Grant Morrison looks to be making his screenwriting debut with Dominion: Dinosaurs Versus Aliens, according to Deadline. Men in Black‘s Barry Sonnenfeld will direct.

The plot, as the title strongly implies, depicts an alien invasion in the time of dinosaurs. It’s part of a “publishing/movie deal” with Liquid Comics — the former Virgin Comics — that will also see Morrison writing a Dinosaurs Versus Aliens graphic novel. That’s slated for later this year, with art by Mukesh Singh, who worked with Morrison on Dynamite and Liquid’s 18 Days. A Newsarama interview with Morrison on that story is here.

UPDATE: Full press release, from Liquid Comics, after the jump.

NEW YORK, NY- May 10, 2011  – Barry Sonnenfeld (Men In Black, Get Shorty, Addams Family, Addams Family Values and “Pushing Daisies,” for which Sonnenfeld received an Emmy for directing), announced today a publishing and producing partnership with Liquid Comics and producer, Arnold Rifkin (Hostage, 16 Blocks, Live Free or Die Hard). Under the new partnership, Sonnenfeld will simultaneously develop a graphic novel and film property called, “Dominion: Dinosaurs Versus Aliens,” with superstar comic book writer, Grant Morrison (Batman, The Invisibles, 18 Days), who will write both the graphic novel and the screenplay.

“Growing up my fascination was all things dinosaur, and as an adult, I’ve had some success making films about aliens, so this is a dream come true. I met Sharad several years ago when I wrote a forward for one of Liquid’s graphic novels and we’ve been trying to do a project together ever since,” commented Sonnenfeld.

The story for Dominion: Dinosaurs Versus Aliens is based on a secret world war battle that was never recorded in our history books. When an alien invasion attacks Earth in the age of the dinosaurs, our planet’s only saviors are the savage prehistoric beasts which are much more intelligent than humanity has ever imagined.

Sonnenfeld, Rifkin and Liquid’s CEO & Co-founder, Sharad Devarajan shall be Producers on the film, with WME packaging the project. Morrison and Liquid’s Co-founder, Gotham Chopra shall also be attached as Executive Producers.

“My collaboration with such pedigreed talents as Barry, Sharad, and Grant has proven to be a wonderful creative experience, and I look forward to being a part of bringing Barry’s vision to the screen,” added Arnold Rifkin, President of Cheyenne Enterprises.

Liquid will launch the first graphic novel story for the franchise later this year in print and digital formats for the iPad, iPhone and other mobile devices. Artwork for the graphic novel will be done by acclaimed Liquid Comics artist, Mukesh Singh (Gamekeeper, Devi, 18 Days).

“This epic story is everyone’s dream battle come to life. We are thrilled to work with Barry Sonnenfeld to bring his vision of dinosaurs versus aliens to the world and with Arnold Rifkin whose prolific experience as a producer will enable us to take this story to the screen,” added Liquid’s CEO, Sharad Devarajan. “Barry’s creativity is also enhanced by the amazing talents of Grant Morrison who remains one of graphic fiction’s modern masters.”

Sounds utterly ridiculous, but could also be a lot of fun.

My big question is this: is this movie going to have no dialogue? Or are some humans going to get tossed back in time and get caught between dinos and aliens?

  2. Brandon Yates Says:

Anything Vs. Aliens is awesome. Except other aliens.

  3. Logan Says:

So what exactly is the difference between this and Cowboys and Aliens? Unless it’s more than that I don’t see this movie going very far.

  4. Rich Says:

    More incomprehensible comics from Morrison!!

  5. Tb Says:

Logan, are you asking what the difference is between dinosaurs and cowboys?

  6. akachris Says:

I can’t wait to Cowboys vs Dinosaurs vs Aliens

  7. Blake Says:

Morrison is only incomprehensible to those who don’t know how to think.

  8. Aaron Says:

Grant Morrison is such a bizarre bloke, stranger than any character in fiction. The kind no one could make up (except maybe Grant Morrison)! Someone should make a movie about him.

  9. Logan Says:

@akachris. No I’m just saying that the premise sounds very very similar. What makes one stand out from the other?

  10. Richard Says:

I wonder if these intelligent dinosaurs will lead into the myth/conspiracy theories of lizard people who are behind the Illuminati, globalists, etc. (as per David Icke)?

There’s already a documentary on Morrison: “Talking With Gods”…so it’s not a movie, but still nice to watch (if you’re a fan).

Yeah, and I’m getting sick of the Morrison bashing. I’m sure there are some who are sick of the Morrison-worship as well…but all the relentless criticism, cynicism and negativity gets so tiring after a while.

  11. TRE Says:

Should be fun! Grant Morrison is a great storyteller. The only question is will the Hollywood blockbuster system rip everything decent out of his script and go overboard with cheesy CGI… which seems highly probable.
