a spit curl on Cavill. Only Christopher Reeve could pull it off, possibly also Kirk Alyn in the 40s movie serials. I HATED Brandon Routh’s stunt spit curl that was added to his already NOT Superman haircut with the too steep of a hairy skislope! LOL!

The S symbol looks to be a cross between Earth-2 Superman and Kingdom Come Superman’s. I don’t mind the texture of the suit, really. Probably Kryptonian fabric or something. Besides, even without that texturing you’d still see the fanboys instead whining that it’s too smooth! Hahaha!

Like the look of Faora! Love they gave her a cape with the black armor. Like an evil opposite of Superman theme. I’d wager that the guy walking next to her will be a cgi Non more derived from the Last Son storyline from Geoff Johns/Richard Donner/Adam Kubert’s Action Comics run. Notice that guy in the motion capture suit walking next to Faora has a stick coming from his head? Notice how Superman’s looking up at the top of that stick? Cgi character, obviously and a huge one at that!

  17. Charles Ingalls' Pal Merlin Olsen! Says:

P.S. Superman’s looking up at the top of the stick on that motion capture guy’s head in one of the other pics released along with this one. ;)

  18. Nate H Says:

I think it’s fine – it just takes some getting used to. But it’s WAY more logical. the underwear-outside-the-pants look would never fly (no pun intended) in real life, so it makes sense to do away with them. Batman has had black trunks forever, but he hasn’t had them in the movies since before Tim Burton’s Batman. People will get over it.

The only parts of the costume that are vitally important are the S symbol on his chest and the cape. This version has both, so I’m good.

  19. Freight Says:

I agree that the red trunks don’t do well on film, but there has to be something else on there. The solid blue from chest to boots is too overwhelming and needs other colors. And since this is a move, there’s room for improvisation. A belt or something…

  20. Skyhawk Says:

I think comics (males heroes anyway)are slowly moving away from underwear on the outside. Batman, Superman, Green Lantern just to name off the top of my head have ditched them.

  21. David Fullam Says:

Epic fail. Give it up DC.

  22. BirdoPairadice Says:

Looks like I always wanted it to! No diaper on the outside for when the circus strongman poops himself when maxing out a gigantic barbell!

  23. BirdoPairadice Says:

The design doesn’t need anything “breaking up the costume” in the middle. You’re all really used to the image of Christopher Reeve in your head and you strive to preserve it. Me, too. But times change, and the circus gear has got to go. 0 relevance today.

  24. BirdoPairadice Says:

And look at that package! Breaks it up just fine.

  25. turkish101 Says:

Also consider that we may not even see very many full body shots of Superman for any extended period of time. These folks are embarrassed to make a superhero movie, just as Nolan (smartly) rarely gave us a good glimpse of Batman, because that costume looks ridiculous in the light.

  26. David A. Says:

I think this film will be epically bad. I’m talking back on the level of the failed Superman Sequels in pre-production in the late 90s and early 2000s. Captain America’s modern day costume in the upcoming AVENGERS film is actually a better approach to a superman costume. This just looks bad.

  27. Kyle Says:

love love love it. i actually prefer it sans belt, and seriously hope the comic follows suit. pun intended.

  28. CT Says:

I don’t mind not having the red shorts but why does the blue uniform have to be so dark?!? I thought that was one of the problems with Superman Returns and now we have the same hue in the Man of Steel. I think the movie will be too dark. This is not the Dark Knight. Personally I prefer to lighter blue that Chris wore.

  29. Mike Says:

    This film is D.O.A.

Doesn’t matter what you kids think. Superman wears red undies on the outside. He has for seventy years. That’s the image people have when they think “Superman.” Get over it.

While we’re at it…the fake muscles don’t do any favors. (Yeah, yeah, go on – tell me how built Cavill is – sure.)

    Neither does the origin-centric plot.

    Nor the whole let’s-reboot-Zod dullness.

Oh, I should mention…The director’s one of the worst currently working in Hollywood, too.

