Dan DiDio: DC ‘Decided to Rest’ JSA

June 13th, 2011
Author Albert Ching

Wondering why there’s no JSA (other than Mr. Terrific’s solo title) in DC’s immediate post-Flashpoint plans? Co-publisher Dan DiDio addressed the situation on Facebook this past Friday:

AS for JSA, we have decided to rest this concept while we devote our attention on the launch of the three new Justice League series. As for other characters and series not part of the initial 52, there are plenty of stories to be told, and we’re just getting started. best, DD

So, there you go. The move isn’t without historical precedent — there was no Justice Society book for years post-Crisis on Infinite Earths, as we pointed out a couple of weeks ago. Keeping the speculation alive, in response to a fan upset about not seeing the usual JSA cast, DiDio wrote: “who said we weren’t going to see the characters?”

    Very dissappointed.

  2. mbsp Says:

I agree with the need to rest JSA. I’m sure they’ll come back in a big way. After all, they’ll need a new bunch of #1s again eventually.

  3. Sevedris Says:

The Justice Society was the foundation of the DCU. To reduce it to a “concept” is an injustice. And the third “Justice League” title is a misnomer. It’s just the Sentinels of Magic/Shadowpact again. It would be more helpful to explain how the old guard still fit in the DCNU, if they do at all.

  4. Chuck Huber Says:

Nice to hear that the JSA concept may be returning, but there’s a big question about HOW it might return if the line in the Action Comics #1 blurb about Superman being Earth’s “first superhero” is taken at face value. That would seem to imply that there was no Flash before Barry Allen, no Green Lantern before Hal (and/or John, Guy and Kyle), etc. Now that might leave the window open for the notion that there were costumed adventurers before Supes, just none with inherent super-powers, which owuld leave the window open for Al Pratt, Wesley Dodds, Ted Grant, and other mystery-men — maybe even Ted Knight and Rex Tyler. And would such characters have started appearing in WWII? Or only one generation before the JLA? Or…???

  5. Jon Hex Brooks Says:

There is no JSA in the new DCU. They say in the promo for Action Comics that Superman is the first superhero. They may use Starman, Power Girl or Wildcat for other things, but they won’t be the WWII versions fans of the JSA want to see.

  6. DiDio? WhaT THE HECK Says:

THIS SUX. The premier group since the 1940s and we will just take them out. but ya know what??? VooDoo needs a book. Hey how about we give robin wings and turn the JLA a few years younger. Lee did the same thing at marvel and look how that turned out. im so glad its the 1990s here at DC. hey wait it isnt but thats just how they are making it. Wonder Girl a thief???

  7. MarkW Says:

I motion for a vote of no confidence in Dan DiDio, Geoff Jones & Jim Lee’s abilities to running DC comics and there for ask for their immediate dismissal. All those in favour say AYE!

  8. Bo Bryson Says:

Not that I don’t care about the JSA!! I love them, But I’m More concerned with the fact that ALL of DC continuity is being swept under the rug!! I grew up with all these characters, and I won’t simply stand by and continue to read an “ULTIMATE ” version of the DC Universe! If thats what they want to do, …fine!! Why not do it as Marvel did?? A completely seperate Universe from the Mainstream comics. I tell you here and now,…if this is a PERMANENT change in all the characters, then I have read my last DC Comics. It’s sad that after 37 years of loyalty to a company, they are more concerned with trying to make all the characters more modern and hip for new readers, rather than continue to tell great stories with the same charachters that we all grew up with and love! If this is what they want to do , they should create their own, new characters to screw with! Hmmm,…Oh, Jim Lee already tried that with some other comic creators,…it was called IMAGE comics. We see how well that sold, next to the tried and true DC Universe!! If this happens,…DC will go down the drain with all the crappy new spins they put on our beloved characters!

  9. Mike Says:

God, it’s rather obvious they need additional title in their back pocket for the titles that fail, hence no JSA, adult Titans, Outsiders, etc.

The golden agers will be discovered on another Earth, and probably in another time. So their continuity isn’t so dependent on putting WWII characters in the 21st century, or at least not out 21st century.

And would it shock you if Captain Marvel was on that earth either?

  10. MrMGU Says:

Multiversity is still happening. Earth 2. Earth-S. Just wait, not in Septmber.

  11. Roland Says:

Yes the only way I see is for these characters to live on Earth 2

  12. Stace Says:

Sevedris, I so agree. JSA is not a “concept” like some hairbrained idea someone threw out. UGH! I don’t have words to express my displeasure.

  13. Rob Says:

This is part of DC’s new strategy to make money by marketing to youth and dumping the old characters along with their old fan base.

  14. Y Says:

Johns didn’t have any ideas or was sick of them enough to retire the concept. Piss poor coming from a guy who was also a Marvel niche early in his career.

Dumb Didio is a dumbass with a capital D.

It was bad enough Harras got chosen as EIC. To me he represents everything wrong with Marvel Comics with the X-Men in the 80′s and then Marvel as a whole in the 90′s. The legacy is just carried over today through his successors. Alonso gets this idea to do more and more X-Men crossovers while the other families of titles hemorrage for new stuff. And we have Harras to thank for this concept.

