Incidentally, when Alan got his "young again" 90s look, I believe one of the ideas in the hopper was to get rid of Hal and replace him with Alan, not Kyle.

This was the rationale for the costume and the rejuvenation and the similarities to the GLC logo were in place because some wanted to pass the whole GL brand back to Alan.

I seem to recall hearing that Marz's first choice would have been to make Alan the star but Carlin and the other editors really pushed him to create Kyle.

So the logo makes sense if you wanted to recontextualize the Corps as an "failed Alan Scott spinoff" and position Alan as the center of the GL brand, which is one avenue that some were looking at.

Another great piece, Alan. Any thoughts on doing an article on Loki? He has had some very interesting outfits over the years, and I would love to read your thoughts on his look(s) in the THOR film.

@Woofus: The ring and lantern were homages to the Aladdin story. Magic lantern = magic lamp. The genie can grant you any wish = make whatever you can imagine. The ring = Aladdin's other magic item with a genie.

I don't think there were a lot of Chinese influences in the GL mythos until the retcon in GL vol.3 no.19, where they tried to merge Alan's story with the OAn GLs.

I was under the impression that it was also a take on the Aladdin myth. Alan Scott's original name was "Alan Ladd."

Way back when, Martin Nodell apparently caught a glimpse of a railway signalman (green means "go"), which made him think of Diogenes (hence the boots that look like Greek sandals). Proust fans will recall what used to be called Chinese lanterns (they project shadowy shapes onto the wall), which explains both the Chinese motif and the ring's ability to create magical objects. (Chinese people being well known for having magical powers.) Green is also the color of jade, which is very Chinese-y. I'm not sure why there had to be a ring as well as a lantern--maybe that was thought to be a "Chinese" motif as well. A lot of this gets lost with the switch to Hal Jordan and science-fiction themes.

I prefer the 1990's look, including the redesigned logo. The original logo is just too clunky. Actually there was an even better one (maybe from "Zero Hour"?)in which the top and bottom of the lantern continue all the way to the collar and beltline, rather than being truncated (as in the illustrations above). I wouldn't mind seeing Jade wear something like this ("Jade Lantern"?), although the character herself resembles She-Hulk a bit too closely for my liking.

John Carter pretty much walked around naked, except for a weapons harness. Dejah Thoris, too.

Glad I'm not alone in my dislike for the current look. Very clunkly looking. I once switche the colors on Alan Scott's costume. Green Shirt with red pants and made the cape a dark green. While it should "work", it didn't. Guess I'm used to it know.

Havr you done Sandman? There's a guy with color problems!

The modern look from the 90's is cool and i don't mind him being called sentinel because it could be his callsign during missions so that he isnt confused with the others.

I'm liking the Kingdom Come armor better than the living armor one.

I love me some Golden Age Green Lantern. The classic look is my favorite. I'm glad the Sentinel nonsense is gone, but I'm very disappointed with GL's newest look. He looks ridiculous.

To me George Freeman always draws the best Alan Scott G.L., He gives the tunic that perfect swashbuckling feel. And the simplicity of his line-work is addictive.
Truly a underrated artist.

"And unlike many character redesigns in the 1990s, it does not involve unnecessary pouches, extra belts, spikes and/or shoulder pads." - I'm really trying to picture a Alan Scott in a Cable-inspired Green Lantern costume. It's rather hilarious and ridiculous. I'm also really creeped out by that panel of Obsidian saying "Daddy?" That's just wrong on so many levels.

@Androoo - I'm the complete opposite. I can't stand him not being called Green Lantern. I wasn't reading comics when he was going by Sentinel, but I recently read the Starman storyline where he shows up as a 20 something and nobody's calling him Green Lantern and my reaction was just "what the hell is this?" I hated that concept. That'd be like calling Jay Garrick "The Guardian" or "The Protector" or something generic like that (and then just getting rid of Wally and Bart) now that Barry is back. But then again, I'm a sucker for legacy characters like Green Lantern, Flash, and Starman. In my opinion, one of the coolest things about comics is their history, and nothing personifies more than characters like that.

SHAUN: As I said in this article, Alan and the JSA were exposed to strange energies during an adventure in the 1940s that retarded their aging and increased their vitality. Jay also has the added benefit of the Speed Force which helps him heal faster and keeps his body more vital, while Alan has stated in numerous adventures that his ring often affects his body, helping wounds heal and such. And Catman was meant to be a bit of Wildcat and a bit of the Golden Age Batman, who was indeed a member of the JSA. And The Sportsman was meant to emulate one of Alan Scott's arch-enemies, the Sportsmaster.

I suppose I should consult Wikipedia, but I never understood how old Alan Scott is (Jay Garrick, for that matter) and how they're still alive, not to mention in crime fighting shape.

Also, that "Justice Guild" episode of Justice League... Good stuff, but I don't know that every character was a stand-in for the JSA. The "Catman" character... He sure looked like 1950's era Batman to me. Having the kid sidekick riding in the sidecar of the motorcycle and all that. Plus, the villain he was chasing down (The Sportsman or something like that?) had a Riddler look to him.

Great article as always Alan. The original Green Lantern is one of those characters (like Hourman or the mohawked Gladiator) where it's a costume that really SHOULDN"T work, but has a)some kind of charm in its earnestness and b) become accepted through repeated drawing and is 'legitimized' by being drawn by some many artists.