None of this is Superman’s or DC Comics’ fault. We live in really unimaginative times, and Hollywood caters to the ADD-afflicted.

MAN OF STEEL is gonna make GREEN LANTERN look like a masterpiece.

It’ll probably be a bigger disappointment than THE AVENGERS, even.

(Oh, they’re all gonna type bad things about me now!)

  30. mk Says:

Looking good. No more stupid red underwear.

  31. MOTA Says:

Well for one thing this is hardly a clear image. — really clear image? You people really are idiots.

Secondly for the last 20 comics press and fans have been doing fan pics and taking about losing the red trunks… then they do it and people bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitc…. and then they bitch again…

    Just SHUT UP already

  32. crusader k Says:

I want the trunks. They’ve been there for 70 years. What does that tell you? “Classic”.

In other news, anyone notice the lettering on the side of the truck says “The Smallville Sentinel”?

  33. Dan Says:

The reason the briefs should stay is they are part of the original SUPERMAN outfit since 1938. Also in 1938 there was no”S” on the cape so I agree with the move not to put an “S” on the cape. From what I have seen so far, the SUPERMAN Returns costume looked much beeter than this one but I will reserve judgement until we can see some real pictures of the costume.

  34. Unit_99 Says:

LOVE IT!!!!!! SUPERMAN looks so more SUPER!!! Quit hating on DC Comics! :)

  35. oslo Says:

I love those GIANT HEELS that shrimpy Cavill has to wear. LOL.
HAHAHA What a clusterfk this is turning out to be.

  36. MadCat Says:

    Umm…ain’t working for me.

  37. Kel-El Says:

Thank God they got rid of the red undies.
They’re just embarrassing, and I can’t see any 21st century male (in or out of Kansas) wearing red briefs over his tights anymore.

  38. Kal-El wears red trunks Says:

Sorry, that looks ridiculous. the classic suit is iconic and the public accepts it because of its history. Only a complete loser would prefer this.

  39. Andy Says:

New superman movies aren’t for old fans. It’s not about John Williams music, Christopher Reeve or red underwear. Its about American mythology retold for contemporary audiences and, in particular, kids. That’s when the “old” fans fell in love with it. That’s when you went and saw “superman” and got this feeling like it was made just for you. Because it was. The kids were denied that experience in “superman returns” so now, it’s their turn. So it should be.

  40. yum Says:

    I LOVE THE STILETTO HEELS!!!

Hooker Superman vs the Human Fly is the best thing that has ever happened!

You old fans need to stop complaining. Young people understand that newspapers don’t pay anything nowadays, and Superman has to earn money where he can, even if that means picking up tricks on street corners. Shinny high heeled Superman is sexy!

  41. @The_Nicktator Says:

Getting rid of the tights is okay in the books, because we all know why. But the majority of movie-goers likely have no idea that DC changed things. They’ll just wonder why Superman doesn’t have the red tights; it might keep people away.

  42. Comic2read Says:

Looks more like Ultraman. Costumes should have been cotton. Plastic looks reptilian.

  43. turkish101 Says:

Also consider: he’s still in Smallville. Maybe his costume evolves in the movie? Though it’s hard to imagine a scene where he decides to actually add red briefs to the outside of his costume. But knowing Snyder, it will be fetishized in slow motion with a green screen.

  44. manolis vamvounis Says:

    look Ma, no pants!

    dirty foreigners…

  45. Paul Says:

You know what’s cool? Not givin’ a shit.

Silly red underpants is the apex of not givin’ a shit.

  46. Joey K Says:

    I see a Super Package.

  47. killorson Says:

Glad there are no more skimpy panties. Still, the pants should be a little looser or they should put loose, knee length red shorts there. The idea of getting rid of the shorts is to take attention away from that area. If a female superheroine movie came out and the female was treated like this, Green Lantern, or a Vampire, we’d never hear the end of it from the hypocrites.

  48. Mike Says:

He definitely needs the red shorts!!!! This looks really bad!!!

