DC Announces Date For Expensive “Bombshell Announcements”

May 23rd, 2011
Author Graeme McMillan

Well, at least we now know when DC is planning to release info about the big changes expected to their DC Universe line following the conclusion of Flashpoint. The LA Times has announced that both Geoff Johns and Jim Lee will be appearing at its “Hero Complex Film Festival” on June 11th to drop “bombshell announcements about the future of Superman and the entire DC Universe.” Tickets for the event, which also includes a double feature of Superman The Movie and Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, along with a Q&A with Donner, cost $45, meaning that – let’s face it – most of us will be following along on the internet.

  1. Cyn Op Says:

A big reboot of the entire universe, a la Crisis on Infinite Earths (as, let’s face it, the ret conning post Infinite Crisis was minimal)

  2. Cyn Op Says:

    That’s my guess anyway

  3. saulres Says:

The Source says “What does DC have in store for Superman and can this young, hot creative duo launch Clark Kent and his alter ego into the future?” and “Johns and Lee will be making comic book publishing news at the festival panel.”

I’m worried it’s going to be “We will no longer be publishing monthly books but only OGNs.”

  4. Hal Jordan Says:

I figure it will be the return of the infinite Multiverse and a new starting point for DC continuity. Sort of how New Earth was introduced after Infinite Crisis.

  5. zombie kid Says:

@saulres i srsly doubt they’d do that since they’d lose profit

  6. Cray Says:

People accused Wildstorm of rebooting too much, Now Jim Lee has the reigns of DCU and it appears they are rebooting DCU yet again. Regardless of my quip above, I don’t there’s ANYTHING DC can do to surprise regular readers. They have read it all in such a short span of time.

If DC really wants to surprise people, they should slim their line down so that a person can afford to read all their books. Get rid of the multiple Superman, Batman, and Green Lantern books. Streamline it so readers can pick up every DC book and not get variations of the same character.

That would be a true bombshell.

  7. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

I thought maybe you meant “expansive”, but yours works too.

It’s rather odd that they’d choose to make comic-publishing related announcements at a film event. It makes much more sense for the announcements to be film-oriented, like news of more DC film projects.

But as many have said, if films can outshine comics at San Diego, surely the inverse can happen as well.

Let me throw a crazy idea onto the table as a conversation-starter. With the copyright case between the Siegel estate still being in a quagmire, what are the odds that they’ll revamp Superman with less of a connection to the items from Action #1 that they no longer have clear title to? A wild idea, I know, but not IMpossible.

I know a certain comics rumor site has been mentioning massive superman-related news for a month and change now, hesitant to breathe a word of it until he has some additional sources. And considering everyone at DC has signed NDAs longer than the Massey Pre-Nup, odds are he won’t be getting any.

  8. Kooster Says:

Since a judge has ruled that nearly all of the Superman rights go back to the Siegel estate in 2012, I would not be surprised if DC Comics announced that Superman is gone. DC Comics has spent a lot of efforts with “Grounded” and keeping him out of Action Comics, where I could care less if he was around anymore.

DC Comics has Captain Marvel, who I think has so much more potential than Superman. In fact, Captain Marvel was just about to top Superman way back then, when the Big Red Cheese was under Fawcett, until DC Comics squashed them with a lawsuit.

If Superman disppears from the DCU, I just hope that Supergirl, Conner, and Krypto survive to fight another day.

  9. David K Says:

I’ll bet it’s some concrete movie plan, like Marvel’s been doing.

I wouldn’t be surprised if DC drops the weekly comic book and just print books. Comic books started off as quarterly, bi-monthly, etc. Might be time for it to swing back to that kind of schedule. I stopped buying weeklies over a year ago and now I prefer reading the book format. Or, maybe go all online for weeklies, instead of print.

  10. Nicholas post Says:

Muliverse is highly probably than other those so-called theories.

All new bad-ass Red Lantern series.

All-Star Batman. All Star Wonder Woman.
Other All-Star titles such as Green Lantern, Flash, etc.

Wildstorm is back (odd is 50%.

