The problem with the first batch of Justice League characters (Impulse, Aquaman, and Cyborg) seems to be that they found something that really worked for Green Arrow and then tried to force it onto other characters for a sense of visual continuity.

I can just see that hood on Bart catching some wind at supersonic speed, ripping off and snapping around for a Super Saber death scene.... and it would cause some severe drag on Aquaman's wetsuit as well.

AMBER: Me too.

DANGERSMITH: Valid complaints and feelings, but the one thing I have to correct is your saying Clark stayed around Smallville. In the TV show, he was in high school during the first four seasons so naturally he wasn't leaving. He began spending half his time in Metropolis in Season 5, later working as a copy boy for the Daily Planet until he became a full-time journalist in Season 8. And he still spent time at the farm because, in the continuity of the TV show, Smallville is just a couple hours drive from Metropolis. So living in Metropolis, by definition, meant he would stay nearby Smallville anyway. Not saying I agree with that creative decisions (Metropolis belongs on the East Coast), just pointing out a detail.

Smallville just never did it for me.
Even with a low budget I feel this show had the potential to be very good and tell great stories. How does someone destined to be the man of steel just stay tethered in and around Smallville most of the time.
A great series of stories could have been told of Clark traveling to various parts of the world (on foot, maybe) to learn about this adopted world he inhabits. But no, we get Clark dealing with teenage angst and highschool melodrama ad-nauseum, and action scenes that are so fake and safe to watch.
The season finale farewell was just a rip-off! I'm glad I only watched a few shows here and there, I gave it a chance but it just didn't work for me.

One thing to add about Aquaman:
In his first appearance, he mentioned that he was going to the University of Miami. And their colors? Orange and Green.

I think these costumes were supposed to be slightly more realistic because most people would just wear cool clothes like a trenchcoat then a actual costume spandex and all. I'd rather they start taking notes from young justice because that show can make anyone look cool.

My understanding of the chest plate on Hawkman was that it was a practical consideration in order to hide the harness system that held on the wings and supported Shanks during the wire work.

I'm chalking up the Blue Beetle to "small budget / no time / one use only." There are a lot of better-looking bug costumes out there (see Japan's Kamen Rider series, which would probably horrify Alan if he had to do an article on their costumes since that series is 40 years old).
Frankly I like Phil Morris's Martian Manhunter look. It does take a high amount of cleverness to translate MM's colors to what's supposed to pass as everyday clothing.
Hawkman: it's pretty much only the wings that jar. If they went for a metallic hang-glider look that might work.

Smallville recycled an old “Big Bad Beetleborg” suit and had it double as the Blue Beetle."

Now that's just an insult to Big Bad Beetleborgs. Hell, the suits in that show looked waaaaay better than the Blue Beetle one featured in Smallville.

Well, I know most of them looked cheesy but I think they were all great for the show. Well, except Beetle (power rangers villain indeed) and Cyborg (yeah needs more metal, just add a metal glove would've work).

I believe its how the stars wear them that counts. If they look good in it then that's a big BIG for me. I mean whichever costume Elena Satine wore as Mera makes her soooo HOT!!! Ditto for Laura Vandervoort. I remember that costume she wore in the Phantom Zone which emulates her being the Darkseid queen. But yeah, the latest generic look looked ridiculous sometimes.

Great piece, as always, Alan. A lot of these looks were trying, but they didn't quite hit the mark. One thing I thought was clever was the explanation given for Aquaman's look in his original appearance: A.C. was a fan of the University of Miami Hurricanes, and so, he wore their colors.

Still, none of that cleverness can save Impulse's look.

I think they mostly succeeded given what atmosphere they wanted to achieve and what was probably a small budget...

There are so many outfits here that could have been saved by small changes - Bart's for example could have worked with just some extra detailing. Aquaman's body suit in a different colour would have looked perfect. Mera's was a wasted opportunity. Totally agree about Blue Beetle's suit. It's clumsy. And Booster's - the fake abs are an issue but overall the suit is superb. Hawkman's only problem is you needed a beefier actor to play him - Hawk is a flying tank - he needs to be built like one. A bigger guy would have made that suit look perfect.

There is one item that totally surpasses its comic counterpart though - J'onn's purple jacket. I want! And I totally want J'onn in a purple jacket forever now. Just slap it over his current look and I'd be very happy.

I gotta be honest, with the exception of Blue Beetle, Hawkman and maybe Supergirl, most of the costumes above suck.

Cyborg looks like he's about to play Lazertag.

Martian Manhunter's is probably the worst. As if it wasn't for the straps, you'd never know it was him. In fact, the purple coat reminds me more of the Joker.

Impulse's is just boring, like you said.

Booster Gold's I will admit isn't bad, but he looks too much like he's in NASCAR. Maybe a slightly different material would have fixed that.

If they stuck with the traditional Orange/Green, Aquaman's would actually be pretty good. But the black costume makes him look like he's in one of the X-Men movies. Slap a pair of visors on him and he looks like Cyclops.

Mera's is also boring, but I think that could easilly be fixed if they simply had her wear a crown.
