And the latest bit of casting news from the Zack Snyder-directed Superman reboot: Deadline is reporting that there’s “heightened interest” in casting Kevin Costner in the film. Exactly what role — or what constitutes “heightened interest” — is unknown. Some are speculating Lex Luthor, but there’s no doubt that films like Field of Dreams have established Kevin Costner as firmly in the Jonathan Kent mold.
Feel free to speculate amongst yourselves. The film, scheduled for December 2012, stars Henry Cavill as Superman.

Geez….guy’s a horribly stiff actor. And really…do we really need to revisit the Kents in a Superman movie? How about moving beyond the mommy-daddy issues and just serving us up a straight-up action/adventure movie? Donner did the soft-focus wheat fields perfectly….anything else is just vanity (like Singer’s effort to literally duplicate the Kent farm from the Donner Superman movie).

I was thinking Jor-el. It wouldn’t be a Superman movie without the obligatory cameo/voice over from Supe’s “other Dad.”

What “mommy-daddy issues” do you think Superman has? Or do you have him confused with Batman and/or Spider-man (who chose his ancient aunt over his wife)?
I’m pretty sure Supes (a well-adjusted married man) still visits his mother on a semi-regular basis.

Jor-El or Pa Kent.

Parasite! i know it isnt even a possibility that Kev would be cast as a villain…but c’mon, Parasite! he already sucks the energy out of the room…he may as well drain powers too.

I can’t believe all of this Costner hate! The man was in Waterworld! WATERWORLD!!

Who loves orange soda?

Waterworld was a dream come true wrapped in a wrapped in a fish taco.

I’m thinking a a certain editor-in-chief who occasionally spouts “Great Caesar’s Ghost!”

Pleases let him be Pa Kent.

Pa Kent or Perry White.

Costner was good early on, and maybe enough time not being a “big star” has him back in the mind set of an actual actor. As to who he plays, I can’t see him being Luthor. I guess I’d rather see him as Perry White than Pa Kent, but I’m hoping for a different character entirely.
If there were rumors of a major female part that was not Lois Lane, maybe Lana Lang and her dad are going to show up in the new movie.

Oh God I hope he’s not Lois.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:37 am
He’d be fine as Pa Kent. Don’t see him as Perry White.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:41 am
Why not Lois! all the actresses that have played her in the past have all SUCKED!!
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:44 am
But I digress…he could play a good Jor-El for the 21st Century. Just don’t give him too many lines or I’ll get bored.

I hear Superman is walking across America throughout the whole movie. I bet he’s playing a motorist with a flat tire with no jack, until Superman walks by and saves the day.

I can totally see Costner as Pa Kent.
Yeah, he’s had some long rocky patches since his great days in Silverado, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Tin Cup, Untouchables, DwWolves, JFK, Thirteen Days, and A Perfect World. But a) that’s a pretty great list, and b) he was rock-solid in Open Range. I don’t think that Waterworld, The Postman, and the incredible disappearing accent in Robin Hood (which was actually a HUGE hit) should undermind everything else.
February 22nd, 2011 at 5:53 pm
Oh, and one more thing . . . Pa Kent does not guarantee origin story or even flashback. Pa was alive during Superman’s adventuring career for many, many years post-Crisis.
February 22nd, 2011 at 7:12 pm
Oh well… I had high hopes for this movie but if Costner is involved it willl be a dud – that’s HIS super power.
February 22nd, 2011 at 8:02 pm
That’s our Aquaman!
Okay, how about Titanno the Super-Ape? Mr. Mxtya-something? Bizarro Jimmy Olsen? Or Superman’s gay friend, Pete Ross?

GREAT CEASAR’S GHOST! Was my first impression at least.
February 22nd, 2011 at 9:48 pm
If not Luthor or Pa Kent, I’d guess Jor El or maybe even Brainiac, or any other non-physical villain.
He’d make a good Terra Man.
Just sayin’.

Just read above posts – Perry White could be it, too.