  11. David Says:

Superman will become a Canadian citizen.

  12. Phylemon Says:

I think we are overlooking the obvious that the announcement could just be that Johns and Lee will be the new creative team on either Superman or Action. The press release specifically says, “What does DC have in store for Superman and can this young, hot creative duo launch Clark Kent and his alter ego into the future?”

  13. durkardurka Says:

How can anything that big be done when we still have Batman, Inc. and that entire thing going on?

  14. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

Kooster – eventually it was poor sales finally grounded Captain Marvel, not the lawsuits. They kept WINNING the court cases, DC kept filing appeals. It got to the point that the sales weren’t big enough the spend the money. They settled out of court.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Comics_Publications_v._Fawcett_Publications

  15. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

And as a followup, remember that the plan here is to make a splash in the MAINSTREAM media – bringing back the Multiverse would be met with a resounding “huh?” by the papers.

Rebooting Superman (as part of a line-wide reboot or no) would get some ink, however.

  16. mk Says:

Good. I hope they reboot Superman. The comic is LAME!!!!

  17. Midhat Says:

Maybe they finally listen to my 10 page complaint letters and finally decided to make a brave and bold movie instead of a pointless jla movie.

  18. The Zug Says:

Half-assed rebooting will be a disaster. COIE was the closest they ever came to a full reboot, but their unwillingness to do a complete one resulted in continuity “fixes” that continue to this day.

If you’re going to reboot, DC, then make it complete. Everything starts over. Do it right, you could win a lot of new fans. Do it badly, or half-assed, you’re just speeding up your demise.

  19. Jrotten Says:

“How can anything that big be done when we still have Batman, Inc. and that entire thing going on?”

Agreed. There isn’t going to be a line-wide reboot as long as Grant Morrison is still running the Bat Office. Period. Whatever is happening is probably localized to Superman (and Flash).

  20. Justin Says:

Superman meets DMZ meets Last Man meets JLA International meets something else cool.

  21. Simon DelMonte Says:

If they’re finally hiring me to write Superman, I do hope they tell me first.

  22. R.J.Bowman Says:

Rumor has it that everything is going back to issue #1 and a reboot of all the characters, which would be kind of a cheap stunt.

It would cause continuity problems that the people clamoring for reboots never thought of: how could Superman, Supergirl, Batman, the Teen Titans, JLA, JSA, and Birds of Prey all debut simultaneously?

  23. Coming Curse Says:

I can imagine some hardcore fans dropping the $45 to witness this announcement live, but expecting people to sit through BOTH of the execrable Donner Superman films?

  24. Elongated J Says:

I keep getting anxious when I read people commenting on the idea that the whole DCU could be rebooted. Of course there’s always the possibility that it would be done perfectly and I’d love it, but there seem like a million different ways that they could do it and make me hate it as a long-time DC reader (and fan of some of the quirky aspects of DCU history).

Then I remember something: it would be almost impossible for them to reboot everything given some of the other announcements they’ve made. They’ve announced an upcoming Red Lantern ongoing book. They’ve announced a new Justice League International book. They’ve recently launched Xombi and THUNDER Agents, both to some popular acclaim. Granted, none of these things (especially the latter two, both of which are somewhat removed from the DCU at large so far) say that there can’t be sweeping changes to continuity or how the DCU works… BUT… it seems like it would be pretty difficult to start at “DAY 1″ in the DCU and already have Red Lanterns and the JLI running around, wouldn’t it?

Yes, a lot of storylines are ending at a very convenient time for something big to happen, but you’re not seeing the “What Ever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow” type stories that would be at a premium if this was about to be the last time we see this version of the characters and their continuities. You see them setting up things still. The new JLI. The current Legion. The returned heroes from Brightest Day (including at least a new Aquaman book). The returned Swamp Thing and John Constantine.

