When we last talked to Jim McCann, he advised that he couldn’t talk in too much detail about Hawkeye: Blindspot, the four-issue miniseries he’s writing that’s starting later this month, because it would spoil the happenings of Widowmaker #4. That comic came out today, and McCann opened up about the upcoming story’s hook in a USA Today article. Spoilers after the jump, yup.
Turns out “Hawkeye: Blindspot” title is actually much more literal than you might have guessed.
That’s right: Clint Barton, the superpowerless archer of the Avengers, is going blind, thanks to a blow to the head received in Widowmaker #4. The article discloses that Steve Rogers, Tony Stark and Hank Pym will help out Hawkeye with a helmet that helps to improve his worsening vision, and that the series will feature both Baron Zemo — who Hawkeye has plenty of history with, especially since Clint replaced him as the leader of the Thunderbolts — and a mystery new villain.
In an interview with Newsarama, McCann stated the Blindspot is a “turning point for Hawkeye, and “this is actually the Hawkeye story I’ve wanted to tell.” The first issue of Hawkeye: Blindspot is scheduled for Feb. 16.

‘Turns out “Hawkeye: Blindspot” title is actually much more literal than you might have guessed.’
I wouldn’t say that, I dropped Widowmaker after #1 when the title of the follow-up was announced on the assumption that Clint was losing his sight soon. I can’t imagine anyone didn’t make the same assumption.
Poor old Hawkeye, first he goes deaf, now he’s blind. WATCH YER NOSE, CLINT!

Ha, well, I think it was just as easy to assume that “Blindspot” was a metaphorical thing. (Which it still might be as well, I suppose…)

It’s a problem Albert – I have no poetry in my soul!
Anyway, nice piece

There should have also a Marvel’s latest stupid idea alert. I don’t get why anyone at marvel this would be a good idea. Oh wait 90% have forgotten what a good idea is.

I wonder if they’ll bring up that Hawkeye is also deaf, or does multiple redirections fix all that?
February 10th, 2011 at 8:40 am
I believe the deafness was cured when Wanda brought him back to life. I don’t remember if/where that was explicitly stated anywhere, but I seem to recall this…

If anyone has read the last Avengers Story or Old Man Logan it is established that Hawkeye has no sight in the future of the Marvel U. So this is really ok by me. Zen archer Hawkeye.

Hawkeye is getting a helmet to help his ailing vision? Y’know. Between Reed Richards,Hank Pym and Beast i find it hard to believe that they haven’t found a way to regenerate optic nerves. Hell, we can almost do this now. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/6235.php
Y’know, with all the super geniuses in the Marvel U (DC too) the worlds seems only to excel in destructive science and weapons. Really doesn’t make sense especially with the friends and resources Clint has available. Suspension of belief? How can I with all the miraculous things we’ve seen done by these heroes?
February 10th, 2011 at 1:21 pm
I’m with DaVeO. Makes about as much sense as Karma from the New Mutants going around with a robot donosaur leg instead of asking Forge for help.
Isn’t Misty Knight bionic too? What is going on in 616? Red Arrow loses an arm in DC and Marvel had nothing better to do with Clint so they had to pull a Necrosis-style rip-off??
February 10th, 2011 at 1:23 pm
I think Kurt Busiek was the one to retcon the deafness with the Heroes Return status quo.

Hell, with all these MU super geniuses developing heat-seeking/laser-guided/DNA tracking weapons, why would need an ARCHER at all ? LOL

When asked for comment on this new development, Daredevil’s response was, “And?”
(I like the Zen archer idea, too.)

That Deaf Dumb and Blind superhero…sure plays a mean pin-ball!
February 10th, 2011 at 4:46 pm
Isn’t it inspirational how Hawkeye will go through life blind, deaf and retarted at the same time, like Ann Frank?
February 10th, 2011 at 5:22 pm
Sorry, don’t usually respond when people write something stupid online, but…
1. If you are going to be so pathetic as to make a joke about someone being retarded, spell it right. That way, you will not seem… well, “retarted.”
2. What does “retarted” mean anyway? Is that when someone regains their former sassiness?
3. Do you know who Anne Frank is? Did you mean Anne Sullivan, who worked with Helen Keller?
4. If you don’t think Hawkeye losing his vision is a good idea, become a professional writer, pitch an idea to Marvel, and get it published. Until then, be quiet.

Saint Moe FTW!!!!!!
HILARIOUS!
Ann Frank. LOL
February 10th, 2011 at 8:38 pm
Yeah, Hawkeye regained his hearing when he returned Heroes Reborn universe. This was covered in an Avengers annual. Franklin Richards returned the heroes to their “ideal state”. The same explanation holds for why Tony Stark didn’t return as teen Tony.

Joke flew straight over Saint Moe’s head.
