2012′s Spider-Man reboot film, the Marc Webb-directed Amazing Spider-Man, is on the cover of Entertainment Weekly‘s annual pre-Comic-Con issue, and the accompanying images show that Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy essentially looks like a John Romita Jr. drawing come to life, Cool World-style.
Plus, definitive confirmation of what has been the going assumption for the last few months: that the film will have mechanical webshooters rather than the organic ones seen in Sam Raimi’s 2002-2007 trilogy.
The nine images posted on EW.com also show Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors, Sally Field and Martin Sheen as Aunt May and Uncle Ben, and detail shots of the back and front of Andrew Garfield in the new Spidey suit. The magazine goes on sale tomorrow, July 15.

I never accepted the argument that a high school kid could not invent mechanical webshooters no matter how smart but could make an elaborate costume like shown in the movies.
I have an old Spectacular Spider-Man annual showing Peter silk-screening his costume, which makes more sense to me.
As for well why didn’t peter just market his inventions, c’mom we all know he’s not business smart

That costume looks worse and worse every time I see it.
His head looks like a giant basketball.

Last time I checked, this is all make believe.
July 14th, 2011 at 1:35 pm
I liked the organic webshooters so I’m disappointed.
I also HATE that Gwen is in this movie and not Mary Jane. Hopefully Gwen dies in this film and we get MJ for the rest of the franchise.
That being said, I probably won’t see this movie. I liked the Raimi movies and have no desire to invest in a “new” Spider-Man.

This just looks like a made for tv hack job. Sony was smart to keep the budget low at 80 million so even if it outright flops, the Spiderman brand has enough of a fan base for them to make their money back. Even if it pulls in Green Lantern numbers, they can claim it a successful reboot.

Cool with most things I see but the costume. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Still excited to see what comes.

Not a big fan of the movie versions changing/messing with the costumes. But it could be good. I’ll wait to give my opinion. Not enough released to make an opinion. My biggest complaint (with any comic book movie) is the need for an origin movie. Why not just give the origin in the opening credits? How many times are we going to be subjected to Spider-Man, Batman and Superman’s origins? And to keep using the same villians in each incarnation is just as lame. If you’re going to change the costume why would you need to follow the books at all at that point? So why not make Superman’s first villian be Metallo instead of Lex? Green Lantern had so much potential, and they screwed it up by trying to put too much into it. They build Paralax up into this major threat only to be beaten within 15 minutes. And why the need for Hal’s origin AND Hector Hammond’s origin? Do we, as an audience, NEED to see said origin (or even know it?)? So I guess, when we finally get a JLA movie we’ll spend 3 movies going thru everyone’s origins? C’mon Hollywood! You can do better. I know you can.

That dude is too cool to be Peter Parker. Parker is a nerd, not some super hunky awesome … oh dear lord I am in love with Andrew Garfield!!
July 14th, 2011 at 3:22 pm
Yeah CDickerson, I agree. Andrew Garfield? Good. Emma Stone? Better. Mecha-webshooter. Yep. Costume. Young Spidey in Love as the angle (I’m expecting something Lois & Clark-y), sure. Sally Field? Could work (Frances Sternhagen was busy? Or dead?). But Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben!? WTF?! AGAIN?! Sure, Spidey’s origin is Ditko-rrific, but why do these hero movies have to be so origin heavy? Sigh. Well, as long as Supes doesn’t kick off with 10 minutes of astronomy-porn…
July 14th, 2011 at 3:40 pm
Peter Parker hasn’t looked like a nerd since John Romita has drawn him. And that trend has kept on. If anything the Rami period was the plain jain looks of Steve Ditko and the Webb period is the good looks of John Romita. So in a way…it’s matching the comics.
You’d believe a guy can stick to walls and has superstrength but it’s hard to make a costume and webshooters? Cos-players YOUNGER than Peter make more complicated costumes all the freaking time! And Peter’s a genius! Also the Marvel Universe has always been a bit more ahead in tech so him building webshooters in the context of that tech is logical.
I’m not a fan of Mary Jane…I especially LOATHE movie Mary Jane. I like the original Stan Lee/John Romita version (which thankfully they reversed her back to) and I”m glad they are starting with Gwen. She was and is Peter’s first true love.