    Mike

  49. xkot Says:

No matter how good this movie winds up being — and it may be the ne plus ultra of Superman films! — I will only ever be able to say, at best, “Snyder’s SUPERMAN is cinematic brilliance … too bad they didn’t get the costume right.”

  50. MYK'L Says:

The CGI character is most likely NON – the character never speaks so he is not ‘cast’.

  51. Kooster Says:

I’m not too concerned about the Superman costume, as superhero costumes change from comic book to the big screen. I just want the new Superman movie to be way better than the last effort!

  52. misterknowitall Says:

Sorry, but that’s Ultraman, it’s not Superman. No good. NEXT!

  53. Andrew Whitworth Says:

It looks so boring. At least the reboot costume has a red belt. Superman’s suit was never that exciting looking to begin with and they stripped it down even more. I’m getting the same vibe off of this as the new Spider-man. It just looks wrong. The character gets lost in the design. And why is it so hard to put a symbol on the cape? I always thought that was one of the coolest features of his suit.

  54. Soundwar Says:

At first I thought, no way – iconic costume! Then I saw it and thought, it makes sense! When people think of him changing, they think of a blurred tornado. But if you think about it, come on. Is he actually going to spend the extra nanosecond to put underwear and a not-needed belt over his tights? That should be the storyline of why he ditches his reds… “sorry I couldn’t save your planet, I had to put my belt on…

  55. keiran Says:

The all blue doesn’t really bother me i mean when you see superman defeating a monster or villain you wonder why his trunks are on the outside which looks fine in comics but a bit silly in live action.

The costume is based on the new costume from DCs new 52 line up, but i wish they include his belt, his suit looks abit bare without it.

  56. Jeanette Sayqua Says:

I’m glad we can finally get a clearer outline of his manhood. The red briefs obscured my visual lovemaking.

  57. James Says:

His trunks will be added with CGI….

  58. Shawn Says:

The only reason things change is so a big deal can be made when they get changed back. Give it a year or 2. The red shorts will reappear. I guarantee it.

  59. Bennett Says:

I like it…I really do. No more cheesy undies to play tricks with the mind…just a solid outfit to call home. Awesome!

  60. Zagreus Says:

    @Andy

You are EXACTLY right. Superman Returns was a homage to the old movies. But the new generation needs a Superman they can relate to. Most of them think the red undies are corny. Hell I think they’re corny. Look at this board, most FANS are split… now go to the general public, who need to be SOLD on Superman, who may be indifferent may be looking at him as “the man” and “uncool”. Red undies are just one more thing. Take them away, and he’s a little cooler, a little more with the times. And that, my friends, is a good thing.

  61. Pat Says:

I don’t know what to think. Superman is an icon and the red briefs are part of that icon and he can for some odd reason sport that look. Then again a change is sometimes needed. I am giving this new look a chance eventhough I am not sold on it
    .

  62. misterknowitall Says:

“His trunks will be added with CGI….”

Yes, they will be played by Andy Sirkis. :)

  63. SET Says:

Yea. Always thought that trunks looked well….stupid. Why the hell did they ever have them on the outside? Made no sense. Break up all that blue??? Huh?? Man plz!!

  64. Norman Says:

I thought the lack of trunks would bother me but it doesn’t. I think it all looks good, much better than Captain America’s awfull costume in the new Avengers film!!!
I never really understood why Supermans costume attracted so much attention when Batman’s hasn’t been the same from one film to the next and rarely the same as the comics (at the time of each movie). In fact (probably) the only time Batmans costme looked like the comics was the old Adam West TV series!!!

  65. Roy Says:

    I’m still hooked.

  66. The Zug Says:

So Ultraman is the supervillain in the movie?

Seriously, the problem with getting rid of the red trunks is that it just doesn’t look like Superman anymore.

  67. Cæu Says:

No red trunks? Who cares! When Ultraman finally shows up in the DCnU, HE will have red trunks!

…And as for those who are saying the movie sucks and is an epic fail here in Summer 2011? You know NOTHING yet. All of that negativity is in your own minds. Wait and see before you convict.

