DC’s August Solicits: Is This The End, My Friend?

May 17th, 2011

I’m not the only person who’s been noticing that this month’s DC solicitations are full of conclusions and priming things for a large number of post-Flashpoint relaunches and new status quos, am I? I’m not just talking about the final issues of all things Flashpoint-related; Green Lantern continues its absence in the aftermath of the “War of The Green Lanterns” storyline, while the War of The Green Lantern Aftermath #2 solicit promises the identity of “the new Green Lantern of Sector 2814.” Justice League of America #60 has the team deciding “whether they have anything left to offer the DC Universe.”  The final issue of Batman: Gates of Gotham “sets the stage for a bold new direction in the Bat books,” while Secret Six #36 (6 x 6!) promises that “No one escapes unscathed in this one – and the Six won’t ever be the same!” Meanwhile, storylines reach their climax in Superman, Action Comics, Detective Comics, Wonder Woman and Superboy, and the final issue of Brightest Day Aftermath: The Search for Swamp Thing promises to reveal Swamp Thing’s “dark motives” (Or maybe that should be “Dark motives”?).

It’s almost like they’re clearing the decks for something, isn’t it? Hmm. Well, the solicits for September will be the first post-Flashpoint, post-Brightest Day solicitations, won’t they? I’m guessing relaunches for Flash and Green Lantern at the very least, along with new series for Aquaman and maybe Swamp Thing… and maybe the kind of linewide renewal that we haven’t seen at DC since the days of One Year Later. But what do you think?

Yep. I wrote about this on my blog, too.

One thing you haven’t mentioned is Teen Titans rushing to reach #100, with two issues shipping in both July and August. A number of other titles are also double-shipping over the next few months in order to reach conclusions before August 31, including Detective Comics and Superboy.

I’m guessing that Dick Grayson is done being Batman, too. At least, that’s what the solicit for Batman in August suggests, with its reference to him being at an “identity crossroads” or whatever.

September solicitations are going to be very interesting!

I suspect the September solicitations will all have descriptions [Classified].

  3. Sam Says:

I’m thinking Abin Sur survives Flashpoint and will be back as the GL of sector 2814. We’ll probably see a few characters crossover like Age of Apocolypse. I’m also hoping if thats true we get Captain Thunder I kinda liked that from issue 1

  4. Funk Doctor Says:

If DC releases a whole month of solicits as [Classified] you’ll hear the head of every retailer in the country’s head exploding in rage and frustration.

  5. Supermutant Says:

For the love of Stan Lee I hope not.

  6. Criffer Says:

Along those lines, remember back in February that Batwoman was pushed back to September, and many assumed JH Williams was running late but he and Amy Reeder both said they were in good shape and that it was an editorial decision out of their hands.
Sounds like a line-wide reset may be in store in September.

  7. Chris B. Says:

I hope every single mainline DC book gets relaunched. That would be a really great place for me to get back into buying more than 1 or 2 books here and there like I’ve been doing for the last year.

  8. Lick My Palicki Says:

A reboot? There were no rumors about a reboot? /sarcasm

How much notice does Marvel have to give to start renumbering the rest of their books werent rebooted minus Daredevil, Ghost Rider, and Punisher? Remember they copy everything.

  9. Mike Says:

And don’t forget that we just “ended” the Flash ongoing.

Ugh. Hadn’t notice the indications of reboots until you lined them all up in this article. I sure hope not. There are very few Marvel titles I buy, and one of the reasons is they seem to have a new #1 every few minutes. I would hope DC isn’t stupid enough to do something like give new #1′s to half their line, especially when a lot of those things are still top-sellers.

Still, I guess there are ways they can re-invigorate the line without destroying everything they have built. Come on DC! Don’t let me down!

  10. Rolando Garcia Says:

So long as it doesn’t get in the way of Batman, Inc. I could care less.

  11. Kevin Street Says:

Keep the numbers, relaunch the continuity. Or rather, relaunch some of the continuity, for the characters who really need it. Wonder Woman, I’m looking at you.
