“Avenge”
Today, the Captain America: The First Avenger poster splashed onto the internet, showcasing Chris Evan’s more serious side. We get a great look at the shield and costume, sans mask, and what looks like a battlefield atmosphere. I’m sure some non-believers are having a change of heart after seeing this.
The more I see of this movie, the more anticipation builds. It’s going to be a damn good Summer.
What do you think, readers?

February 4th, 2011 at 12:56 pm
Cannot wait. Everything I see for this movie makes me more excited. I think Evans is going to surprise us all.
February 4th, 2011 at 1:31 pm
Absolutely BAD ASS!!
February 4th, 2011 at 1:31 pm
I know you can’t judge a movie by its poster, but wow, that is pretty good.
February 4th, 2011 at 1:35 pm
OUR HEROES ARE SO GRITTY!
*farts*
February 4th, 2011 at 2:03 pm
Doesnt Cap wear a mask? Oh thats right- hes “humiliated” to wear his costume, according to the the people producing the film- oh, its Marvel themselves! yeah go maskless. we dont want people thinking this is a comic book movie about a super-hero. we want the MAINSTREAM to ACCEPT us! idiots. so happy the comics industry is collapsing due to your supporting the constant horrible, insecure decisions.
February 4th, 2011 at 2:11 pm
Ummmm, he needs his mask on. The poster doesn’t even say Cap America on it? How are people going to even know that is Captain America?
February 4th, 2011 at 2:20 pm
I agree with MaxL.
Why do the IIC (Idiots In Charge) keep doing stuff like this? Look at the straps on the insides of his biceps. Useless. Window dressing to make the uniform look more “real,” more “tactical,” and less super-hero-shiny. Same thing for the stupid-useless (I’m required by all that’s holy to say that each time I mention this point) straps that form the 2 red stripes on his abdomen–they’re connected with buckles to the straps **sewn into** his shirt!! So what are they (he already HAS a belt, observe)?–a super-duper set of suspenders, to make sure our super soldier’s pants don’t fall down and embarrass us?
I keep telling myself… at least they didn’t mess with the shield…but who knows what they’ll do with it in the movie, with special effects?
And by the way–in re: this conversation, but all others comics-related, also: could we all agree to retire the word or words “badass,” and understand and admit that only someone with the intelligence and lack of mature socialization of a 6-year-old would ever use it?
February 4th, 2011 at 2:21 pm
Most of the Marvel movie posters (with the exception of Iron Man) don’t have the movie’s name on them, they just show “iconic” shots of the main character. The basic idea is, you should already know who this character is. And you know what, most people do.
That being said, the name of the character is in small print under the date.
I think the look of the movie so far is pretty great. We’ll see how it seems with sound come tomorrow night.
February 4th, 2011 at 2:22 pm
@Charlie: Because people… yes, even non-comics fans… know who Captain America is. Not as many people know that he’s Steve Rogers or that he fought in WWII before ice-skating to the present, but if you show a random person off the street a picture of Captain America and asked said random person what superhero it was, they’d almost certainly give a correct answer.
February 4th, 2011 at 2:25 pm
I thought it was odd that he looks like he is puzzled by where he is at with dirt flying around. Eh. Hopefully the movie itself rocks.
February 4th, 2011 at 2:27 pm
Wow! This looks really awesome! As for the gritty look..umm…this World War 2 and Cap is a soldier..so yeah.
February 4th, 2011 at 2:31 pm
I am not crazy about the poster or the costume in the poster.
Still excited for the movie. Just not wowed by it.
February 4th, 2011 at 2:32 pm
Is anyone else having a problem with comics preview pages not showing up? I can’t see squat!
February 4th, 2011 at 3:28 pm
Looks alright. I’ll reservfe judgement until I see the film.
Rob, you’re not alone. I can’t open the preview pages either!
February 4th, 2011 at 3:35 pm
I’ve tried to email the site admin, but I get no confirmation the email ever sent.
February 4th, 2011 at 3:35 pm
The poster’s a success, it’s generating interest.
Who is this?
