Well, if there was any doubt after the tiny flash of the Red Skull in the Captain America: The First Avenger teaser, this should erase it for everyone. Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we have the first full shot of Hugo Weaving as the maniacal Nazi villain from the film (Yes, folks, while he’s wearing a Hydra belt/armband, he is also a Nazi, will be seen with Nazis, and called Nazis, as confirmed to Newsarama by official tie-in comic book writer Fred Van Lente), and it is just spectacularly creepy. Hopefully we’ll get something in motion soon in the form of another trailer. The above link also has an interview with Director Joe Johnston, but who needs words with a picture like that?

cool, but looks like a toy to me.
March 3rd, 2011 at 1:06 pm
Now if only he was allowed to be shown wearing a Swastika instead of a Hydra emblem…
March 3rd, 2011 at 1:07 pm
Much better then I thought it would look. I always thought the Red Skull’s make up job should be similar to Two-Face’s from the Dark Knight.
March 3rd, 2011 at 1:16 pm
and where are the nazis swastikas in the uniform????
March 3rd, 2011 at 1:25 pm
honestly, (and it doesn’t really matter), but it doesn’t look that much better, or even different, than the 1990 movie.
March 3rd, 2011 at 1:26 pm
I think, because it’s a fantasy film, not a proper WWII pic, that there’s some kind of moratorium on the use of Nazi symbols.
March 3rd, 2011 at 1:31 pm
They’ve gone over this many times in regards to the Nazi stuff. They can’t sell toys with that symbol so are using the Hydra symbol on the characters and vehicles etc. I have a friend who is working on the film and he says that there are Nazis in the film, they call them Nazis in the film and you see swastikas in the film.
Marvel just doesn’t want to mass market toys with swastikas on them.
March 3rd, 2011 at 1:32 pm
The Skull looks great! I like his look better than Caps in the movie.
March 3rd, 2011 at 1:43 pm
Where’s the spectacularly creepy one?
March 3rd, 2011 at 1:47 pm
makes a lot of sense cant have toys with swastikas on them
March 3rd, 2011 at 1:58 pm
It *does* make sense that no one wants to market toys with swastikas. But I hate it,hate it, that swastikas can’t appear in their proper place and context in the **film!**. And who says the marketed toys can’t differ from the film, anyway?! I miss the days when attendance, not marketing, drove the movie industry.
March 3rd, 2011 at 2:09 pm
I think people are making a big deal out of the wrong things. Everything I’ve heard says that the Skull starts out as a Nazi and breaks away to form Hydra. So a big plot point of the movie would be the formation of Hydra…which means this makes perfect sense within the context of the story. I see no problem here.
March 3rd, 2011 at 2:20 pm
I want that jacket
March 3rd, 2011 at 2:21 pm
I have to agree with mostly everyone, I’m loving it.
March 3rd, 2011 at 2:44 pm
Looks great.
March 3rd, 2011 at 3:52 pm
I’ve only now realized that Hugo Weaving looks quite a bit like Nick Cave.
March 3rd, 2011 at 4:07 pm
Whose to say this imagine isn’t from later in the film after he joins/creates Hydra? We don’t know for certain that he isn’t wearing swastikas originally.
March 3rd, 2011 at 4:40 pm
All I need now is to hear Hugo Weaver talk looking like that and I’m done.
March 3rd, 2011 at 4:55 pm
I hope this version is Italian too… just like the 1990′s masterpiece!
March 3rd, 2011 at 6:33 pm
Some people just like to complain. That pic looks freakin sweet & I can not wait for the movie!
March 3rd, 2011 at 7:25 pm
Thank god no red nipples
March 3rd, 2011 at 8:39 pm
Damn, it is the same as the cartoon No NAZIS! then thats NOT captain America, I really hope the comics to not retcon the NAzis.
March 3rd, 2011 at 8:45 pm
That uniform is freakin’ sweet!! looks really good.
Peace
March 3rd, 2011 at 9:41 pm
And yes, Red Skull looks great. Even though I wouldn’t say I’m a hardcore Cap fan, I will still watch the movie and hope it is good.

