I love your "Agent of S.T.Y.L.E" blog!!
But I can rarely see the pictures at most entries.
For example in the Black Canary-thread the pictures disappeared from "Fun Alternates" on.
Is there any solution about this problem?

Excellent piece Alan, but all the discussion of practicalities and streetwalkers might as well be delivered by Miss Othmar - nothing looks as great as the classic ... just look at it there, as drawn by Alan Davis and Brian Bolland. The others just don't look like Black Canary, they're Generic Judo Jenny.

I suppose the hooker thing never crosses my mind, as I came across original Dinah as a young boy, years before I heard of prostitutes.

Since I didn't read much classic DC, I was thinking fishnets were introduced after JLI. And don't worry, Alan, I'm sure the whippersnappers know The Warriors from that Xbox game.

Was anyone else thinking Kill Bill when Black Canary broke that guy's knee in the snow?

@RIchard: Silly as it was, to be fair, it wasn't so much the cries of Christians everywhere as it was one group (the UK's Christian Voice) that got offended (almost certainly having no knowledge of the comic book character of whom this Barbie was supposed to represent).

It wouldn't have even been a story if the British tabloid THE SUN hadn't reported on it or if major news outlets and blogs hadn't picked it up from them.

I've never seen that 'Warriors' look. In which titles did she sport that? And, for the love of God, why?

Harlock - so her actual outfit displayed all that cleavage? There's nothing holding the poor girl inside! I'm sensing flying boobies every time she tried to throw a punch... Fine for heterosexual fan boys but completely impractical.

Remember the Black Canary Barbie Doll that was based on her current BOP outfit, and the ridiculous outrage from fundamentalist Christians? It was silly considering that Wonder Woman or Ariel the Mermaid wore much less clothing.

KRISTEN: It definitely comes off as much cooler to me if you can wear functional gear and still make it sexy.

I really like the analysis of the evolution in Black Canary's costuming. I personally find the flat, functional boots, and the padded outfits, not only more appropriate, but more attractive, and more logical in-universe.

DCWOMENKICKINGASS: Yeah, as fun as it is, I just can't get fully behind it. Sometimes less is more.

NIJROSE: I think that's a completely valid view. I like it but for these columns I try to also be a bit more objective and ask "does it make sense?" whether I like it or not. And I can see two arguments to that question.

The thing is, the original costume just WORKED - overly sexualised or not, it had a certain showy, swashbuckling look that fit the times it was created for. Even now, you could argue the perfect strategy for distracting a male assailant is a little bit of cleavage and leg while you're kicking his ass. It shows no more than Wonder Woman's classic costume and is arguably more practical.

Today's Canary would wear a costume similar to Mom's, as a tribute - it just makes sense to me.

The current costume, with the yellow on the boots and the zip up top, was designed by Amanda Conner. It made its debut in issue #47 of BoP (despite the unitard costume on the cover). It is also the costume that Mattel used when they issued their Black Canary Barbie.

And I agree with you on the wedding dress. I'm doing a round up of Comic Wedding dresses over at DCWKA and the review team wasn't impressed.

I loved her with the short blonde hair, but the current look with the long coat is also great. Also, Gail Simone (who used to work as a hairdresser) had Ed Benes give Dinah a proper haircut (something that happened on-panel during their BoP run). The haircut gives Dinah a distinctive look even when she's in civilian clothing.

Wow, you really glossed over the Mike Grell-era look. And comparing it to 90s excesses? Based on ONE cover image?

Hardly fair, I'd say.

Anyway, take a look at that cover again, removing all straps, bandoliers, ammo, and weaponry from Dinah's outfit. Why? Because that's how it normally appeared.

Yeah, it's a slick look. And one of my favorites.

Great piece, Alan! I want to add, though, that the long cloak she's been sporting has been something she's worn off and on since Gail Simone originally took over the book in 2003. It's not exactly a new addition. :)

I've never been able to explain this character's outfit to any non-comic reader. They just look at her as just prostitute with superpowers. Of course that's not true. But seriously can you honestly explain her wardrobe in the most rational way? I am not a prude, I don't have a problem with her outfit, but I don't think it fits the character or the book she's in.

Great article, as always. I was really struck by how relatively few costumes that BC's had over the sixty plus years she's been around. Especially one who's had a high profile in the DC universe, more or less, that entire time.

I had been hoping, once I started reading this post, that you'd use some shots of her from that Alex Toth story from the seventies, but that's just me wanting to see some glorious Toth work. :-)

I'm looking forward to next week's already. Thanks again.
