I always enjoy these pieces. Thanks a lot.

Seeing Falcon here ... I'm trying to remember if you've done Hawkman yet? With Hawkman, there doesn't seem to be a lot to talk about, but I never would have suspected that the Falcon would have had these many costume changes either.

JASON ATOMIC: Well, like I said at the beginning, we focused on mainstream realities. And you're right, there definitely is more to Vision than meets the eye, it's just more subtle in the same way the Fantastic Four costumes change very slightly over the years.

CHAEL: Since it seems vibranium is done with all over the world, I'd have to say that Falcon is doing without as well.

It's like someone was reading my mind. After the latest issue of Heroes for Hire, I was thinking Falcon needed an Agent of S.T.Y.L.E. article. I wasn't happy with the return of Falcon's traditional wings and the loss of his claw, once again. Within Captain America, we finally got a look that was more practical and encompassed all the looks he had in the past and brought back his former tools along with the ease of going from street or air combat. Losing the hard light wings Black Panther gave him alone seems like such a downgrade. Does this mean his vibranium weave suit is gone as well? We need to bring these back along with his talon grappling line. It makes him a much more useful and dynamic character to draw and write.

I was just reading Essential Captain America & thinking to myself "I never realised the Falcon changed costume so often".
Kinda thought the stylistic recycling of his earliest costume by the Ladyhawks in Spider-Girl & Rick Jones' appropriation of his 'chicken foot' boots in Hulk: Future Imperfect might have been worth a mention too;)

re: Vision he only had a few basic looks but even then there were variations, the 'normal citizen' hologram look in the Perez/Busiek days, the 'nude' honeymoon version etc...
then there's the golden age Vision & the recent Iron Lad connection.
If that's still not enough you could always double him up with Wonderman seeing as how they are 'related'

That's true, the only black character I can think of off hand who's fully covered is The Prowler.
Perhaps an article on the Titans. There may be more variations than I can remember but I don't think they've had more than three variations. I'm thinking the New Teen Titans line up minus Wally. Yay golden Cyborg, hey! When he was gold he technically wasn't showing any skin.

Notice how whenever a character is black, and it doesn't say so in the codename (such as Black Panther or Black Lightning), they usually try to find some way to show more of his or her skin in the costume (such as Falcon, Luke Cage, and Goliath . . . all with sleeveless costumes. Heck, Luke Cage is too street to even have a costume!). Night Thrasher is like the only exemption. This trend has always bothered me. Can't we just give them costumes like we would any other white character?

Great article, hated that old Avengers cartoon. The new one on Disney XD is doing a way better job than the 90s one ever did. I think Scott Summers or maybe even the different looks of the X-Men as a team would be great for a future installment. Although the latter might be too much. Maybe the Superman family like Superboy, Supergirl and Power Girl?

I'd think it would be fun to do a 90s article where you can spotlight the worst and best (or at least not so bad) costume redesigns from that decade.

Falcon - yay! I actually suggested Falcon some time ago so thanks for the rundown! I can't help but love the "classic" look since that's when I came to know the character, but it's way goofy. I like the idea of updating the classic, (the "neo-classic" is my second fav - especially when drawn by Coipel) and the current one is really good but I feel the red slashes on the gloves are too busy and maybe the red on his chest should be streamlined to just be a "V".

I'll second the suggestion for Rogue.

Fab piece, I'm with Mike, bugger 'practicality', just give us a fun look. And if that includes a nice bare chest, so much the better - equal ops and all that. My favourite is the classic red and white, but I like the 'Parrot' look too - so of its time, and in unusual colourways.

"The color combination is also bizarre. Green and orange? Really? Are you the Falcon or the Parrot?"

One of the best and funniest lines, in an article full of them. Always look forward to your column. Good stuff!

Great piece Alan. Never notice the Falcon/Stingray similarity before...

Falcon strikes me as a hero that's never had just one, perfect, great costume. Not complaining about any look that shows off some skin though. Brother is hot.

Great article! I love The Falcon. He's probably my favorite Marvel non flagship character.

How about a Guardians Of The Galaxy article? (I'm talking classic Guardians.) There's some ridiculous and awesome costumes of future versions of Marvel heroes mixed into the series. I loved the Major Victory look of Vance Atrovik when I was 11! It shames me to admit that now ;)

Hey Alan. I would love for you to give some attention to Vindicator/Guardian. Alpha Flight needs a spotlight and there were a few variations of the suits between Mac and Heather in color and facemask variations.

ALBERT: You should've added "and you're pretty lame for not knowing that. Feel bad." before you walked away. Little humiliation is good for a child's development.

DOCKNOCK: Fine suggestions. Hadn't considered Riddler or Toyman. Vision I've thought about, as I enjoy his character very much, but he has only four looks off the top of my head. Still, I'll research and see if I can't make a decent-sized column out of him.

CISCO KID: HA! Well done, sir.

JOE FRIDAY: Black Canary could be fun. Zatanna could be harder. She's basically had three costumes. Then again, maybe there are some variations I've forgotten. Research will be done to figure this out.

DOCKNOCK: Fine suggestions. Hadn’t considered Riddler or Toyman. Vision I’ve thought about, as I enjoy his character very much, but he has only four looks off the top of my head. Still, I’ll research and see if I can’t make a decent-sized column out of him.

CISCO KID: HA! Well done, sir.

How about Steel at DC? He has had quite a few different variations in a short span of time. Classic with S, the black and silver in DC and subsequent sentient monster armor, modified S in the Jersey City era, wacky open face helmet when he returned to Metropolis, god awful Aegis armor, and inexplicable return to classic S armor in between Infinite Crisis and 52.

Actually, I think I just wrote the article. :-D

Why not consider some of the costume changes of some more of the villians? I know you have done Brainiac and Catwoman, but what about Riddler and Toy Man? I also think that some of the other avengers such as Vision, Beast and Wonder Man would provide good fodder for your series.

One time I was at Target and a little kid picked up the Falcon "Famous Covers" doll and asked his mother "who's this guy?" I told them, "That's the Falcon. He's one of Captain America's partners" and walked away. Good times.

Dear Alan,

My suggestion: Phoenix. Both Jean Grey and Rachel Summers have sported a bevy of costumes over the years. Perhaps a multi-part segment could include Madelyne Pryor, as well? ; )

Best Regards,

So, so tired of this "body armor is practical!" nonsense

As if, every superhero costume was stupid before Christopher Nolan came along and made it all alright.

I just came from a week at the NFL combine. Guess what all these people who make their professional living using their bodies wear? Granted, nobody's shooting bullets at professional football players, but comic book heroes have to move, first and foremost. The art depends on their bodies posed in the most outrageous positions. Bulky body armor and padding? Um, no. Training and fantasy abilities? Yes.

Huh, had no idea Falcon had this many variations of his costume... strange that it took so long to get it just right?

Anyways, Alan, it's ROGUE of the X-mens 30th Anniversary this year! =) Wouldn't it be neat to do a special on her MANY, many costumes ( as is the case when you're in the X-men) in celebration, aye?

Great read!

I would love to see Hawkman and Hawkwoman/Hawkgirl.

The thing I don't care for on the current Falcon costume is the neck area that's red and spikey--it looks clownish. If that could be streamlined, then this look would work well.

The_Qu: A few days before he died, Dwayne McDuffie and I were talking about black superheroes we wanted to see get their own movies and titles again. The Falcon came up. With that, his new role in HEROES FOR HIRE, and his one-shot that came out this week, it seemed an appropriate choice.

Juss: Glad I could help out! :-)