I have NO idea what the changes will be coming out of Flashpoint (especially considering the fact that it reads like the same ol’ same ol’ story that we’ve seen before where a villain changes history and a hero or group of heroes has to gather the alternate versions together to set things right… usually only with long-term consequences to the main character)… and the fact that they’re making it sound like they’ll be sweeping changes still makes me a bit anxious, but I’m pretty sure that it’s not a total reboot. They’ve got too much riding on the current continuity.

  25. NeoSamurai Says:

I’m hoping it’s going to be a blitzkrieg of mass media marketing of all DCU licenses to make Disney and Marvel get an ulcer with trying to catch up…yeah, I know it’ll never happen–Marvel just has a better hype machine than DC, but I can dream :)

  26. Michael H Says:

I have a feeling that DC may be getting ready to do an “Irredeemable” makeover to Supes or go with whatever “Flashpoint” births.
Whatever it is, good or bad, it too will pass.

  27. saulres Says:

@Kooster: Now I’m even more afraid, because I believe you’re probably right. The DC Universe without Superman :(

  28. Jospeh Says:

The DCU needs a total reboot. Continuity has become a bigger mess since Crisis on Infinite Earths than it ever was before that event. DC should have had a total reboot then, but something unusual happened: their comics started selling. They didn’t want to lose comics like New Teen Titans and Batman and the Outsiders, which were selling and would have been difficult to maintain with a total reboot.
That being said, I don’t expect a total reboot. There will be some kind of shake up I’m sure, but they won’t go as far as to reboot the entire universe.

  29. What Guy? Says:

I doubt its a Crisis style reboot, not since Batman and others still have all their ongoing story lines.

I am expecting new titles and cancelations and for the new characters introduced in flashpoint to carry over into the regular DCU

  30. mbembet Says:

what happened to Batman Europa and All Star Batman and Robin? jim lee sucks i don’t know why people considered him as great artist and geoff johns is the second most overrated writer next to mark millar

  31. Tim Kretzer Says:

No clue as to what’s up continuity wise for the DCU, but if I could make a few things happen here’s a short list:

    1. All monthlies available digitally at the same time their hard copy versions hit the shelves. .99 per download.

    2. All printed versions would be published on the much less expensive paper, including the covers. $1.99 per issue.

    3. Make the weekly newspaper styled stories, like DC did a while back for a twelve issue run, a regular Sunday feature in every newspaper around the world. Tailor the characters and stories for the regions.

    4. Stop publishing multiple titles for any characters as separate series; one ongoing per character per month, with limited series of 4-6 issues for any other story lines.

    5. Get out the dust covered rolodexes and start calling up the great creators of the past that have given us fans so many great stories over the years and put them on titles again. I’m not talking about the great ones who are in retirement due to age and/or health issues, although getting them involved in development of ideas could only be a good thing. There are many creators of years gone by who are still young/middle aged and who could do as good, or better, than many of the stories being done today.

    6. No more reboots or continuity fixes. Just start writing good stories with great characterization and work on the fixes that need to be done in the process. No more making the fixes the marketing hooks. Make the characters and stories the main points for buying the comic books again. Sell a few hundred thousand copies for a few issues until the novelty of the fix/reboot wears off…. or…. sell a few hundred thousand, and growing, issues each issue ongoing because stories are being written for readers instead of impulse buyers.

Oh well…. I’m not a comic book biz pro… or any kind of pro for that matter… Just offering up my two cents in hopes that something will happen that will give me a reason, and means, to start buying more comic books again instead of less as I’m doing now.

  32. Warpath17 Says:

Im hoping its going to be a Superman Earth one reboot for the Superman titles.

  33. daniel Says:

Maybe it would bring in some some new readers, but a line-wide reboot would be a definite jumping-off point for me. I like the DC universe as its history, and don’t want to restart from scratch.
Why invest in long-term stories if they’re just going to be erased every so often?

  34. Unit_99 Says:

I’m shocked at the lack of creativity (from both comic & Hollywood writers) & comic book fans over Superman. Everyone of you should be ashamed of your selves! Without Superman non of the other superheros probably would have been created! I’m sick and tired of everyone hating on Superman.

