Practice Pays Off: Bullets Top NYCB

DC Bullets SoftballOn Thursday, April 28, the DC Bullets were supposed to match up against Archie Comics. It rained; the game was cancelled. This past Thursday, another match-up against a comics industry softball squad was missed when Wizard cancelled on the Bullets barely 24 hours before gametime. (If they weren’t already dead to me, they’d be dead to me now, I jested.) So the Bullets took the field anyway – those field permits are use ‘em or lose ‘em, after all.

After a productive practice, New York Community Bank showed up for a 7:00pm game on the same field. Except their opponent also stood them up. Rather than have both teams go home disappointed, the Bullets and NYCB opted to play a friendly few innings. In a lopsided four-inning affair, the Bullets emerged victorious, 23-10.

All thirteen Bullets batted in the first inning (and leadoff hitter Neil Hiremath got to the plate twice), and the first out wasn’t made until the twelfth hitter, leftfielder John Choi, grounded into a fielder’s choice. John started a trend, however, as the next two hitters were both retired as well. NYCB answered the Bullets 8 run first with a massive two-run home run to centerfield in the bottom half.

DC tacked on nine more runs in the second, highlighted by CF Jay Kogan’s three-run home run into the left field corner and DH LP Vollano’s running-through-the-third-base-coach’s-stop-sign grand slam. NYCB scored four in the second, and after a scoreless turn by the Bullets in the third, add two more. DC scored six more times in the fourth, limited NYCB to another two spot in the bottom half, before the setting sun snatched away the necessary daylight.

The Bullets return to action this coming Monday against The Daily Show.