What’s it about, who needs to “Avenge” what?
And isn’t that the guy who played the Torch?
Its…coming…out.. July, Oh!,it’s Captain America.
Its a teaser image, it’s supposed to be this way.
And @”Juss”, if a six year old is caught using language like “badass”. you wash his mouth out with soap.
Really young man the good captain would not approve.
February 4th, 2011 at 3:38 pm
Talk about the low end of the evolution scale. Check the released images from the movie, he HAS A MASK! WHY THE HELL WOULD THEY NOT HAVE HIM IN A MASK?!? GOD damn, some people are scary stupid.
February 4th, 2011 at 4:02 pm
No one here noticed the homage to Michael Turner’s cover of Civil War #1? Really?
February 4th, 2011 at 4:09 pm
As an Australian who loves Cap as a character. I am very excited about this. The costume looks great and Evans looks awesome as Cap. I can’t wait to see this movie and the poster is bad-ass!
February 4th, 2011 at 4:24 pm
Looks good. Hope the movie will follow the lead.
February 4th, 2011 at 5:08 pm
That poster is PERFECT! I wouldn’t change a thing!
February 4th, 2011 at 5:18 pm
This poster is really great. I agree with some of what people are saying about the uselessness of all the straps, but in the end I really don’t care because it just looks cool. I also understand the move not to put the mask on the poster. They want people to be able to see the star’s face, that’s all. i’m sure he’ll wear it plenty in the film.
The July opening is smart because it’s a patriotic month. They should have moved the date closer to the fourth though.
February 4th, 2011 at 5:28 pm
Duct tape!!!!!
This year’s SCOTT PILGRIM. This movie comes out one week after HARRY POTTER’s finale and only a couple of weeks after what is likely to be another inexplicably huge TRANSFORMERS thing.
Combined with the fatigue that will result when THOR and GREEN LANTERN have both disappointed, all that means CAPTAIN AMERICA will probably be D.O.A.
Nobody outside of your Local Comic Shop has this on their radar.
February 4th, 2011 at 5:31 pm
@Zomburai
Wanna play Man On The Street, do ya?
OK. Take away the shield. Show the exact same image to people on the street and ask them who it is.
They will not have a clue, and you know it.
February 4th, 2011 at 6:21 pm
@Jess: you apparently didn’t get much of an education because that poster is the definition of badass, and I’m more of a DC fan than I am Marvel.
This poster is awesome and I can’t waite to see the movie. Every time I read “Avenge” I feel a tingle going down my spine.
February 4th, 2011 at 8:51 pm
pretty cool: http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/4/68417-11499-101415-1-captain-america_super.jpg
February 4th, 2011 at 9:03 pm
I think the poster is fantastic. I was a sceptic about Evans being Cap at first, but I have been onboard for a while now, and all the pics and information about this movie I have seen has only strengthened my opinion that this will be the best film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet, and this is from a hardcore Iron Man fan. I’ve been excited about this movie since the references to Cap in The Incredible Hulk film back in ’08. Also I know I will be pleased with Thor and Cap, but then again I’m excited about the expansion of the MCU. The Avengers is going to be glorious.
February 4th, 2011 at 10:25 pm
Wow. Its #$#$%ing perfect. As for what isnt and is on the page. All I can say is that the slightest bit of ambiguity draws people in and makes them do the slightest bit of research. Its amazing. I cant beleive im going to live to see the most iconic character ever be brought to the big screen.
February 4th, 2011 at 10:50 pm
Wow this does look pretty cool. On closer inspection however, it does seem kinda funny that he needs those big straps to keep his trousers up! He’s not Iron Man, he’s Captain America – give him some dignity!
February 5th, 2011 at 12:51 am
At least he doesn’t have a couple dozen pouches like Cable…
February 5th, 2011 at 10:18 am
The straps do serve a purpose, the hold his shoulder pads and ammo belt in place (he does have a gun, so he’ll need extra ammo). The strap going across his torso I assume is for his shield. Have you guys actually seen a US serviceman’s uniform?- this really isn’t that far from that.
