You’ve seen Captain America come to life on the big screen thanks to director Joe Johnson and actor Chris Evans but that was a period piece. How will Cap look in modern times in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers film? Now we know.
Celebrity-Gossip.net captured pictures of the actor on set in Cleveland, Ohio recently where The Avengers has been filming. “The Captain America hunk donned a pair of sunglasses along with a black cloak as he shot scenes on the mock 42nd Street set,” they wrote. But of course, he did eventually have to take them off to shoot and that’s how we get our first look. Three more shots after the jump!
The look is definitely updated from what we saw in Captain America: The First Avenger but stays very close in aesthetics from that film, including the trademark wings on his helmet. It’s still a basic Kirby Cap suit when you get down to it with some slight nods to his Ultimates costume, the helmet similar to the one he wore in Captain America: Reborn.
As you can see in this image, there’s a flap open on the chest of the uniform. Like in the comics, the red-and-white stripe section looks to be a piece worn underneath the rest of the cosutme. I’m wondering if this this material means it’s much less armored than his previous suit. But could this be because Tony Stark has made some modifications that make the suit more maneuverable but just as tough? He was working on a shield in Iron Man 2 after all.
The website also managed to capture the actor in his “civilian” costume, presumably exploring “future” New York.
The Avengers, starring Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlet Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and more hits theaters May of 2012.

hmm…mask looks a little goofy. Otherwise, cool.
August 16th, 2011 at 3:27 pm
Those boots & gloves are pretty cool. It looks like the woman behind him likes how the outfit looks from the back….
August 16th, 2011 at 3:31 pm
Mmmhhh, well… looks all but definitve to me…
August 16th, 2011 at 3:36 pm
“But could this be because Tony Stark has made some modifications that make the suit more maneuverable but just as tough? He was working on a shield in Iron Man 2 after all.”
Actually Tony was not working on the Cap’s shield in Iron Man 2, he found it in a bunch of old S.H.I.E.L.D. junk and had used it haphazardly to support his modified power source/new element. The inclusion of the shield in Iron Man 2 was seen by many as a forced attempt to include a reference to “The Avengers” movie. You should know this and you should not perpetuate bad facts/analysis.
August 16th, 2011 at 3:43 pm
@wyatt_e, Ha! Nice catch.
August 16th, 2011 at 3:47 pm
Jtron: It was not in a pile of old SHIELD junk as that lab was Tony’s and not a SHIELD facility. Furthermore, Tony WAS working on it because it was seen on his work bench in Iron Man 1 in a scene that took place before he’d even formally met anyone from SHIELD other than Agent Caulson. Thirdly, Jon Favreau commented after Iron Man 1 that it was put there deliberately to show that Tony was trying to duplicate the famous shield and to reference Captain America had existed in the past and that they would reveal Howard Stark had been involved in Cap’s creation if Marvel ever got around to doing a Captain America film in the future. I can only assume the “many” who saw this as a forced attempt to include a reference means they or you didn’t know about the Easter egg in IRON MAN which this, and many sites, reported on in multiple articles and blog posts.
You should know this and you should not perpetuate bad/arrogant assumptions/comments. Jill actually does this thing called “fact-checking” before she says something. You’re welcome.
August 16th, 2011 at 4:02 pm
This is a terrible sentence: “As you can see in this image, there’s a flap open on the chest of the uniform, like in the comics, the red-and-white stripe section looks to be a piece worn underneath the rest of the costume.” There ought to be a full stop after “uniform,” with “Like” beginning a new sentence.
And…the suit is much better, but I still miss the pirate boots and flared gauntlets.
August 16th, 2011 at 4:07 pm
Thanks for catching my editing mistake Juss! Where should I send your check?
August 16th, 2011 at 4:09 pm
Cool. I didn’t mean any offense to Jill. But as for the shield in Iron Man 2, this was the part I was talking about:
http://www.mtv.com/videos/movies/511450/what-was-the-idea-behind-captain-americas-shield.jhtml#id=1638179.