  35. Unit_99 Says:

I hope DC aborts the entire Grant Morison Batman run from the past several years. RIP SUCKED!

  36. gordon Says:

It does seem like this would be an extraordinarily random event to announce massive universe-wide reboot. Particularly since the event is also geared toward the mainstream and film industry, and trying to explain Flashpoint to an audience full of entertainment reporters who don’t generally read comics would be more trouble than it’s worth. Given that Superman is coming out of Grounded with no real direction, announcing a major high-profile new creative teams with new issue #1s would seem like a logical conclusion. And with books like Red Lanterns and JLI announced and in development for a while now, and Morrison in the middle of a several-year story in the Batman books, restarting the universe from scratch or carrying over the Flashpoint universe just doesn’t make sense.

Then again, the event would conveniently fall just before DC would be dropping their September solicitations, so maybe it is a massive reset.

  37. morph1138 Says:

I think they’re getting rid of Superman. Did anyone else notice they said “What does DC have in store for Superman and can this young, hot creative duo launch Clark Kent and his alter ego into the future?” Maybe Clark Kent will be a new Superhero with a diff name because Lois Lane gets killed off thereby giving DC 100% ownership and not having to share those elements with the Sigels and Schusters. Just my own personal theory.

  38. Evil greg Says:

No more reboots, no more ret cons, go easy on the big events…you want to sell books? Tell good stories. Green Lantern hooked me because the story was cool, Flashpoint surprisingly has my attention as well after #1…because I like the characters and story direction..not because it’s a BIG world shaker.
You want a multi-media presence? Make movies that are true to the characters and respect the meta-story. Maybe take a hint from your direct release animated films. You want a good TV show? You have a huge success with Smallville, find an alternative to fit the slot thats now empty. Toys and video games, pretty solid..other merchandising..pretty solid.

  39. fmoon Says:

I hope they do reboot Superman. Apart from Elseworlds Superman is so stale. Anyone who say Smallville is a success is a little off key. It was a success when it was young Clark…soemthing fresh…not Clark and Lois and Metropolis. The ratings fell and people who stuck around to see him in the suit and fly which he lamely refused to do cause some crap about Lois and wanting to be normal. Superman Returns was crap too. Heroes need to be heroes for the new generation too and Superman is in a kind of limbo and I want to like him and what DC has done in his titles has not helped him much.

  40. Tim Levine Says:

Given the litigation, I’m going to agree with the idea that Clark Kent adopts a different super-hero identity.

  41. kirk philbrick Says:

Superman will forever forward be called the Blur. lol.

  42. Murphy Says:

Oh My God! I am SO excited! DC announced that they are going to be announcing something!

To be honest, the only announcement that I will care about is: No more events! I collect very few DC (or Marvel) titles any more and tend to drop titles as they become involved in them. Of course, I realize I am in the minority so that will probably not happen.

  43. carpethead Says:

I think since it is at a film thing they are going to anounce that they are indeed making a JLA film.

  44. Kal-El Fan Says:

IDK about the Clark Kent getting a new superhero ID thing. The Siegels/Shusters own “Clark Kent” as well. I don’t see how that solves anything.
Given the venue, I’d guess this is probably about new creative teams and something to do with the film/TV franchises across the board. We might get some news/pics concerning the new Superman film as well.

I find it interesting that they are tying this in with a Donner appearance/screening. I wonder what connection (other than they are Superman films) there is, if any.

  45. SAMURAI636 Says:

All of you guys are idiots, if you think that Superman is going anywhere.

All of you are also idiots, if you think that anything you suggested (no more events, cutting down titles, etc) is going to happen. Possibly a reboot, but that’s kinda improbable.

I think the big announcement will be that some of the FP titles will carry over into the main DCU.

  46. The Mighty Drew Says:

Yeah, I’ve been suspecting that they are going to have to alter the Superman identity with all of the litigation going on. I can’t imagine how they can possibly alter the character enough to keep him viable, interesting, and able to support the Superman iconography. I really hope I’m wrong. DC Comics IS Superman.

