There is nothing gender specific in the name Black Canary is there? Just to make it less distasteful we’ll make Black Canary a black guy. Is that okay Jill? And Jill and BMB, the comments you’ve seen elsewhere regarding the new Ultimate Spidey shouldn’t surprise you, because those kinds of comments can be found on many news sites these days to just about ANY and EVERY story.

Whether it’s regarding race, politics, religion, those comments, which are far too frequent and by far too many people, pretty much show that any notion of ‘progress’ is an illusion.

Also, note how a lot of people are saying “If they wanted a black editor of the daily planet they should have created a new character instead of making Perry a black man” It wouldn’t have made a difference-this is exactly what we’re seeing with the new Ultimate Spider-Man and people are still boo-hooing about PC tokenism in that scenario.

If they killed Peter Parker off JUST so they could replace him with a character of another ethnicity then that is wrong.

But I read Death of Spider-Man and it was an excellent story that would have been CHEAPENED if they had not followed through. If they wanted to continue telling Spider-Man stories in the Ultimate universe a new character had to step up an take on the mantle. And in that case WHY NOT someone who is different than Peter Parker both in personality and (if they want) ethnicity?

If they had tried after 100+issues to suddenly make PETER of different ethnicity then that would be stupid (unless they had a REALLY sensible in story reason)

Now in a similiar vein Perry White has been an old White dude in the comics for a while. And again if they changed that in the main DC books I would be annoyed. But in a movie that is BASED on the comic? They are going to take liberties so that they can tell the story they want to tell in the way they want to tell it with people they believe to be competent for the roles they need filled. Since the movie is a movie with an original story and not a direct adaption of the comic there is no reason NOT to put the best actor in the roll they can. Make him , Black, white , hispanic, it doesn’t matter. It’s different. It’s new.

In the Ultimate Universe Nick Fury is Black. In the Regular Marvel U he’s STILL an old white guy. In the movie he’s Sam Jackson. In any universe he’s awesome. And as long as we aren’t making changes for no good reason to whats been established thats just fine.

Perry White seems like such a minor role though. So casting someone like Fishburne tells us that they have more planned for the crotchety old curmudgeon. Part of me thinks he can do for White what Gary Oldman did for Commissioner Gordon. But then Gordon has always been a more interesting character than White.

DC has had some inconsistent casting choices lately. Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan was a bad idea (Although Mark Strong, Geoffrey Rush and the rest were inspired).

Then again, Don Cheadle as War Machine wasn’t such a good idea either.

Perry White is a fictional character. His race was not an accident of birth. It was a deliberate decision of the people who first put him in the comics. I can’t imagine anything more “intricate” than that.

I drew Northstar and Aurora as White because I wanted them to be White. I drew Shaman as Native Canadian because that was what I wanted him to be. I drew Tony Murcheson as Black for the same reason.

This isn’t like a novel, in which the author might chose not to give physical descriptions of his characters. We have SEEN Perry White. We have SEEN Nick Fury. Just as we have SEEN James West.

Called it “colorblind casting”, call it “race swapping”, what it really is, is blackface. And some day we are going to look back on this and find it every bit as embarrasing.

Back before the Lois & Clark TV series debuted there was word that Perry White would be black in that, which should tell you what an obvious and moronic notion it is. It’s a calculated way of suggesting progressiveness and change without actually embracing those things. Cast a black Lois Lane and you might impress me — I’d respect that decision, even if I didn’t agree with it.

Would ANYONE choose David Hasselhoff over Samuel Jackson in the role of the Nick Fury? Both have played the character, but Samuel Jackson owns the role on screen and anyone who is not a fan of the comic book, probably thinks of Nick Fury today as a Black Man. Just like a good majority of television fans think of Green Lantern as John Stewart and not Hal Jordan…

Well this is just another Superman movie down the shooter. (Can’t say what I want to say)

Get a grip, folks. I love Superman. Correction: I loved Superman for thirty years and then the past five, we’ve just been going through the motions for the sake of the collection. Perry White is black? So what? This is the most minor thing to come out of Warner the past three months! GL blew, the new 52 will blow, and quite frankly, no one at DC seems to care about fans anymore.

And really, if Jonah Hex can talk to the dead, a black Perry White is just a non-issue.

(By the way, because race is SUCH an issue on this thread, I’m white (and have been all thirty-eight years of my life) and I’m totally down with Morpheus as Perry. In fact, gimme a film x-over with Perry White and Nick Fury in 1980s Grenada, and I’ll be happy!)

And another thing, Miles Morales should become also a regular character in Universe 616.
This is important,or he will be to much like the rabbit out of the cylinder.
And if he’s got no spider powers, it would be interesting what he does instead of. Maybe the new photographic biograph of Spiderman?

Seriously, if your upset about a minor supporting player getting a race switch you really need to re-evaluate your life.
