What Is Vengeance?

April 8th, 2011
Author Graeme McMillan

Maybe I’m the only one who’s noticed this, but over on his blog at Marvel.com, the social-media expert that is Agent M has been posting daily teaser images for something called Vengeance:

But he’s not saying what Vengeance actually is, just yet. Now, I recognize Nighthawk (of The Defenders/Squadron Supreme/Squadron Sinister) in there, and that snake woman could be a redesigned Princess Python, but the little reverso-black-and-white kid? Unless he’s an escapee from Star Trek, I have no idea. Marvel fans, help me out here! Is this some kind of Defenders revamp? The mysterious project Ed Brubaker teased when he said that the new Cap and Bucky series “ties directly into what’s going on in Captain America and Fear Itself, and sets up future plans for [CLASSIFIED]“? Something to finally explain all those appearances of Martian imagery across the line in the last couple of years?

Of course, avenging something is seeking Vengeance, isn’t it…? Maybe someone should be asking Bendis what’s going on?

The woman looks like Miranda Leevald, the former mutant and New Warrior who was first known as Stacy X as a prostitute at the X Ranch and then briefly an X-Man before losing her powers of pheromone control. After the Decimation when Scarlet Witch removed the powers of most of the world’s Mutants Miranda became the New Warrior Ripcord under the original Night Thrasher’s brother Bandit, who had himself lost his abilities and taken his deceased brother’s costumed identity as a tribute to his legacy and restarted the New Warriors with other de-powered Mutants.

    She is currently deceased.

The version of Nighthawk up there is Joaquin Pennyworth, the son of Kyle Richmond’s financial adviser, and Joaquin was a former SHIELD Agent Richmond was training to replace him in the most recent Defenders series, the Last Defenders, by Joe Casey. The Nighthawk costume above is the one Joaquin wore in glimpses of a possible future during the Last Defenders mini.

And finally, the black and white kid looks like a tween/teen version of the In-Betweener, a classic Marvel cosmic entity, the embodiment of duality (naturally), focusing on the balance between good and evil. He has encountered Silver Surfer and other Marvel comics cosmic mainstays and oftentimes appears in concert with Lord Chaos and Master Order, other abstract entities in the Marvel cosmic-sphere.

These were also shown (briefly) at WonderCon — and yeah, that definitely looks like Stacy X…

  3. Serge Zehmyan Says:

He could be a youthful re-imagining of the In-Betweener?

Maybe Vengence will follow on the heels of Fear Itself?

  4. Graeme McMillan Says:

Wait… So it’s Stacy-X, as created by Joe Casey, and a future Nighthawk, as created by Joe Casey? I sense a theme here.
