How Does The New Flash Costume Actually Work?

So, iFanboy has exclusive art showing how Barry Allen’s costume comes out of the Flash ring in the new DC Universe (I suspect this may be from the new Flash #1), and… I have no idea what’s happening in those images. His costume not only seems to be entirely modular – which, I guess, makes more sense than the old costume, which seemed to be all one piece with the only opening the mask, which always made me wonder whether Barry had to climb in through there at superspeed, thankful that no-one could see him looking so ridiculous -but also seems to… change shape and attach itself on him? Somehow? Is it like armor? Is it like Wally’s old Speed Force suit, and that’s how it can change shape? Is it made of unstable molecules?

I can’t help but wonder whether, as cool as this art is – and it really is – it’s one of those things that Jack Kirby once described as “Don’t ask! Just buy it!”

Lame. Change for the sake of change, it adds nothing to the story.

  2. Martin Gray Says:

Yeah, I’m not a fan from what I’ve seen – the change should look like liquid, not robotics. And those boots are ludicrous. I suppose we should be glad he’s not covered in straps and pouches.

  3. Simon DelMonte Says:

Ever since Morrison and Millar made Wally’s costume from pure Speed Force, anything’s been possible.

  4. Don Collett Says:

This makes more sense than the old costume. I’d like it to look a bit more liquid too, Martin, but otherwise it works for me.

  5. Kev Says:

Will they explain how it’s skin tight when he’s wearing it over his regular clothing

Also lame? Caring enough to complain. Faux-science comic book goofery is not only inherently ridiculous but it’s ALWAYS inexplicable so don’t worry about it. The good news is that it never has anything to do with characterization or plot so you’re safe.

    Besides… a wizard did it.

One of these days I’ll catch that Wizard!!

  8. K-Box Says:

So once again, they’re stealing from something that was innovated with Wally in order to give it to Barry. DC’s propping up of its Silver Age heroes at the direct expense of their provably more popular replacements is stupid and sad.

I enjoyed it when Wally’s costume came out of the scar from Savitar. This kind of makes me think Barry is summoning his costume with his ring, which seems odd. At least it would explain all the weird lines that seem to be showing up on all the new costumes.

    Also, why no wedding ring?

I thought DC Relaunch would give everyone a new costume… Flash looks the same… Wish they would do what they did with Batman with the Flash: take the lightning out of the oval and put it on his chest, let it create “side” lightnings that could be incorporated in the suit design cleverly.
