Well, Shane Hasty, I think Earth Man in Legion of Super-Heroes is a pretty close equivalent. And it CAN be interesting to read about a guy who is forced to work in a group/society that values diversity and who seems to feel that this tolerance of difference that compromises the integrity of his world.

Keep your liberal BS to yourself, it has no place in comics. Ramming homosexuality, pun intended, making all religious characters into bad guys, making Americans into bad guys cause they don’t trust Muslims, it’s all just proselytizing and social engineering. It is NOT why MOST of us read comics, to be preached at and told we should feel guilty about something. You want diversity? Try making the oppressed character a white male from the South who is constantly ridiculed by left wing nuts for having ethics, morals, and integrity, real faith, and devotion to family.

@partsmutt: Oh, yeah. I remember reading all those “Black Falcon” stories. And I even remember the Legionnaire, “Black Tyroc.” And, of course, there was “Black Power Man.” And then “Black Vixen.” And we mustn’t forget about “Black Storm.”

IMS, there were actually more WHITE characters who used “Black” in their names–Black Hood, Black Canary, Black Widow, Black Adam, Black Knight, Black Cat, Black Condor, Black Terror, etc) before the 1970s when “black power” came to the comics.

Bull all the way around. The fact that they would even go out of the way to tell a story about Sharif, or a middle easterner or any other minority of the moment is crap. Remember when all the black superheroes used to have “black” in their name? It was as if it had to be pointed out to the stupid white folks that this was a black guy and a hero, as if we couldn’t see it on the page in front of us. Thankfully all that garbage is behind us and black heroes are just heroes. The fact that DC want’s to play on muslim / middle east / blahblah etc is just crap.

Gimmie a hero that’s a hero and leave the BS storylines about Evil America to the talking heads at CNN, Fox, NPR, and all the idiots on AM radio.

As several people pointed out, what sounds like a nearly identical story was just told in a 2-part Power Girl (guest starring batman) and was done very well. My guess is that someone decided that going to that well again so soon would be superfluous.

Honestly, there are any number of perfectly benign reasons for the change. The rabid dog conspiracy theory mentality among fans is really tiresome sometimes.

Maybe DC just had to take a hard look at a story that was below editorial standards? This book would have best been given the “All-Star Batman” kiss off than to have gone further down this road. “Grounded” is one of the worst moments in all comic book history. I hope there is room at the table when JMS joins Chuck Austen, Bruce Jones, John Byrne and all the rest of the “legends”. The man is poison.

Let’s remove a story about a minority character to do more hokey white bread tales about Krypto and the rest of the Superfamily (as we haven’t seen a thousand of those.

Why didn’t DC take notes from the 2005 Doctor Who relaunch? It was immensely successful, and they didn’t obliterate anything from the old stories. Everything still counted, and the new stories were simply presented in such a way that mainstream audiences didn’t need to know the backstory. But for fans of the old, there were plenty of references to what came before.

Nothing that either DC or Marvel is doing these days is worth the paper they’re printing it on these days, as far as I’m concerned. I’ll stick with the boxes of comics I have from the 60s and early 70s. At least those stories were entertaining, even when (sometimes especially when) they were just silly..

JMS ended my 36 year streak of buying every Superman title. Once I stopped buying Superman (and Wonder Woman for same reason), the tether I had to the DCU was cut and I stopped buying any comics at all. So JMS drove me out of comics.

I recently got caught up on some issues of Secret Six, Birds of Prey and Batman & Robin, liked them, and though about catching up on some other titles. But the reboot has nixed that. Been there, done that too many times. It’s a good “jumping off” point.

As a Superman fan, there is no way replacing an issue of this endless, pointless Grounded arc with a lost Krypto story written by Kurt Busiek is anything less than a gift!!!

I really miss the Busiek days from back before New Krypton started these books on a nosedive they never pulled out of (Cornell’s Luthor excluded)

Yeah. “Grounded” is a disaster but DC doesn’t see it. JMS left them holding the Superman (and Wonder Woman) bag but DC treats it like he did them a favor.

I’m disappointed DC isn’t giving the Byrne-Superman a “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow” send-off.

I thought JMS on Marvel was a great combination. The breakdown at DC was unfortunate. Earth 1 superman was nice. I thnik thats the directions they’re going to head in with DCNu Supes. Wonder Woman I could kinda care less about.

But I think the whole DCnu thing is rushed..kinda worried that Flashpoint will just become a big excuse to changes things..as opposed to a serious event.