  68. Rick Says:

I’m neutral, I could care less either way. I like the red trunks, but I think that idea was from another era. Superman is 73 years old or something like that. Times have changed. What was passable in the 1930′s or 1940′s doesn’t work now. Maybe a mix of both? Who says Superman has to wear one costume. The iconic image of Superman isn’t going anywhere. This one will be forgotten and just seen as something different, not as the real Superman.

  69. J. K. Says:

I am on the want-the-shorts-back side. I never thought of it as underwear, and it never bothered me. He now does resemble Ultraman. I wonder if they considered making his pants red all the up and down? I do think the texture of the costume will be better looking than spandex, but I also agree that it’s a few shades too dark.

Can’t we just all agree to disagree without resorting to insults?

  70. oldhope001 Says:

I’m excited for the film release. I trust Chris Nolan to shepherd a film that will be entertaining to a new audience.
I also think Zack Snyder could pull off a good film, more so if he is kept on a leash :)

However I just think that its weird looking without the red trunks. Look in the shops at the costumes for sale. Superman has red and blue for his suit.
It’s in the public consciousness that Superman wears red trunks, the whole change is interesting in a comic book. But to the wider audience what has been available for them to see is whats been out longer than they have been alive, its accepted as fact almost now.

Ask any friend of yours to describe the costume (not their opinion) and it will be the same answer. Yeah it is funny looking, and yes it does look ridiculous in real life. However to me it makes sense as a story idea.

Superman can (depending on strength levels) tear the world in half or hold up a small island, trunks on the outside just makes him not so terrifying to the people of Metropolis.

Or at least its my opinion, thats all that matters to me. Still looking forward to it, hope for the best and plan for the worst is my saying.

In that eventuality I have the 78 Supes ready and waiting for an 8 hour marathon :)

  71. MilanosS Says:

I really don’t like the suit without the red trunks. It looks like the long john pajamas my grandad used to wear in the winter. I prefer the classic look.

  72. Allamerican Says:

Those pics prove the “new look” looks even worse live than in the upcoming comics.

  73. misterknowitall Says:

“I trust Chris Nolan to shepherd a film…”

Nolan handed the reins over to Snyder ages ago. There’s no indication that he’s going to be involved in any capacity, or that he really has had much – if anything – to do with the project at all. Nolan has his hands full with the next Batman movie. It looks like WB just want his name attached as an executive producer to fool audiences into thinking it’s “from the people who brought you Batman”. Make no mistake, though, this is a Zach Snyder film.

  74. Christian Says:

Really not feeling the new costume, and they should really lose the cape on Faora.
That said, I’m just hoping that they do the battles justice in this film.
We have insanely powerful characters..I want to see some destruction in this film when they fight! Otherwise, don’t bother making a sequel!

  75. Pennyforth Says:

It looks like Ultraman. Period. Non-comics readers will at worst go, “Hmmm. They did something different.” Readers will look at it and say, “Why did they give Superman his evil counterpart’s costume?”, and be annoyed at best, POed at worst. And if you, DC, Warner, Nolan, Snyder, or anyone else thinks that you can make a hit out of a comic book property without the readers on board, think again.

By the way, how is Ultraman going to look if he appears in the DCnU? Will he have the red trunks to differentiate him from Superman (essentially a vice-versa flip), or will they now have to do something more hokey like reversing the colors on his suit?

  76. misterknowitall Says:

“And if you, DC, Warner, Nolan, Snyder, or anyone else thinks that you can make a hit out of a comic book property without the readers on board, think again.”

That’s not a problem. There are so few people reading these comics today, particularly Superman, that those fans really don’t matter. Look at how Michael Bay alienated the vast majority of Transformers fans and made a massively successful series of movies. Similarly, comic book fans were ready to crucify Tim Burton over the costume, Michael Keaton, etc, but those movies did great. Big box office these days comes from family/mainstream audiences.