Yes! Mechanical web-shooters instead of the organic garbage from the Ultimate comics version is already full of win! Andrew Garfield is also thin and lanky just the way I’ve always pictured Spidey! And no MJ with Gwen being Spidey’s first girlfriend=excellent!
Personally, I’ve always been disappointed with Raimi’s movies, so hopefully the real classic Spider-Man will be offered in this reboot. No more Ultimate trash infesting Marvel’s movies, please!
July 14th, 2011 at 3:50 pm
Mechanical webshooters! Just like the comic! And Peter is a hunky underwear model with Rob Pattinson hair. Just like the comic!

Whine whine whine, moan moan moan. I think it all looks great. Spider-Man as directed by the guy who made 500 Days of Summer? Sounds good to me.
July 14th, 2011 at 6:10 pm
This guy has a giant head and a giraffe neck. And looks like he’s 30. What happened to a younger high school Spidey?
July 14th, 2011 at 6:28 pm
Garfield looks like Parker, and Emma Stone looks great as Gwen….I love the web shooters..but the costume ? Hoiw can they get so much right and completely screw the costume up ? It looks….cheap.Raimi screwed up a lot,but at least he got the costume right !
July 14th, 2011 at 7:19 pm
@Sphinxton,
Wasn’t GL directed by the guy who made Casino Royale? Didn’t the director of Iron Man make Jumanji 2? Spielberg and Lucas have made some duds, too.
Directors don’t strike gold all the time, y’know.
July 14th, 2011 at 7:20 pm
L Ru, he’ll definitely be over 30 by the time an sequel comes out.
July 14th, 2011 at 10:07 pm
The new costume is fine. My main gripe is with Andrew Garfield being prettied up to resemble a hipster male model. I wouldn’t mind if the studio was going for the fashionable Peter Parker of the John Romita era, but my guess, in light of the mechanical web shooters and what looks to be Flash Thompson, is that the studio plans to keep the science nerd take from the Raimi movies, and peddle it to audiences, ala “She’s All That,” by insisting that the handsome, well-dressed man before us is really the hated nerd of Midtown High, the frog not yet a prince.
July 15th, 2011 at 6:54 am
Not diggin the new costume. They should have left well enough alone, and by the way Emma Stone does not look like a John Romita Jr drawing, but rather a John Romita Sr. drawing! Glad they made the web shooters mechanical as it is supposed to be! Curious to se what The Lizard will look like.
July 15th, 2011 at 7:17 am
John Romita Jr always did a cool Peter Parker, and that is what I have come to prefer.
I think the film will be great.
July 15th, 2011 at 8:37 am
Sally Field playing Aunt May?!?!?! Field’s acting style is too whiny and naggy to play a loving and likeable aunt!! She and Calista Flockhart make B&S incredibly unwatchable!
July 15th, 2011 at 10:40 am
Why Gwen Stacy instead of MJ. The only interesting thing Gwen ever did was get murdered.
July 15th, 2011 at 2:42 pm
JRJR’s earlier stuff was better. I have some of his 90s Spider-man stuff and it looks great. The Spider-man character, very different suprisingly.
So, this movie version doesn’t die and come back to life in a cocoon?
Good.
July 16th, 2011 at 8:46 pm
The web-shooters are too subtle.
July 17th, 2011 at 1:20 am
@Keith
Ultimate Spidey (at least the original one (;_;)) has mechanical webshooters
haterade fail

I tried looking at your website in my cellphone and the design does not seem to be correct. Might want to check it out on WAP as well as it seems most cellular phone layouts are not really working with your website.
