Hi Alan! Loved the article! Kinda new to the whole "comic book"-thing, but the Flash quickly became my personal favorite. Quick question though: The last pic on Bart, with Jay and Max, which issue/collection is it from? The save-file says "Rebirth", but I've been looking through my HC 15 times and can't find it there! Nor is it in the HC of "Dastardly Death of the Rogues"! Please answer this, because I can't stop obsessing over where I could find that picture!

Many thanks from Sweden!

One omission is the future Bart Allen flash from Teen Titans 17-19 and 50-54. Even though its simply the McKone Kid flash costume with a full cap, I think its an interesting variant (as is Bart's Speed Stealing Power)

Love these features, sir. I've been eagerly awaiting a Flash themed feature for a while and you've graciously given us three! It's been said before obviously, but while I am a fan of the Kid Flash costume ( I too prefer the white circle, it ties to The Flash better I think), I've always found it curious/creepy KF matches the Reverse Flash so much!

Notice that KC Kid Flash's lightning-bolt "seam" is actually two symbols--the double-kink and single-kink lightning-bolts of regular Kid Flash.

You talk a lot about how costumes should make sense for the character and how they operate. The extra padding on Wally's costume in Young Justice makes perfect sense. He has less control than Barry, is often seen crashing or falling, and uses his speed to turn himself into a battering ram. With all that in mind, it makes perfect sense he'd have extra padding to protect him.

ERIC NIXON: Right, I get the idea behind it, I'm just not a fan cuz it now implies the speedster is carrying extra weight. And since he has accelerated healing and his bio-chemical aura protects him from basic injuries, it seems not all that necessary.

DAN: Right, I was trying to imply that this is a common but not true belief, hence why I kept using phrasing such as "you'd think." Sorry I wasn't more clear. As for the colors, Kid Flash appeared in his second costume about four months before Reverse-Flash first appeared, so it wasn't an issue. Also, the open face and the chest symbol not having the black circle keep him from looking too much like Zoom, especially now that Zoom also reverses his logo.

I agree with your comment in this particular case but generally speaking this comment isn't accurate:

"You know, you’d think that a cartoon would have no reason to screw up a hero’s costume. We understand that what looks good on a comic page may not look good (or be possible) in a live-action medium. But with cartoons, you figure it should be a seamless transition."

In traditional animation costumes have generally gotten simplified because of the difficulty in depicting them at odd angles, getting them drawn repeatedly and efficiently, etc. Even the recent WB series (Batman of various flavors in the last 10-15 years, JLU, etc.) are good examples of this simplification process.

The extra padding on Wally's Young Justice costume bothers me a bit, too. Apparently, the creators stated that the design's due to the way Wally uses his speed in combat: it's supposed to reflect a more "human-cannonball" kind of strategy.

Sadly, the character had a more simplified costume in the pilot episode which looked fine; it'd have been nice if they stuck with that one. I've begrudgingly let it go, though, since the padding isn't 'too' severe a la Cable.

Hey Alan,
I'm a big fan of these features, keep up the good work. But I did notice, in the intro: "Soon before he married his fiancee Iris West" - that's some awkward language.

"And with the padding and seams on Wally, this almost looks like body armor a motorcyclist would wear."

I think that works really well, especially on a character who is so fast. His costume has padding for the same a reason a motorcycle rider would.

I'm not sure I would count that last Bart Allen costume as official. It seems to have only appeared in last year's Flash Secret Files and Bart's appearances after that have ignored the change. I wonder why Scott Kollins drew the costume like that.