  77. kolbey989 Says:

it doesnt completely suck. but the S needs to be bigger. if hhe isnt going to have anything from his nips to his knees but blueness, then give him the Alex Ross “S” that takes up his whole chest and most of his torso.the lack of drawers and a belt makes the S look slightly out of place. like it waas thrown on just to have “Something on the Blue”

  78. photonex68 Says:

Based on other pics, it looks like he does have some kind of belt, but I can’t tell if it’s red or blue.

Glad to see the trunks gone. I’ve been reading comic books since I learned to read, and I’ve got no problem with some updates to the Superman look–or would people prefer the original all-yellow “S” and blue ballet slippers from his very first appearances? Heck, why not just depower him while we’re at it–isn’t that all part of the “classic” Supes?

    Sheesh.

  79. misterknowitall Says:

“Based on other pics, it looks like he does have some kind of belt, but I can’t tell if it’s red or blue.”

From the first shot with the vault, it looks like it’s yellow/gold.

“or would people prefer the original all-yellow “S” and blue ballet slippers…”

No, that’s not what anyone associates with the classic Superman, just like the gun-wielding Batman from the first few years isn’t what anyone considers classic Batman.

The point is, Superman is the single most iconic superhero of all time, and in all his most popular incarnations, the classic elements have been present in some form or another. The length of the cape, the color of the blue, the size of the S-shield, etc, have all varied a little, but when you remove the trunks entirely, it’s like tearing the stars off the American flag, serving a crust-less apple pie, or playing baseball without the bats. It’s just not Superman without the trunks.

  80. Impossiblepie Says:

this movie has “Superman Returns” written all over it.

  81. Kyle Says:

its evolution baby. from the superman 2000 pitch, “Finally, Superman’s smart enough to wear his shorts UNDER his pants.”

nobody is pretending this change will last forever, but man will i love it while it does.

  82. petes12 Says:

I don’t know where this ‘the public accepts it cus of its history’ nonsense comes from. the public makes fun of it all the damn time. the classic look is cheesy and everyone says so.

And once again people are judging the costume before they see how it looks in film. All this stuff about needing the trunks to break up the color is nonsense. The Flash has never needed more than a belt, neither have tons of other characters.

  83. RabidRob101 Says:

The reason everyone liked the Christopher Reeve costume is because it WAS the Superman costume. It was bright red, blue, and yellow with everything where it was supposed to be. I am willing to accept a few changes in the suit, providing they were actual improvements, but the red trunks are iconic. They need to be there. I did not like the Superman Returns costume for several reasons. They made the “S” too small, the collar too tight, and the colors too dull
I have hope for this movie, but the reason everyone liked Christopher Reeve’s performance is because he played Superman as someone who genuinely wanted to help others. Not as some depressed, emo, deadbeat dad (Thank you Bryan Singer).

  84. friendlyfire Says:

This new look is awesome!Superman has never looked better! :)

  85. Jorge Says:

This looks like a rubber suit with fake muscles. Way to go DC…
This reminds me of the failed Wonder Woman series…a flop!

  86. tony Says:

    captain marvel jr. anyone

  87. tony Says:

    http://www.collectorsquest.com/collectible/1393/shazam-ser-1-dr-sivana-captain-marvel-jr

  88. photonex68 Says:

I like the new look. If the goal is to make Superman a character in a contemporary world, then there’s no reason he’d have that “iconic” costume people want to associate with him, unless the writers come up with a reason *in-story* why someone in 2011 would want to design a costume based on a circus strongman from the 1930s.

  89. dman Says:

The trunks are not a big deal, I can understand traditional Superman fans wanting to keep them, but sometimes change is good. As far as the comics I’m sure they will return in one way or another. I do agree that something has to be put in place to separate all that blue in the movie costume, unless we just don’t see it.

They never should have changed Superman! He was fine just the way he was! He no longer has those bold colors that made him look more approachable and nicer! Superman stood for Justice and he always looked nice and this new suit makes him look dark and not even like a super hero anymore! Some people say that now he looks like a real superhero, but I completely disagree! HE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A REAL SUPERHERO AT ALL ANYMORE!! THEY KILLED SUPERMAN!!
