It’s official. Kevin Costner is playing Superman’s dad in the Zack Snyder directed film.
It had been rumored for some time that the Man of Steel crew were hoping to secure Costner for the role but they’ve finally done it. The Hollywood Reporter says the actor closed the deal with Warner Bros. and Legendary pictures to play Superman’s adoptive father Jonathan Kent.
Costner joins Henry Cavill playing Clark Kent/Superman and Diane Lane, who was recently announced as playing his on-screen wife, Martha. “Whether Costner will have an on-screen death is being kept very tightly under the cape by Warner Bros. and producers Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder,” says THR.
What’s your opinion on the casting? I think Costner and Lane will make a great married couple. My hope is the don’t follow tradition and kill Pa off so soon.

Not a bad casting choice. Though I haven’t seen Costner in anything in ages. He certainly isn’t nearly as bad an actor as his worst critics say, though. He can be great. And he’s better than John Schneider, who was pretty good.
Funny that for Pa they hire an older man and for Ma they hire a woman ten years younger. Typical Hollywood sexist-ageism.

Agreed on the ageism, and the idea of Ma Kent as a MILF (forgive me) just seems crazy. Susan Sarandon would’ve been awesome. Patricia Clarkson, too, and she and Costner played spouses in the Untouchables (maybe that’d be distracting). Lots of great AGE-APPROPRIATE actresses who could play maternal/tough. Frances McDormand.

I hope that the Lois Lane choice is as awesome as the Superman, Martha and Jonathan Kent ones!

MILF??? Give me a break. Diane Lane is 46 year old. Is she still attractive? Sure. But I seriously doubt Ma Kent will be wearing skimpy outfits and tons of makeup. Nolan knows what he’s doing. Lane is a great actress who has a look that can match Martha. Same with Costner. They look good together, and he’s still a big name.
Could they have found someone who was also 46 to be Pa Kent? Probably. But I don’t think that’s how good film companies work. “What two people can we hire for this onscreen couple that are good actors, big names to draw in audiences, and also THE SAME AGE????” Please. If Ma Kent was 35 or if Pa Kent was 65, then we could all be angry together. But that’s not the case. So get over it.

I’m 45 and I’d be happy to have Kevin Costner fixing the family truck.

Great choice for Jonathan Kent. I too hope they dont kill off Pa Kent too soon.

I know I’d rail the shit outta Diane Lane, but never would I have expected to say the same of Ma Kent hahah

Looks like they’re following the Batman Begins pattern of casting ‘name’ actors into the supporting roles. Sure, Costner doesn’t come close to Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman or Liam Neeson but it’s a good start.

Good pick up for the movie. Once this one hits the theaters the Batman/Superman, or Justice League rumors will really fly then.

Great casting! I’ve always enjoyed Kevin Costner in all of his films, and the lucky SOB even got to date Joan Lunden, former host of Good Morning America (who I had a crush on in my youth).
But seriously, he is just perfect for the role and you could see why he would be such a huge, positive influence on a young Clark Kent. The casting of Diane Lane as Martha Kent is excellent as well!
I hope that the Kent farm will have a baseball field so father and son can play catch.
