Well, you have to give this for DC: They’re not afraid to go big.
The news that DC will not only be relaunching their entire DCU line from #1, but also rebooting continuity – plus, judging from the image on USA Today’s website, redesigning costumes as iconic as Superman’s and, for the second time in as many years, Wonder Woman’s – and offering the entire line same date digitally as physically is… Well, definitely bigger than I’d been expecting. It’s also the second time recently (following the “Holding The Line At $2.99″ promotion) that DC has shown itself willing to make big gestures that Marvel just… isn’t.
What will be interesting is seeing what comes of this boldness. The linewide price drop to $2.99 didn’t produce any sudden unswing in sales, but as Bleeding Cool pointed out last week, sales have been on the rise, slowly, for many mid-level books since the drop. Will relaunching the entire line and rebooting the universe allow long-term fans a jumping-off point? Will offering every book same-date digitally reduce print sales? And, most amusingly, how can anything Marvel have to offer in terms of “dramatic fallout” from Fear Itself match up to this?
“No Fear” suddenly seems like an appropriate slogan for DC these days. Let’s see whether they get rewarded for it.

The same-day digital is a big step that is worthy of support and applause.
The latest total reboot…I will wait and see. I really don’t think it will be as drastic as it sounds, given all the groundwork DC has laid in the past year with Brightest Day. And also given how many “reboots” led nowhere. And also that the same talents will be doing the comics, no doubt.
But at the same time, restarting everything? Tinkering with everything? This could go really, really, really wrong.
At least they are starting with a good creative team on the first effort. But the redesigned uniforms aren’t necessary.

Kinda glad I don’t read DC, as I don’t think I could handle a universe that MUST reboot after a major event every 5-10 years that only seems to muck things up more and more.
But, as Simon said, same-day digital? I’m on board with that.

Actually I don’t think the online part works without a linewide reboot. People are not going to wade through 20 plus years of continuity just because it’s online they need a clean jumping on point, for the online distribution to have it;s best effect.

This all seems unneccesary really, renumbering isnt needed, new costumes aren’t needed. These characters and their looks are iconic for a reason. I mean the redesigned S on Superman just isn’t as iconic as the one that’s already on a million tshirts, bags, badges, etc…i really can’t see it lasting. Maybe it’s just jim lee’s drawing but the S is far too flat.

I approve so long as they can keep their writers to it (so they don’t sneak back in the stuff that you need to be reading 20 years to understand).
I’ll miss Dick Grayson as Batman and Damian Wayne as Robin though.

Oh dear me, those tweaked costumes are just unpleasant. Is the S so hard to draw?

I am all for a line-wide continuity reboot. Dump all the confusion and start fresh. I think it’s long overdue.

Honestly, the whole thing just confuses me. I can see how they would be frustrated with the performances of Superman, Wonder Woman, and maybe JLA, but half of their other characters have FINALLY gotten to a stage where people care again, or more than they ever have (GL, Aquaman, Swamp Thing, Flash, etc.). Batman is irrelevant, he’s always successful, although it does seem weird to cut Grant Morrison’s story short.
I’m going to have to go with the opinions I’ve seen that say that despite the redesigns and reboots and de-aging, the actually stories are not going to be as different as it would seem. It just seems dumb to throw out the last few years of stuff.
My big concern though, is what happens to the second and third generation dc heroes? are we going to see all the second generation characters like dick grayson regressed to their original ages and identities? And is the third generation going to disappear entirely until they choose to reintroduce them? I would hate to lose tim drake and conner kent over this stunt, and I really don’t see how it works unless we do lose them.

My opinion might be in the minority here, but I agree 100% with what DC is doing, and am planning on supporting the 1st issues as much as my wallet (and wife, who am I kidding?) will allow.

The reboot feels and looks far too much like Heroes Reborn for my taste. It seems to squash the role that, for instance, Morrison’s Batman, has been riding and totally cut the legs out from it’s third act. Either it’s a short term “zero issue” stunt that will revert in a few months, or it’s a piss poor idea.
It’s clear they want to mine for gold with some new hypothetical digital audience, at the expense of retailers and long term fans. I don’t see the gamble paying off, and they will ultimately burn both bridges.

Same day digital not a bad idea. Pretty much reboot of the entire dcu with new #1s including probably undoing Superman/Lois marriage is really, really, really (put about million more reallys) bad idea. Up there with OMD, Gerdo (?) shooting first, Archie vs Punisher, Batman RIP, Final Crisis, Wolverine and Spider-Man as Avengers. Why dc why? Why have you betrayed your fans again? Why?