Where I think Favreau is saying that it was in the first film as a joke (by an ILM artist), and that in Iron Man 2 they flesh it out more. Hence in the sequel where — according to Wikipedia: “In the 2010 film Iron Man 2, Tony Stark is building a particle accelerator in his home to create a new element for his arc reactor when S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson finds a prototype shield in a box and asks if Stark knows what it is. Stark ignores the question and asks him to hand the shield over, and uses it as a shim to level the accelerator.”
Easter Egg or no easter egg there is a thing call continuity and just because something is placed in a frame or in a shot does not mean we as the viewing audience must accept it. In no way will I accept that Tony Stark was “working on the shield” in Iron Man or Iron Man 2. I think at best it is debatable I felt the initial post failed to acknowledge (or was even aware) of the debate.
That is all I’m saying. Sorry to offend anyone.
August 16th, 2011 at 4:11 pm
The shield in Ironman is complete and the shield in Ironman 2 is a work in progress, I thought the shield came from the Howard Stark stuff, which would make sense in way with his inclusion in the origin of Captain America in the films.
August 16th, 2011 at 4:11 pm
Looking a lot goofier overall. A shame.
August 16th, 2011 at 4:41 pm
JTRON: So all your saying is that Jill was possibly ignorant of something you accept as fact. How is that not offensive or patronizing? She didn’t acknowledge it because it has nothing to do with these images. The purpose of this blog post was to ask what folks though about the new costume, not to debate on how much of the Avengers film continuity was planned or mapped out after Easter eggs were decided on.
As for for something being in shot being accepted, actually that’s one of the first rules of theater and film-making. If it’s on stage or on-screen, then it’s part of your story. And if you don’t accept that Tony was working on a replica of the shield, then you’re only making things more complicated for yourself. It was in his own lab in his own home and not in the footlocker given to him. And Caulson doesn’t ask if Stark knows what it is, he is surprised by the shield and asked if that is what he thinks it is. If you’re looking at Wikipedia as proof for an argument, I’m not sure you understand how Wikipedia works. Several comic book writers and I myself have been known to spend a night or two correcting many of their articles when it comes to comics and related movies. Anyone can come into a wikipedia article and change something in it because they think they’re right.
August 16th, 2011 at 4:41 pm
The suit looked Awesome at Comic-Con. I do have to say the metal zipper through the Red Stripe is somewhat distracting…a small point I know but just looks weird…otherwise I think the Armor (which it is) looks great!
August 16th, 2011 at 4:51 pm
I don’t know if it’s just his goofy grin in the first photo, but I agree that that mask makes him look dorky. Also not a big fan of the imprinted ears (either let them stick out slightly or just leave them off). The rest of the costume looks good, though.
August 16th, 2011 at 5:11 pm
jtron, did you have troubles with potty training? Because it shows…
August 16th, 2011 at 5:15 pm
This suit makes him look a lot smaller, imo.
August 16th, 2011 at 5:20 pm
Hey maybe its just the resolution of the of the first two pic’s but but I don’t like the helmet its to bulbus like something straight out of the cheesy 1991 cap flick or this summer’s Smurfs I miss the temple lines on the helmet that gave it a slimmer looking profile
August 16th, 2011 at 5:31 pm
I do think the new outfit looks even more dorky than the previous one. The silver strips just look goofy in my opinion. Hopefully the movie is a hit.
August 16th, 2011 at 5:45 pm
Suit looks terrible, especially with the mask on.
August 16th, 2011 at 5:51 pm
I love it personally, but then again I’m a Cap junkie
August 16th, 2011 at 5:56 pm
Man, Jill catches a lot of shit on these message boards. Homies need to chill out.
August 16th, 2011 at 6:06 pm
When I saw the first photo, I was reminded of the cheap suit he wore for his USO shows, or the costume in that other Captain AMerica movie… but the more I looked at the other pics it started to grow on me, so I’m excited to see it in the movie….
(I just hope Thor wears his helmet a bit more in the Avengers…)
August 16th, 2011 at 7:23 pm
I like it a lot.
From the looks of the men in CGI motion capture suits in the other shots, I assume he’s fighting Skrulls here?
And whoa, did Jill punch someone’s mother?