  15. Molnek Says:

At least they won’t get to mess up some of my favourite characters. I’m sure we’re all looking forward to Mr. Terrific: The bachelor.

  16. Starsky_Hutch76 Says:

I’m not so sure I want to read about a DCU without a JSA in it. This announcement outweighs any interest some of the recent solictations might have inspired.

  17. salamurai Says:

JSA hasn’t been the same since Final Crisis anyway. I won’t miss the current series. Kudos to keeping the characters around, tho. There are many places they can be used.

Half the team (generalizing, I didn’t count) is original heroes from the 1940′s, still operating over 60 years later – they REALLY need to be retired, it stretches credibility too much.

  18. ELIOT JONES Says:

FROM WHAT I’M SEEING THIS REBOOT LOOKS LIKE AN UP TO DATE: EARTH ONE NOTHING MORE.ALL WE CAN DO IS HOPE THAT THEY BRING THE JSA BACK IN AN EARTH TWO TYPE OF WAY. IVE NEVER LIKE THE IDEAL OF THE JSA BEING ON THE SAME EARTH AS THE JLA. WHAT I USE TO LOVE ABOUT THE OLD JSA/JLA STORYS YOU GET TO MEET NEW MEMBERS WITH FAMILY TIES AND NEW TAKES ON OLD SUPERHEROES

  19. DiDio? WhaT THE HECK Says:

Stretching Credibility? thats your arguement? As opposed to a dead guy being god’s judgement, an alien from a planet that blew up who can shoot frickin laser beams from his frickin eyes? Little rings that can make anything you can imagine?

And someone being possibilty 80 and a superhero stretches credibility?

  20. Supermutant Says:

This is one of many reasons why new DCNU will suck. No reason given other then we are resting the concept. Meaning rather waste 6 months of paper on books like I, Vampire, Frankstein, Batwing, and other books they will be canceled. I want to start a campaign of save DC from DCNU.

  21. Tom Reed Says:

Well, if anything this means that DC won’t mess up the JSA “concept”.

  22. Scott Mateo Says:

  23. nathan daniels Says:

While I bought it because I love the characters, I haven’t enjoyed JSA since Johns left. Willingham’s run didn’t quite work; the JLA/JSA crossover by Robinson was awkward; and the current run just doesn’t feel right, and I can’t stand what has been done to Alan Scott. JSA All-Stars was also clunky (although I liked the return of Brainwave in one arc). I think the team should take a rest….as long as they come back at some point in correct fashion. Alan Scott back in the red/purple; can we make Dr. Fate THE REAL Kent Nelson again instead of a great-nephew?

  24. MrTerrific1977 Says:

The JLA and JSA were never meant to exist on the same Earth. Doing so causes many continuity problems (how can Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman exist in a team from the 40′s and a team from today). Many shoehorns have been put in place over the years to reconcile these issues (many very well executed), but at the end of the day, the two teams were never made to coexist. As much as I love JSA, I think this is a good move that will remove a lot of confusion. They will be back on the parallel earth. Check out Justice League #0. They pretty much gave it away there.

  25. Dan Says:

I love the JSA. That said, I don’t mind that they’re not appearing in the DCnU…for now. As another poster noted, Grant Morrison’s Multiversity is still in the works, and I expect we’ll see the JSA there either in the most recent incarnation, the Earth 2 incarnation, or both.

And anyway, there are so many of the new DCnU titles I want to pick up that I don’t mind NOT having to get another title!

  26. Bb Says:

I think everyone should wait and fisrt see what the first issues of their favorite books are like before insulting or thinking about throwing someone off a roof. It’s been mentioned that some of these titles might fail and holding back a few books is smart. For example I myself wanted to see the Blackhawks back but of course this is a different BH so quite a gamble. Same for the Thunder Agents which in my opinion was not as good a book as many say. Now I also love the JSA. They are or where at one time the most powerful team bar NONE. They can be again. I was so tired of all the added characters, the very old Flash, Wildcat etc. Even under Johns the book was fading. I miss Atom, Starman, Spectre, the Kent Dr. Fate, the sane Hawkman. I miss the team with a Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman. Whether or not these heroes are bought back they don’t belong on the same earth as the JLA. The recent earth II was left with a mystery only The Spectre and Dr. Fate understood, and it was left to float. There is a huge story there. If DC doesn’t bring them back fairly soon and in all their glory ( which means younger hopefully ) then I will be joining the rest of you. Multiversity means there are many other new books coming. Also there will be a Perez series other than Superman. A major Superman story. Also a Adam Hughes book. Watch for the news out of San Diego. Hopefully DC will let you know big news.

  27. samuel Anderson Says:

Yeah considering huge the JSA has gotten being placed on another earth like in Johns JSA story arc where powergirl goes to earth 2 makes complete sense they want to have a multiverse then give it life same with Thunder agents and xombi DC has all these characters that don’t exactly mix with the DCU regular and need there own world

  28. Michael H Says:

I am glad to hear this. As much as I love the JSA the team had been taken pretty far off the path. I am hoping after the DCNu gets it’s legs all the variant Earth concepts get revisited in an annual JLA special. That would be awesome to revisit.