I agree with Simon that the changes probably won’t quite so drastic across the board as they initially seem. The materials DC have released say continuity will be maintained or slightly tweaked in some cases. So I’m guessing things will be the same for a lot of the characters they’ve just spent time rehabbing (Aquaman, Manhunter, Firestorm, Deadman), as well as Johns’ Green Lantern and Morrison’s Batman (in fact, in that JL image it looks like Dick’s costume).
I’m conflicted, but actually mostly in favor. I’m with those who hope this doesn’t mean the legacy heroes get shuffled away into storage again, but I also think event-wise DC had become way too insular and self-referencing with its continuity. Example: The last couple of issues of Brightest Day were supposed to be some big cool moment, but were really only a payoff for people who read Swamp Thing in the ’80s.
The rest of Brightest Day was much more on point, reintroducing important characters and giving them a clear direction. Hopefully that’s how this reboot is done.

This kind of a thing might get me to read superman, since he’s a character I always enjoy in principle, but in function always reminds me of a stuffy uncle.
on a different note though, doesn’t this whole thing sort of reek of desperation? I mean, if they were doing well would they really want to reboot their entire universe again? I mean, Marvel’s got nearly that much continuity (at least the stuff that matters, the early dc stuff isn’t really touched on much) and they almost never do reboots.

I don’t like that they keep focusing on this being a jumping off point, and the whole it’s them in the modern 21st century! I understand they want to simplify things but so many characters are here because of situations that can’t be simple to a new reader.
Of course my reasons in not liking this are selfish. I’ve read every single comicbook Wally West and Tim Drake have been in. Neither of them are easy to explain. Tim can be Robin again if Dick is Nightwing, but as Red Robin? Well then we need to get into Damian, and RIP, and what about Damian? He’s the character I love to hate and doubt will be around if everyone’s younger. Even Tim is pushing it there just how long do Robins last if we’ve got a 20 something Batman and he’s already gone through 2 sidekicks?
Wally can’t make sense as another Flash if everyone gets deaged. He can still be his age seeing as he’s just Iris’ nephew, but he can’t have been a sidekick then. I’m guessing Bart will be taken away. Barry having a grandson is fine because of time travel and death. But Iris must be mainlining the speedforce aswell seeing as she’s already seen her adult kids die and has one normal aged teenage grandkid.
I know all of this is absurd, which is why I enjoy it and I doubt it can all be simply tweaked. I doubt that new S will stay on Superman’s chest, I like the lack of underwear on top though. And I’m sorry, but Cyborg should not be in that picture. Give us the big Seven to look at. No one cares about Cyborg getting a revamp lookswise he can only go up in that department.

This isn’t that big of a deal. They just did it 5 years ago at the end of Infinite Crisis, minus the renumbering. This is nothing but Superboy Wall Punch 2.0. Marvel isn’t willing to make gestures like this? Sure they are…it was called One More Day.
And people thought renumbering the Ultimate line was desperate.

while it is similar, if DC does what it says it is going to do, then this is pretty fundamentally different. One Year Later changed very little retroactively, it didn’t remove whole decades of history from continuity.
In many ways DC is defined by the legacies of its characters, and now it sounds like they might simply be removing those legacies from existence and stepping back to when the tier 1 characters came into existence, removing a huge amount of dc characters possibly from existence for quite a long time, if not ever.

This is totally my opinion as a guy that reads DC Comics:
-Superman(my favorite DC character)has been boring for a few years.
-While I’ve loved Dick Grayson as Batman, there’s one too many.
-Gail Simone was removed from Wonder Woman for this?
-The art on most books is sort of bland. Where are the big name artists?
-Flashpoint may be something good, interesting, and exciting and could possibly give these characters the boost that they deserve. I’m apprehensively excited about it. Or excitedly apprehensive.

At first glance this does sound very “Ultimate” or “Heroes Reborn”, but a relaunch could be great, starting fresh is always good I just hope they’re careful and do their best to avoid alienating longtime readers. All of us have our favorite story lines and I hope those are preserved somehow.
They really need to come up with a list of major events for each character that always remain regardless of any reboots and let us know what they are. I’m sure this exists somewhere.
And all of the character stuff from the last year, Blackest Night, Brightest Day, JL: Generation Lost, elements from the New Krypton arc and the events that preceded it… please tell me that wasn’t for nothing.