August 16th, 2011 at 8:18 pm
Doesn’t look good.
August 16th, 2011 at 9:09 pm
The mask looks just a bit funky to me but otherwise I think it will grow on me. I’m a huge Captain America fan and I’m sure that the mask will look fine by the time the movie is out.
August 16th, 2011 at 9:41 pm
Definetly a step in the right direction getting rid of the suspenders and chin strap.
August 16th, 2011 at 10:28 pm
I really dont think this is a definitive model… it looks too… half baked? I mean… something is missing….
August 16th, 2011 at 10:43 pm
Looks good without the mask in second to last pic. Otherwise the mask looks a bit goofy. Looks best from the side(the mask).
August 16th, 2011 at 10:52 pm
Couldn’t they modernize the outfit from the current movie? Take the same design and just update it instead of the radical result seen here? Personally, I like the suit from the current movie, as it seemed practical given the time frame that the movie is set. This “Avenger” version just looks cheap. It reminds me a lot of the ’91 movie costume and I was really expecting more. Thor’s suit, Iron Man’s armor, and Black Widow’s uniform look true to comics and realistic. Cap’s suit here looks like something you’d get at a Halloween Express store for trick-or-treating at a cost of $59.95!
August 16th, 2011 at 11:20 pm
I appreciate that they’re trying to make the costume like in contemporary comics. I do agree with others that the helmet wings should stick out (now, I don’t know if the wings are just drawn-on like that in the new storylines, because I don’t read the new ones). However, the images that I know of Captain America all have protruding wings. Although I was let down by the Captain America film, I hope The Avengers is fantastic. It is a real shame Norton’s not returning, though.
August 17th, 2011 at 12:11 am
Are these pictures all taken at the same time? The hair colour looks different in the civilian costume as compared to the captain shots
August 17th, 2011 at 3:51 am
The WWII costume looked better. This new one is okay, but I’m not feeling the helmet. In my opinion Anna Sheppard (costume designer for Cap) > Alexandra Byrne (costume designer for Thor and Avengers according to imdb), at least as far as Cap’s costumes go.
August 17th, 2011 at 5:46 am
If you watched the very end of Captain America he is already wearing this except the helmet nothing real new with these pics.
August 17th, 2011 at 6:16 am
Nice article, Jill. Thank you.
August 17th, 2011 at 6:29 am
What are those zippers on his legs? I think the “X-Men: First Class” uniforms had ‘em too, but they look kind of impractical for pockets.
Looks great, though!
August 17th, 2011 at 6:32 am
I think the costume looks pretty cool. It’ll look better in motion with the proper lighting etc.
As for the CA Shield controversy in IM2 – well I always thought that the shield was something that Tony or his father may have been working on in the past, and the fact that Tony DIDN’T treat it in a respectful manner was that he knew the real Captain America never used it. Of course after seeing the CA movie we know it was never a prototype, as it didn’t appear in the film as one of Steve’s choices (most of which were rectangular). It seems to be some form of continuity error know as I doubt the CA script was fully completed prior to filming that scene in IM2. Guess we’ll never know…
Of course it would be interesting to see if the IM2 shield was created for ANOTHER Captain America like the one from the 50′s.
August 17th, 2011 at 6:54 am
Approved! It’s as best as it can look while reflecting the comics and something someone in actual combat would wear. (And thank goodness there are no fish scales all over the shirt.) As far as the helmet/mask goes, let’s be honest; our heads are far rounder than we draw them in comic books, so naturally it’s going to look more bulbous. At least he’s not wearing a motorcycle helmet *ahem! ’70s crap with Reb Brown!*
August 17th, 2011 at 6:59 am
By the way, Fritz . . . that’s hilarious that someone with your name is a huge Captain America fan.
August 17th, 2011 at 8:11 am
From the photos, I’m glad that Cap can turn his head without having to do a full body turn.
August 17th, 2011 at 8:34 am
All it needs are the wings to stick out of the helmet, the buccaneer boots, the flared gauntlets and the chain mail look, and you’re pretty much in business! And shouldn’t the sleeves be partially white, as it normally looks like he’s wearing a long-sleeved white shirt underneath? And what are those strap things on his shoulders?