Agreed. Besides, Nazis ARE going to be in the movie and very much so, according to the movie’s director Joe Johnston. It’s just that the Nazi are one thing, but Hydra is an even greater evil than even they within the context of this movie. So much so that they must be stopped.
March 3rd, 2011 at 9:46 pm
P.S. Hell, I figured most I’d see the fanboys ranting on were the frickin’ ears on Red Skull! LOL!
This pic looks cool. Can’t wait!
March 3rd, 2011 at 9:50 pm
Exactly what I wanted.
March 3rd, 2011 at 9:58 pm
Darth Beavis please step away from the keyboard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 3rd, 2011 at 9:58 pm
The pic loooks great can’t wait for the film!
March 3rd, 2011 at 10:01 pm
LoooL @ Ryan K. Best advice you’re gonna get, Darth Beavis.
March 3rd, 2011 at 10:31 pm
looks sick and I bet it looks better on film.
March 3rd, 2011 at 11:15 pm
The red skull is perfect. Absolutely perfect. In the darker moody lighting in the movie he’ll be so creepy. Can’t wait for Mr. Weaving to speak…
March 3rd, 2011 at 11:24 pm
Sick! Wicked! Jack (Kirby of course) would be proud.
March 3rd, 2011 at 11:54 pm
I’m sold! They’ll likely explain Hydra as a special branch of the Nazi party.
March 4th, 2011 at 12:53 am
I like how even through the makeup you can tell it’s Hugo. I’m stoked for this movie. Set up to fail but turning my previous expectations on their ear!
March 4th, 2011 at 1:02 am
1) the ears do look alittle rough, but its Hugo Weaving, and he is gonna kill it!! 2) T.K. Mazin and Ryan K…plz stop feeding the trolls, they will follow u home. you played right into what Darth Beavis wanted. Act like you have been on a message board before. 3) why are people complaining about there being no Nazis? There are gonna be LOTS of Nazis. This movie is gonna be good. I cant wait.

Dangersmith Said:
“Sick! Wicked! Jack (Kirby of course) would be proud.” Don’t you mean Jack Kirby would be poor?! I guess work for hire is better than no work at all! G-d ble$$ you, Marvel!
March 4th, 2011 at 8:21 am
Wow…looking at the comments one could conclude that Comic Book fans are morons who don’t know how to read. Which is kind of silly becuause y’know reading, comics. I guess they all missed this line? “(Yes, folks, while he’s wearing a Hydra belt/armband, he is also a Nazi, will be seen with Nazis, and called Nazis, as confirmed to Newsarama by official tie-in comic book writer Fred Van Lente)”. Why do I even bother?
March 4th, 2011 at 9:35 am
If I’m not mistaken, the origin of the Marvel Comics Hydra, is that it was formed by former Nazi Baron Strucker. It was a way for Stan & Jack to utilize the villainous Nazi’s in their 1960′s comic stories.
So the movie is only replacing one Nazi (Strucker) with another (Skull) and will allow Cap to have a villainous organization in the present day when he awakens from his frozen state.
March 4th, 2011 at 5:08 pm
His costume looks impressive, but it seems to be very complicated to put it on, no wonder that Herr Schmidt has a grumpy face and an obviousley dark mood.
March 4th, 2011 at 8:42 pm
@kolbey: While I take note of what you say, that’s really not the point. I don’t think he said it to get a reaction, he said it because he can… behind the safety of his computer. He’s said similar comments in the past. So I stand by my reaction even though my post’s been deleted. Nuff said.
March 6th, 2011 at 2:18 pm
O_O
Now THAT is how the Red Skull is supposed to look like! I am officially impressed.
Now all I ask is a decent clip of Hugo Weaving doing the accent. He can pull off Elrond, he can pull off Agent Smith, let’s see (or, in this case, HEAR) him pull off Johann Schmidt.
March 6th, 2011 at 7:07 pm
Why do movie costume makers always forget to make the costumes look worn? Where is the wear on this uniform? I realize Hugo Weaving is wearing this leather outfit for the first time, but the Red Skull isn’t.
Just a pet peeve of mine that often takes me out of a movie. That, and lightning/thunder coinciding like sound travels as fast as light.
March 7th, 2011 at 2:16 pm
Well now can we all at least say….DAMN that looks good. Bitch all you want, THAT is the Red Skull, or Dell Rusk if you rather. Looking forward to this now even more!!!
March 9th, 2011 at 12:42 am
The skull looks dangerous.. but at the same time it looks very innovative also. The developer has done a great job…