  47. nate Says:

Maybe they’ll upgrade the art finally. Marvel’s artists are generally stronger, while the typical Superman book is drawn by committee by studios in Brazil and Europe…and it’s so weak! I’m more interested in the art from their Retrovison books…artists who have experience and that I might see at a convention! Even DC’s colouring is worse than Marvel. I know most fans online only care about the writing, but the art is what hooks you first, and DC’s rushed, generic art isn’t hooking anyone!

  48. Supermutant Says:

My dream $1.99 books (I can always dream). My nightmare=another lame reboot of dcu with all new #1s.

  49. Joe Says:

They did say ANNOUNCEMENTS so there’s more than one.

Personally, I hope one of them is a new JLA featuring Superman, Batman Bruce Wayne, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Barry Allen Flash, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter. Essentially the original line-up back together again, and all in their original incarnations. (The Morrison run had Wally and Kyle)

I hope they make movies of Flash, Green Arrow, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Aquaman, and…Hawkman (c’mon, am I the only one thinks a winged barbarian with a mace flying in the air against jet fighters trying to shoot him down would make a great acton sequence in a movie?) and a Booster Gold TV series spin-off from Smallville. And of course, the Justice League.

@Nate, well Marvel has a lot of artists from The Philippines, all based thousands of miles away. So it’s just a matter of finding the right artists regardless of location.

By the way, I still remember back when DC had the better movies and the better hype machine. My how things have changed. They’ve managed to continue making superior animated shows and features though.

  50. demoncat Says:

proably a new crisis reboot trying to undo final crisis and fix the holes of the original once and for all. or maybe a few big guns will wind up being retired for good.

  51. Steel Sterling Says:

In response to “DC Comics is Superman” – a couple of thoughts. 1 – It’s “DC” – Detective Comics. If it was all about Superman, the company would be called “AC” – Action Comics. Batman is the driving force in DC Comics.
2 – Look at the sales – Batman far outsells Superman and everyone else. Again, Batman is the driving force in DC Comics.

Having said that, I don’t see DC giving up Superman, even if they have to settle for giving up some large royalties. Hard to imagine a DC universe without Supes. DC just needs some long-term vision and good storytelling. They simply haven’t seemed to quite know what to do with Superman for a long time – at least not consistently. He works great as part of a team, but solo he just hasn’t excited comics fandom for quite awhile.

    Just sayin’ …

  52. Ivan_Mtl Says:

I’m guessing that it will ultimately end up being a non-event. However, I can see them announcing that the new Superman film will be the first in a series of DC movies which will eventually lead into a Justice League of America or World’s Finest movie – especially since Christopher Nolan will be completing his Batman arc. But the reality will probably be something trivial like relaunching titles, assigning new creative teams to books, price/format changes, etc.

  53. smith Says:

Streamline the verse and get rid of other versions of Superman? Jeeze of there was no OTHER versions of Superman I dread to think where Superman would be. I would probably never have picked up a Superman comic.I hope they keep the multiverse. I would like to see a JLA movie too and a good Superman movie.

  54. Bb Says:

For all the hype it has to be something bigger than the usual new titles etc. since books like Aquaman are coming. I would like to see DC take back what they first started and the earths separated again fully. Still we know Grant’s book is coming just not how big. We already know the JLA movie is going to happen. For a surprize for many of you there will be a JLA original seven book by a fan fave. There is a announcement about Adam Hughes coming. Who is the new signing to DC? Even with that fans what is THE BIG NEWS! The fact that Superman is the only character singled out might be scary but wait and see.

  55. Mulanzo Says:

Superman isnt going anywhere but I’m extremely excited that Superman is finally getting some attention at DC. I don’t know where the people are getting the idea that he has too many books… He only has Action Comics and Superman which are also some of DCs longest running titles. Two books. And he wasn’t even in them for the past two years. Batman has like 10 books and GL has 3 + every event book. Get off Supermans case…. He’s been scarce in the DCU. It’s time he returns to prominence. I’m betting that coming out of Grounded or Flashpoint, hes going to have a suit redesign and a new effort attitude to satisfy the emos who need every character to be dark and dreary. I’m hoping they just announce a kick ass creative team and an event for the guy. With Man of Steel coming out, they’re going to want to reemphasize him to get him in the public eye again.

