Warners Announces New Release Date For Man Of Steel

July 21st, 2011
Author Graeme McMillan

Keep looking up in the sky – but not for awhile. Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. has moved the release date of Man of Steel, the next Superman movie, from an unscheduled December 2012 date to summer 2013: June 14th, 2013, to be exact.

This is potentially good news for the movie, to be directed by Watchmen‘s Zack Snyder from a script by The Dark Knight‘s David Goyer (That latter movie’s director, Christopher Nolan, is acting as executive producer on MoS), as it seemingly makes the movie Warners’ big summer tentpole of the year, suggesting that the execs are feeling confident about what they’ve seen so far. It also means that it’ll be going up against Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University (the sequel to Monsters, Inc.) and the Ryan Reynolds-starring adaptation of Dark Horse’s RIPD, both already announced for summer 2013 releases. It’ll be interesting to see if it’ll be the only DC superhero movie to hit screens that summer, considering both Green Lantern 2 and The Flash are in development as we speak…

But the world is ending in 2012, lol…

  2. JAV Says:

I thought the world was ending this October 21st?

Didn’t that crazy FamilyRadio.com guy say that to all his followers? Sell your crap you wont need it anymore.

At least I’ll get to see this summer’s movies before … you know … THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT.

  3. Andrew Says:

Not to mention Iron Man 3 and Thor 2…

  4. What Guy? Says:

Cool, summer 2012 seems a little competitive already.

I hope WB is using the time to because they want to take some time and care over it.

  5. Mavrik Says:

This will give them time to switch Superman into jeans, short sleeve super-shirt and a short cape. Chris Nolan’s name is the only thing keeping me interested on this.

  6. Wynn Says:

I thought that Warner Bros had to put out a Superman movie by the end of 2012 for legal reasons or they lose the license or something?

  7. Captain Ron Says:

Wynn, I’m not a legal expert, but I think the film had to be IN PRODUCTION by the end of 2012. I could be mistaken.

Seems like WB learned their lesson from “Green Lantern” and is giving the movie plenty of time for production and post-production.

I saw this coming! BC WB did the same thing with Green Lantern. I’m looking forward to this film!

  9. Bri Says:

Probably going to suck since it got moved to 2013!

Mavrik joked about Superman being in jeans and a t-shirt but I wonder if that look, followed by the armored outfit are really going to be part of the movie?

  11. Hugo Sleestak Says:

ian might have a point there, especially with the armored look. It would be a distinct break from both the Chris Reeve suit (which is still the best) and the dark, over-textured costume worn by Brandon Routh. It would come off as “Superman meets Thor.”

  12. Batfan65 Says:

IT will also give Nolan some time after Batman to maybe supervise the production and editing when Dark Knight is done

A movie’s release being pushed back is never a sign of confidence, and with rumors having persisted for some time that WB have been getting very concerned about Snyder’s box office potential, I would not be the least bit surprised if he’s off the project soon.