All in all, not too bad!
August 17th, 2011 at 9:06 am
I liked the WWII one better.
August 17th, 2011 at 10:35 am
What is with these reflective stripes all over his costume?
August 17th, 2011 at 10:41 am
I love the costumes of the Cap’n!
There’s mucho more imagination in all this, than in many nowadays books of literature!

OMG that looks like crap! The one from the Cap movie was awesome. They should have kept that. He at least looked manly. He looks like he is wearing a cheap halloween costume. I am seriously disappointed. And I am sorry but the girl is not looking at it in approval. She is thinking – I can’t believe he is wearing this outfit. This is bad. Why is the whites of the costume, gray/silver? Red White and Gray? I SAY RED WHITE AND GAY! Nice silver bar. If he is a Captain, they should have given him 2 bars vertical.
August 17th, 2011 at 6:55 pm
Anyone read the original New Avengers? (if not WHY not because you missed out there) anyway, the Cap’ drawn by David Finch is, when he’s dynamic, full of action and grace, far from goofy. But when he’s just stood around as a guy in a flag, the mask looks kinda like it does there, a bit odd and out of place.
I doubt he’ll be smiling in the actual shot that’s from, but if that’s what Cap’ looks like when he smiles…then that’s what Cap’ looks like when he smiles.
August 18th, 2011 at 12:33 pm
don’t no i have money problems right now have not been able to see it thanks
August 18th, 2011 at 3:41 pm
I, too, miss the pirate boots and flaired gaunlet gloves.!!
Looking forward to seeing Cap, IronMan, and Thor together on the screen!!
Sure, I’m a little bummed about not following the original story where Namor is involved and the AVENGERS find him as they search for the HULK…and then, team up with the Fantastic Four!
But mOVIes Is A DIffERenT CreaTURE!!
No mention of THE ALL-WINNERS SQUAD or THE INVADERS,…OR THE HUMAN TORCH, TORO, OR NAMOR in the ’40′s.!! They’ve torn the “heart” out of it for me.
But so it goes!!
August 20th, 2011 at 10:28 am
The Captain America COSTUME is D O P E Y, and C H E E S E.
Constructively, let me just say the the producers of this movie need to add a scene where Evans should say something like “How do you people in the 21st Century put it? Im going ‘old school’ on this?” -and have Captain America wear the AWSOME UNIFORM =not a gay costume=, that he wore in th CAPTAIN AMERICA MOVIE. Jeeze… Marvel/Disney please wake up before you turn this from a global franchise and into a fad. The look of Cap America was RIGHT ON in the Captain America MOVIE.
Zippers on the thighs -its gayness in action, frivilous cheese that ONCE AGAIN, turns the words “Super Hero” into something someone would rather hide their interest in this genre than let people know they like comic book reading. In the picture above the ‘bulb-ous’ head of Evans is retard and the metal strip on his shoulders…its ‘stuptarded’ (yes, thats right: stup+retarded). ***ABONDONDED COMIC BOOK READERS RETURNED TO THE AVENGERS because of the take that writer Millar and ARTIST BRYAN HITCH took on Captain America and the Avengers in their “ULTIMATES” comic book story.
Check out the interview with artist Hitch in the DVD Special Features for the animated Avengers2 movie. Their take on the “Super-hero” is a practial and useful look of the persons cloths as a uniform, THE BELT, BOOTS, the -start in the circle on the shouulder …-this is a very successful ‘interpretation’ that brought back and creatged NEW READERS OF COMICS. ????? SO WHY IS MARVEL/DISNEY NOT USING IT ANYMORE ????? If it isnt broken, THEN DONT FIX IT!!!
KEEP THE Captain America MOVIE UNIFORM P L E A S E. He can always just go back to this one you are showing above whenever you want sales to drop and people to be embarrassed that they like superheros.

God, that costume is one pile of crap he looks like some stalker comic con fan ,please sign my costume because mom’s waiting in the car. Has every one seen Hulk, he looks great they got it right with him but this is a big no,no.