  56. 8foottallgopher Says:

Watching the series finale of Smallville, specifically the final scene in the daily planet, I was shocked and saddened by the realization that this superman, the iconic status quo of superman has been completely absent from all forms of media for a long long time now.

The tv show all about the young Clark Kent coming of age

A move 5 years ago about a jealous superman with a kid

In the comics he’s been wandering around, an officer in a kryptonian police force, an ambassador to a newly found society of kryptonians on earth…..

My point is, it would be amazing to get superman back to his roots. Get Clark back to the daily planet with grouchy perry and Jimmy. Maybe even Retcon out his marriage and get the old superman/Lois/Clark three way dynamic back that worked so well for 50 plus yrs for the character.

Outside of that shirt short scene at the end of Smallville the last time we saw the true superman was probably the up up and away arc Way back one year later….

  57. Mulanzo Says:

I know. There’s been a dearth of Superman in all media despite the whining of the haters. He had a little stint in Final Crisis (that needed a graduate degree in literature to get through) but thats it for events. New Krypton was a drawn out mess that put too much emphasis on terribly irrelevant characters (I mean seriously… Guardian, Flamebird and Nightwing are all gone. Talk about a waste of money) Brainiac was good but short, and Grounded is the least Super Superman I’ve ever read. Thank god for DC animated movies. It’s been the only thing keeping me going amid the Green Lantern/Batman/Flash wanking DC had been doing. I’d love a new animated show or another Super Book. Now that he’s back in Action and Superman I plan on actually purchasing DC comics again. Sorry Grant but you lost me at Batman RIP.

  58. SageShini Says:

…Why are there so many assumptions about comics in this post? Geoff’s a comic writer BUT he’s also DC’s CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER. He decides what gets made and how outside of comics, alongside Jim Lee, who heads up the videogame related stuff in addition to being Publisher.

If the two of them are dropping bombshell announcements…it’d be weird if they involved comics since DCE hasn’t announced anything since they mentioned DC Nation. I’d vote for seeing things about movies/cartoons/games over comics right now anyday.

Also…Graeme….uhm, where does it say anything about Flashpoiint?

  59. Mulanzo Says:

I got to thinking about that as well. I didn’t realize this is a film festival. Geoff being there makes sense and maybe he’s there to announce info about the direction of the reboot. If he’s talking about the DCU on film, maybe he’ll say more about Flash, Wonder Woman, JLA, and other B characters. That IS his job afterall. But why would Jim be there? He’s done concept work and art design for DCU online but that’s not anything related to film… Unless he’s there to announce he’s the art and storyboard designer for the Man of Steel movie. His Superman is edgy and gritty and right up Snyders alley. And Snyder mentioned to an interviewer that Jims Superman is his favorite. So maybe he’s there to show some concept work for the film?! I can only hope if thats true… He was asked to design Superman’s rebooted costume. THAT would be something.

  60. Harlock999 Says:

Johns and Lee on new Justice League monthly.

    That’s my bet.

  61. Zennousha Says:

“Final Crisis (that needed a graduate degree in literature to get through” Mulanzo, I also bow before you for your great and on so perfect description of Final Crisis, I laughed so hard because its so so so true Kudos

  62. thelivingtribunal Says:

Maybe Frank Miller will be writing more Dark Knight stories! A new, “dope slap”, for a new decayed! :)

  63. Deep_Shock Says:

That DC Universe without Superman rumor is the most ridiculous thing anyone could post! Especially now that there is a new Superman movie in works from WB…

  64. Shameless Says:

All I know is that DC is planning something big.

I THINK its a complete reboot. So I’m going to rant and rave that I’m sick of it. That DC has no new ideas and that I’m going to stop buying their entire line! All based on absolutely no information! But that wont stop me from jumping to conclusions and whinging for the sake of it! Whos with me?!?

