DC: “Flashpoint Counts, Honest!”

April 15th, 2011
Author Graeme McMillan

In case you were thinking that DC was gambling a lot with 20 titles for an alternate-world story like Flashpoint, today’s “Flashpoint Friday” posts on The Source may have caught your eye. Specifically, the part where they essentially said that it’s not just an alternate-world story:

Dan Jurgens: There will be lasting effects.

Adam Schlagman: Wait until you see the end. Oh boy, does it matter. Plus the emotional context will register with all DC fans for all eternity.

Dan Abnett: We can’t talk about that yet. But oh my god…

Jeff Lemire: Because, unlike past events, this one REALLY does change everything.

Scott Snyder wraps the post up with the clearest quote:

It’s just a great tale, really imaginative, epic, with lost of twists and turns… But if you’re looking for a “will it change the DCU,” the answer is definitely yes.

The question is now, will this be a post-continuity-”No More Mutants” or yet-another history-gets-rewritten-instead-of-restored changing of the DCU? For those keeping track at home, that’s already happened in Crisis on Infinite Earths, Zero Hour, Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis, so I guess everyone in the DCU should be used to it by now…

    Has it started yet?

Burned too many times lately, as Johns work over the last year has been very underwhelming. The end of Blackest Night fell very flat. Enough so that I stopped getting GL books shortly after. Not being a big Flash fan, particularly Barry, I think I’ll take the summer off as it relates to events.

    And I still don’t care.

  4. H Says:

I may have missed it, but what sort of history was rewritten in Final Crisis?

I agree with Cisco Kid–I anticipated John’s return to the Flash being just as good as Green Lantern: Rebirth and was mightily disappointed. Kubert art is always a nice thing to see, so I may be picking this up, but I’m not going to hold my breath on any real changes to the DCU. Giving Aquaman a new costume constitutes “THINGS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME” lately…which is ironic because, as the DC Universe editors clearly can see, things ALWAYS go back to being the same in DC books. For all the nonsense of the 90s era, at least I can say that I saw new things back then. Kyle Rayner as GL, new characters–some terrible–but at least an effort at doing something different. For me, that beats the Silver Age fetishism that has gripped DC since Johns became their main storyteller. It’s even infected Grant Morrison, pushing him into his weird little Batcorner, where everything has the bland aftertaste of late 70s back issues.

That said, Flashpoint comes off as DC’s version of the Age of Apocalypse. I would guess that a few characters from the “off” timeline make their way into the main “normal” time in the same way Dark Beast and young Nathan Summers did in AOA. This is probably the “big lasting changes” being plugged.

An intro to next year’s Justice League Civil War event?

Hmmmn… I’m not a hater of ‘events’ by any means, some are good fun, others…not so much.

But for SO many fans, investing in such a gargantuan event, especially considering how commonplace they are becoming, is something they will be reluctant to commit to.

With the double-whammy of Flashpoint and Fear Itself running simultaneously, I think it’s likely some of the spin-off mini series will get quite low sales, as will some of the already lower-selling ongoing titles that aren’t connected with either event.

I’d much rather see fewer, better ongoing titles, than endless ‘world-changing’ crossovers, but I suppose the bottom line has always been – and always will be – profits.

I’d encourage everyone to either read Flashpoint because they are interested in the story, or ignore it because they are not. Don’t buy it because you think it “counts”. If you care about that shit, just read the wikipedia page 2 minutes after each issue comes out.

  9. Mark Engblom Says:

Utterly uninterested in Flashpoint. I think DC’s getting a whiff of the fan apathy, which is why they’re amping up the “OH MY GOD, THIS IS CRAAZY!”-speak from the creators. I’m afraid they’ve gone to that well one too many times. I’m done with it.

Justice League Civil War would be more interesting than this.