February 5th, 2011 at 12:49 pm
A lot of movies these days release teaser posters that don’t give the title of the film. That’s why it’s a teaser: they TEASE you about it and then you’re supposed to go find out what it is.
February 5th, 2011 at 1:30 pm
What a great poster. I was worried about this after seeing the devastatingly horrible Captain America movie that came out in 1990 (straight to VHS if I recall) but this looks great. And YES he has a mask, just look a little deeper online and you’ll find the pictures of it. Asa DISH Network Customer/employee I was just using my Logitech Revue with Google TV to watch the Avengers cartoon and then switched over to the Internet to look up info on the movie and came across this site. I’m posting this in front of my 52″ HD TV…beats being in my cramped little office! Anxious to see how Red Skull looks, but Weaving will kill it.
February 5th, 2011 at 4:35 pm
I wasn’t sure they were going to be able to pull this off without it being cheesy, but with the chaos of war around him, he’s looking thoughtfully at the symbol of America and his place as its standard-bearer, with the word “AVENGE” across his chest. Yeah that’s just about right.
February 5th, 2011 at 11:33 pm
This looks epic! Go Cap!
February 6th, 2011 at 1:27 am
I think they’re doing as much as they can to minimize the fact that he’s Captain America to ensure that anti-American sentiments overseas don’t harm film sales. They’ve already said the film will be called “First Avenger” in some foreign markets and it seems like they’re trying to minimize the battle star on his chest and when he actually is wearing the helm, I’ve noticed the “A” is fairly narrow and small. The costume is too anachronistic. It doesn’t look like it’s something they would remotely have in World War Two. Hitch gave them realistic blueprints on more than one occasion: http://www.brokenfrontier.com/userfiles/images/headlines/2009/jul/CaptainAmerica_Reborn_01_SecondPrinting.jpg
and http://cdn.gs.uproxx.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Ultimate-Captain-America.jpg
If he’s sporting a variation of the Present Day Ultimate Cap costume in World War Two, I’m guessing he’ll wear a variation of the Bucky-Cap costume in the Present Day. Ugh.
February 6th, 2011 at 1:53 am
Still doubtful. Just because a poster comes out doesn’t mean the movie’s going to be good, I’ll believe it when I see it.
February 6th, 2011 at 11:27 am
Well, I just showed the poster to my wife, who is not a comic book reader or fan and she knew right away that he was Captain America. Cap’s been around forever – people know who he is.
February 6th, 2011 at 11:29 am
How bad must the studio believe this movie to be if they’ve surrendered the 4th of July weekend to Michael Bay and Transformers 3? No Cap on the 4th of July????
February 6th, 2011 at 11:54 am
@Charlie: It actually says “captainamerica.com” right below 7.2.11
February 6th, 2011 at 5:30 pm
I wonder if the credits will read, “Based on characters created by Stan Lee, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby?!”
February 6th, 2011 at 10:42 pm
Wow. Reading through these comments, my only conclusion is that comic book fans are so effing miserable.
I’ll be there to see it when it comes out and I plan to enjoy it
February 6th, 2011 at 11:07 pm
Great teaser. Marvel knows what they are doing. Great job Marvel.
February 7th, 2011 at 12:29 am
Waaaaaaaaaah, Captain America looks different! Waaaaaaah, straps! Waaaaaahhh waaaaahhhhh effing waaaaaahhhh!
Get the bloody hell over it.
Visually he is distinguishable as Captain America. He’s not wearing black, pink, green or fuchsia. Quit bitching, wait for the movie, then judge it by it’s merit as a film instead of being bitchy about him not wearing spandex and scale-mail while you toss off to your childhood ideologies. I swear, you whiny people make me wish the internet didn’t exist sometimes.
February 8th, 2011 at 11:02 am

February 8th, 2011 at 11:36 am
Its already been said, but how stupid are some of you? Jut about ALL the other pictures that have been released show him with a mask. Stop complaining for complaining’s sake.
February 9th, 2011 at 3:07 pm
Yea. Ok, Im sold.