Where is the rolling eyes smiley face when you need it! haha…

  65. von Slaich Says:

Maybe the revelation will be that its the Flashpoint universe which is the real DC universe and the last 70 years has been a dream.

Or the announcement of a Marvel studios DC studio set up to create the JLA movie.

Or rebooting all issues from start (as long as it does not became the cluster f**k which was one year later).

Or Geoff Johns and Jim Lee to take over on Superman and rescue him from the hell hole his publishing appreances have been.

    Or all of the above.

    Or none of the above.

  66. Jason Says:

OH DEAR GOD no massive reboot.

If they feel that way. Create a DC umbrella universe that starts from the beginning. And those books are started from the beginning, have a Superman, Batman, Flash, GL, DC Universe, JSA, JLA and start those from #1. Sort of like Marvel’s Ultimates but actually make it work.

Sorry I like my continuity, I like my Lois & Clark married, I like my 4 GLs, 3 flashes, etc. I read somewhere that in 8 years someone wants Action Comics #1000, I want that.

And I’m going to get some angry people but I’m SICK TO DEATH of the S&S legal battle. The creators are dead, WB/DC has paid them many times over. It’s time for the family to get off S&S laurels.

  67. RobRG Says:

I think whatever happens here will involve the WildStorm Universe folding onto the DCU. Back when de WSU was cancelled, it was said that Lee and Johns already had plans for it inside the DCU, so this may be it.

  68. PatrickJ Says:

Superman – Lois Lane = Sales

    That’s my best guess

  69. ????????? Says:

I know at least part of what’s going to happen!

  70. saulres Says:

@SageShini & @Mulanzo: The posts are assuming comics because the announcement on the Source says “Johns and Lee will be making comic book publishing news at the festival panel.”

  71. The Zug Says:

Previous announcements about a Red Lantern book don’t matter much when your market share keeps tanking.

But I would bet against a total reboot of the DCU. They don’t have the guts. And they don’t care about reaching new audiences. They’ll just keep serving the same shrinking fanbase of aging fanboys until they wither and die.

I wish it were otherwise, but they’re just going to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic.

  72. Kenn Says:

Wonder Woman will return to wearing shorts.

  73. the Prowler Says:

8foottallgopher (now there’s something I never imagined myself typing), you *have* heard of All-Star Superman, right?

  74. Pennyforth Says:

Don’t care, don’t care, don’t care. Not about whatever BS events are going on at either publisher, not about the supposed “changes” or “consequences” brought by any of those events’ finales, not about what new events will inevitably follow the current ones that will inevitably undo those changes with brand-new changes. How about one of the results of Flashpointless being that DC starts to value quality and substance over empty “flash-bang-pow, nothing will ever be the same, and THIS TIME WE MEAN IT, really really really”, and Marvel follows suit? Then I might start caring.

  75. Hailex Says:

My guess is a DC Studios (like Marvel Studios) owned by Warner but dealing exclusively with DC characters. I would guess that the Superman movie next year will be the first film under that banner.

  76. 666MasterOfPuppets Says:

Well, it’s true that a DCU without Superman is the most ridiculous thing ever. Also, it’s true that Superman is the first and greatest, and he deserves to be back in the spotlight. Rao, I’ve been praying for DC to put Morrison as the creative force on the Superman books for years.

  77. danny whittingham Says:

CRAY above is exactly right. Produce less books but still vary the ongoings. A title can continue after a break from where it left off. Also getting a complete story won;t be ac omplete pain in the butt as it is now and also puts off new buyers who haven’t a clue whats going on

  78. jason Says:

i really hope its not another reboot, thats all dc seem to do. Maybe superman and (a) flash will be moved to earth2?

  79. Buntklecks Says:

I’ve just seen the “Superman Returns” DVD again, and then I knew why I had a problem with it, it wasn’t only that it was a 150 mimutes long homage to the Richard Donner movie, Superman was acting like suffering on a big Asberger Syndrome. They did forgot to give him a personality, he had no feelings, no anger, he couldn’t laugh, he was … empty.
    Make the Kryptonian more human.
Don’t worry, it works, see Smallville.
And this series used the Donner movie parts, like settings and music, with more creativity.

