The reason why the original X-Men were wearing the uniforms during much of their dormant days was because the X-Men book was reprinting their early years (pre-#39).

Rogue's circa-1987 black bodysuit with green accesories is cool!

WAYNE MARTIN: You know, I wasn't terribly excited for this film, but the advanced reviews are seriously starting to turn me around. Pleasant surprise.

REID: But you still read and add comments, both of which are helpful and appreciated. And it's never an extra effort to say thank you. :-)

The X-men's graduation costumes were pretty awesome, but Angel needed some development. Marvel Girl's green and yellow outfit rocks. Makes me want to dig up my "X-men: The Lost Years" series by Byrne.

WOOFUS: Yeah, the Avenging Angel outfit has some fun points to it but largely doesn't quite make sense.

REID: Thanks for reading.

PREDABOT: Not a bad idea. We'll see what happens.

DAVEO: Thanks for the comment, it's appreciated. And I hear you about the First Class outfits. :-)

This one is certainly one of my favourites. Excellent article, mr Kistler!

Have you ever considered holding a special column, where you take on your biggest fav's of Superhero-costumes, and consider how you would update or redesign them?

I think a special like that would be super-awesome, really!

I liked Angel's yellow shirt, red suspenders costume. It worked for the Champions, anyway. I first started reading him in those early issues of Spectacular Spider-Man, where he wore the red version of the "halo on the chest" costume. (Apparently somebody forgot.) I like that one too, although it makes you wonder why an "angel" would want so much red in his costume!

The thing that always resonated for me was that blue and yellow/gold are customary (high) school colors in many parts of the states. Always seemed like the right color scheme to go for in terms of a group of scholarly powered teens to me as a result.

T.: That had actually been done a few times before. It just became a consistent standard when Jean redid the costumes. But I'll add a note about that.

DOUG SKYWALKER: No. That wasn't the first/original class of X-Men nor was it a direct imitation of the original uniforms. There were a couple of similarities for a couple of the outfits, but they were mainly wearing standard/generic superhero gear.

Jean didn’t do that much to alter the costumes, really. She made the belts red to add some contrast, complaining that their initial uniforms has too much yellow. She evidently fixed how Beast’s suit fit on him, giving him an “increase in freedom of movement.”

Look again. She did more than that. Before the yellow part on the upper body covered the whole torso and only the sleeves were blue on the torso. Jean Grey made the yellow part of the torso into a giant "V" so that now the blue on the sleeves also extended to the ribcage. This change is why the Beast now says he feels his range of movement has been increased, because the arms are now less constricted.

great article!
i expected you to touch down more on the New Mutants outfits tho. they didn't just use the original x-men designs, they had two different distinct designs, one for the boys with a straight vertical cut, and one for the girls with a more V-shape. and customisation was a huge deal in that series early on, with Moonstar getting into fights with professor x for wearing her own belt and boots instead of the standard issue :)

also, how about a nod to the Generation-X red and gold costumes and how they later influenced the merge of the two styles in the New Xmen (yost/kyle) costumes that are still being used? :)

Other appearances during the book's dormant period the X-Men had, for unknown reasons, gone back to their original school uniforms.

Only in MARVEL TEAM-UP #4 did the original X-Men (minus the Beast)appear sans costumes. That was also my first time "meeting" them.

There was also a period in the 70s, after their title was cancelled, that the X-Men didn't wear any uniforms at all. Any guest-shots they did in other titles was usually in street clothes