  29. Matt L Says:

I’m all for the continuity reboot. This is actually getting me excited about heading to the comic store. The only superheros I’ve been reading are Jim Shooter’s revamps of the Gold Key characters over at Dark Horse… but my favorite heros are at DC.

The idea of being able to read Superman again makes me extremely happy. I applaud DC for having the stones to step up and cut out what they needed so that they could simply get back to the core concepts, and tell good stories with their characters again.

Considering the decade-long slump DC has been in, and the mess that Marvel has turned into, this is like a breath of fresh air.

  30. Troy H Says:

Nothing says “we don’t care about our older, loyal fans” like a DC universe without a JSA. There IS no DC universe without a JSA. Sure, this new “concept” is getting some news coverage, but it won’t bring new readers into direct sales stores. And there’s no more racks in grocery stores and drugstores for the kids to come searching for their “new” concept DC titles. Shame on you, Dan Didio.

  31. Matt L Says:

A new Swamp Thing and a complete re-imagining of Captain Atom is reason enough to be okay with the (most likely temporary) loss of the JSA.

Now they just need to bring back Warlord and I’ll be in heaven.

  32. tayo Says:

This is bull. The JSA are the “first” costumed heroes of the golden age and dc wants to “rest” the concept!!! This is ridiculas!! If I don’t hear news on what will become of scott, jay, grant and the others greats, I will be greatly insulted!!

  33. Nijrose Says:

I suspect the JSA is another set of characters (like Nightwing) that DiDio has taken a dislike to, given the increasingly bad creative team choices foisted on a title that was previously popular. That said, I’m shocked he and his crew have allowed Nightwing to resurface.

The whole DCnU concept as it’s been unveiled feels more like an DCfU to longtime fans. After the clusterf*** that was Final Crisis, we get yet ANOTHER do-over? Given the poor quality of Flashpoint so far I doubt this will end well. DC, I know you won’t care, but as a 40-year reader, I’m gone.

  34. Anubis8 Says:

This is the final nail in the coffin for me with DiDio & DC. Bad enough the way that DiDio & his lapdogs have ruined Wally West, but now to completely toss the JSA to the gutter is inexcusable.

DiDio & his ego have destroyed the legacy of the DC over the past few years and he has turned away scores of the DC fans.

F’ Dan DiDio. FIRE THIS CLOWN!!!!

  35. Kory Says:

@ MarkW – AYE! A thorn to Tansformers Beast Wars fans and a curse to DC Comics, he is!

  36. randypan the goatboy Says:

SORRY for the swear…just trying to be funny

  37. QX Says:

@tayo: No, the JSA members are NOT the “first” costumed heroes of the Golden Age. Superman is the first — the first superhero, period. I’m a very big JSA fan, but I go back to the pre-Crisis days, with the JLA on Earth-One, the JSA on Earth-Two, and a big JLA/JSA team-up story every summer (like clockwork). If DC is actually going back to that framework, then I’m OK with it.

But let’s be clear: the Justice Society is not the foundation of the DCU — Superman, Batman (& Robin) and Wonder Woman are … always have been.

  38. Belt Says:

I think that Dan “Didiot” lied us. He wanted to say Rest In Peace.

  39. Belt Says:

I really hope that his series of OMAC fails and proves that he is an awfull writer. Sadly it’s not gonna happen when he has a good writer like Keith to do all the job for him, so Didiot get all the glory

  40. ktaylor Says:

i agree with the majority of these e-mails// dc got into trouble once before by ignoring their rich 70 plus years of rich history // that is what has made them unique for me – i am a forty year plus fan that has read their comics for years // this younger generation doesn’t appreciate it and are so caught up in video games they don’t even know what a book – comic book -bible..etc.. is these days// keep the jsa alive – make these anthology books comback again with these type of characters as back up features for now…..

  41. Jaymes Says:

I think this is a big mistake for DC but I

  42. Jaymes Says:

hope I’m wrong. looking forward to seeing Stormwatch,Frankenstein, Red Hood and the Outlaws,Nightwing,Aquaman, and Grifter.

  43. Dave Says:

I am another long standing reader of DC comics who will not be subscribing to any of the new books. It seems that, according to DC’s marketing strategy, I no longer fit into their younger, modern demography that they seem to be targeting. I enjoyed the richness of the DC Universe and its, albeit quirky and skewed history – JSA, All Star Squadron, Classic JLA, New Teen Titans and Infinity Inc. I loved them all.
On the plus side, I guess I’ll be able to save some money at the end of each month.

  44. G. Host Says:

With decision to remove JSA from history and ‘rest’ them I have decided to ‘rest’ subscribing to DC comics anymore. All of the 20 odd books on my list are being dropped (some dropped by DC for me) other than Doc Savage if it is still exists.

Jim Shooter made a similar editorial decision in 80′s which resulted in me canceling all Marvel books. I have bought one, an Invaders trade paperback at Borders when it was half price. Marvel did not need my money then and DC does not need it now.

DC has been promoting this as a great jump on point. IT IS ALSO A GREAT JUMP OFF POINT!