My hope for the new DCU? Ahm, let Europe survive, danke schön.

  80. Letterman23 Says:

As much fun as they were, and as much nostalgia as they produce, the Donner Superman movies were the worst thing to ever happen to the character. They redefined the character from an immigrant/Moses story to a messianic/Super Jesus story, and the character just isn’t interesting when a part of his power set is super-righteousness. So the fact that Johns and Lee have chosen a screening of those two movies to make their exciting announcement gives me pause.

  81. DoctorTom Says:

One of the announcements will be for the DC Universe to put everything back to issue #1 in September, whether or not it’s a full reboot.

Notice how the announcement is scheduled so that it will be just shortly before word leaks out about the Previews solicitations for September, and that they’re ending just about every storyline they can in August right before Flashpoint #5. They want to get a media announcement out before it leaks from people seeing Previews.

  82. Scott Says:

Justice League Black by Geoff Johns & Jim Lee

  83. Grez10 Says:

Theres no way this would ever happen, but I awlays thought it would be cool if Marvel and DC traded off Superman and Spiderman for a year. Supes in the Marvel universe would be great and the impact it had as well as what he would bring back would make for great stories. Also what the state of the DCU would be due to his absence. Would the DCU realize they didnt need a Superman and things were better off without? Would Supes raelize how effed up the DCU is and start taking a different aproache to the way he did things? I just always thought it would be a great story/gimmick/event.

The Johns/Lee anouncment…I constantly have one foot in the door, one foot out with both DC and Marvel, so the less I care-the more surprised/outraged/excited/indifferent my reaction will be.

Either way-looking forward to it cause the big 2 has been making more money lately with their properties but creativly they need a shot in the arm.

  84. jason1040 Says:

Anybody who thinks DC is going to announce Superman is gone is a complete moron. You really think they’re going thru the trouble of doing a new film, and they’re scrapping him from the comics? Get a clue people.

The announcement will be something to do with either a new television series, or more likely a new film. Smart money says DC had gotten their shit together and are following Marvel’s lead, and will announce a Justice League movie.

  85. Jesse Sanchez Says:

I don’t understand everyone’s complaint that they couldn’t do a total company-wide reboot. If every book started back at issue one, that doesn’t necessarily mean it would be the first Flash adventure, or the first Batman adventure and why the devil would all of DC’s comic book readers sit through yet another retelling of any characters origin, much less all of them? As for Lee and Johns being on a project that to me sounds like the most plausible case, (maybe GL and the straight to GN books on other earth’s that DC is doing like with Superman and Bats) and likely from there they’ll just tease out more of what might happen come September. Or they might tell us what will happen to their comics in September. Like every issue will be standalone so anyone can walk into any comic shop and buy anything and completely get the story and the character without the burden of years of continuity, as a way to invite non-comics readers to read DC comics. More than likely though, whatever it is, it isn’t likely something that will a) be that important as b) it isn’t likely to stick and c) the status quo will return by early 2012.

  86. Eido Says:

Wonder Woman gets retitled Empress Wonder Woman. The Award Winning Writer: JT Skrul

Teen Titans and Green Arrow (rebooted yet again): JT Skrul

There are others previously announced and you know what they are thanks to rumors.

  87. 8foottallgopher Says:

    Prowler….
Of course, I love All Star Superman. But even that is just a silver age throwback superman series.

What I want to see is modern age superman stories with the character taken back to his “traditional” status quo. I mean, at least put him back in metropolis. Put lex back there too while you’re at it. Losing the marriage would be great, but not essential. Put Clark back in the daily planet. In fact when was the last time Clark Kent even appeared? It’s like superman has dropped his identity almost completely.

  88. Perry Says:

“What does DC have in store for Superman and can this young, hot creative duo launch Clark Kent and his alter ego into the future?” –

    SUPERMAN BEYOND !!!!
