We’ve since glimpses of the X-Men: First Class cast in trailers and leaked promo shots but we finally get to see a few mutants up-close and in their comic book garb. And yes, they include that one you’ve particularly been waiting for…
The images come via this week’s Empire magazine cover. In fact, much like comic books, they’re offering a few variant covers. The first features January Jones in all her Emma Frost glory, Michael Fassbender as Magneto and Jason Flemyng as Azazel.
The second shows Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, James McAvoy’s familiar Charles Xavier pose and Nicholas Hoult all Beasty.
There’s even a third cover for subscribers only, showing Magneto and Xavier on a nice chrome X-background.
So what do you folks think? Even though Jones is basically wearing just a bra for a top, it’s still not as revealing as I expected Emma’s costumes to be. And anyone else think they should have put the blue characters on the red background or some other color? They’re kind of fading into it instead of popping out like they should be. Both Lawrence and Hoult look pretty good to me.
The issue itself has behind-the-scenes access to the prequel, including interviews with director Matthew Vaughn and the cast.
X-Men: First Class is in theaters June 2.

The Emma Frost costume does not work at all
March 28th, 2011 at 3:43 pm
Yeah, really really not digging the Frost outfit at all. It’s way to simple and just… unimaginative. They had so much to work with and really came up short. I’m really not feeling Mystique’s either.

I wonder why they avoided hiring stunners like Rebecca Romin this time?! Maybe they work for less money if they’re less gorgeous!
March 29th, 2011 at 7:06 am
@thelivingtribunal. Yes, clearly there are no “stunners” this time out. And you’re right, of course, people found to be less attractive are indeed less deserving of higher pay or even respect. Wise words. We are waiting, of course, for the opportunity to review your photos and read your measurements, you sexy beast, you.

Yeah, I am not one to comment on ‘movie costumes’ but I was thinking Emma’s looks waaaay too plain. Mystique just looks “off”…As always I will “wait and see”…
March 29th, 2011 at 8:07 am
I actually like the looks of the entire cast. For everyone saying Emma’s costume looks too plain, you have to keep in mind that this film takes place during the ’60s and that look would’ve been highly revealing way back then. I’m definitely looking forward to this film. With Matthew Vaughn on board, I’m not even slightly skeptical. Kick-Ass and Stardust were both amazing comic-to-film adaptations. The only thing I’m curious about is whether a X-Men film can succeed in terms of box office without Wolverine or any big A-list stars.

I would rather have seen Hank McCoy as the Pre-transformation Beast.

ROger, in a business where attractiveness counts more than most, I was just mentioning that they didn’t hire models this time, and that perhaps economics were a consideration. Irrespective of relative beauty, economics and aging are the reasons they don’t continue making movies with the original cast. Pick any character in this new movie that was in the other three and tell me the current actor/actress isn’t working for less money! Hiring unknowns is the same reason that there’s so many reality shows. They’ll work for a pittance compared to established names. I guess I should’ve included a smiley in my previous post because I meant it to be humorous, not a scathing critique!

Not is Emma’s outfit a failure of imagination, is Mistique’s hairline receeding?
March 29th, 2011 at 8:57 am
Sadly this doesn’t make me want to see the movie more. Though odds are I will see it. I just think of the Fantastic Four movie after seeing this. Mystique’s hair does look odd. Please be a good movie!

I’m not impressed by what I’m seeing. I would have liked to see something focusing on the original six X-Men (including Xavier) done with a strong retro period feeling. What I’m seeing looks like a mishmash without a strong sense of style.
March 29th, 2011 at 9:34 am
Going with two blue characters next to Xavier makes it seem like a smurf film. And Magneto is eerily ass-less, I’m sorry.
March 29th, 2011 at 10:15 am
This has “made for TV” written all over it from the look of the costumes.
March 29th, 2011 at 11:44 am
Beast does appear pre-fur for half the movie….and, having read the shooting script, I think the costumes are the least of our worries.
March 29th, 2011 at 2:19 pm
First Class has error written all over it. It’s missing the point of the true “First Class” and just tossing random characters around.
I’ll likely see it just because but if the rumors of X4 and X5 are true I want it to fail just to see those happen. I’m curious to see what they would do to redeem the plot holes of X3.
Personally, I’d like to see X4- The Search for Cyclops>>> this can have Sinister and the Jean Grey clone and maybe some Cable which would lead to X5: Apocalypse.
March 29th, 2011 at 2:23 pm
No mention of the biggest problem of all – the mere presence of Azazel?
Not only should his existence not be further highlighted by a movie appearance, someone really needs to retcon him and the story he appeared in out of existence ASAP (and I don’t care how much you might hate retcons, this merits it).
Maybe they could do that when they bring Nightcrawler back to life.
March 29th, 2011 at 2:24 pm
The costumes look fine to me…I’ll see the movie. Btw, Jennifer Lawrence IS a stunner(loved the gown that Lawrence wore to the Oscars) not to mention a very fine actress.
March 29th, 2011 at 2:32 pm
livingtribunal: But, Jennifer Lawrence is not an unknown(Oscar Nominee)I mean, she just landed the part of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games.
March 29th, 2011 at 3:41 pm
Now THIS movie is going to be awful.
March 29th, 2011 at 8:37 pm
jm, I stand corrected about her being an unknown, just unknown to me! Perhaps it’s just not a great picture of her on the cover of the magazine!
March 30th, 2011 at 12:16 am
Why is Magneto trying to grab Azazel’s crotch?
March 30th, 2011 at 2:05 am
One word describes every superhero film coming out that I’ve seen previews of…..Schumacher.
March 30th, 2011 at 2:21 am
A must to avoid!
March 30th, 2011 at 10:36 am
The Emma and Mystique looks are targeted to tweens (Hanna Mystique) and they just look like bad Halloween costumes
March 30th, 2011 at 1:00 pm
Yeah I really don’t care for the look of Emma or Mystique. Mystique’s face looks really bloated to me. Maybe it is the angle and the makeup but does not look good at all. I do think Beast looks pretty good. All that being said I will see this movie but I do not have high hopes for it. I think it is going to be a disaster.
March 30th, 2011 at 4:21 pm
Emma Frost..YUCK…Implants? Not…
Might as well have had Nicole Kidman the way January looks.
This will be a hit like it or not.
Mainstream audiences love muties.
