More late-breaking news from Deadline: Looks like Joseph Gordon-Levitt is re-teaming with his Inception director Christopher Nolan for an as-yet unknown role in 2012′s The Dark Knight Rises. The post describes the current situation as “in talks,” but seems pretty confident that he’ll be shooting come spring when production on the latest Batman film starts. So the question is, who’s JGL playing? Plenty of fans have fantasy cast him as The Riddler, and he’s got a clear physical resemblance to Heath Ledger — though any sort of Joker re-casting seems to remain thoroughly unlikely.

Riddler! Please God Riddler!

Although I could easily see JGL playing Edward Nigma (Riddler), I have a feeling he’ll be Hugo Strange. All those rumors about Strange awhile ago, along with rumors the movie is being partially based on the “Prey” storyline, make that seem possible.
JGL doesn’t look anything like the Hugo Strange we know from the comics, but that doesn’t mean a thing when it comes to Nolan’s vision for these films. It’s because of that vision that I’m OK with there being (potentially) three villains in this piece.

Dick Grayson: LOL.

For all we know he could be just getting a supporting role as a GCPD detective or something. It’s a waste of time speculating until there’s an official announcement.

If they had only gotten Julia Stiles as Catwoman, then they could have gone for the “10 Reason I Hate You” trifecta.

Remember Anthony Michael Hall’s top secret role in “The Dark Knight?” Or Olivia Munn’s in “Iron Man 2?” I’m going out on a limb and call it: JGL = random newscaster.

mmmmm Dick maybi!

I never thought of it, but JGL would be perfect for an adult Dick Grayson! Of course, that is not happening in this film, but if somewhere down the road there was a “Nightwing” spinoff/movie, he would be awesome in it!

Nolan has already said there will be no Joker, no Riddler and will never do a Robin as long he’s behind the camera…He’s too young to be Hugo Strange. He could be playing a random character maybe with the police or in the mayor’s office
February 2nd, 2011 at 1:14 pm
Here are my guesses. If he’s a villain I’m thinking either Black Mask or Deadshot. If another character, maybe not Dick Grayson, but perhaps Jean Paul Valley/Azrael? A Nolan version of Knightfall? Bane IS in it played by Tom Hardy. Maybe Bane breaks The Batman’s back. Azrael takes over and gets out of hand and far too brutal. The Dark Knight Rises and takes back the mantle?

Hugo Strange would be interesting…and who’s to say in the movie that Hugo has to be an old man. Couldn’t he be a young, media-saavy therapist who knows how to work TV and the web to his advantage?
February 2nd, 2011 at 1:45 pm
I’m assuming Cameo Robin at the end of the movie. It is called Dark Knight Rises after all, so I imagine it to be more uplifting and that he has a developing Bat family.
February 2nd, 2011 at 2:02 pm
Dick Grayson, maybe Mr Freeze?
February 2nd, 2011 at 2:16 pm
Now, I know Nolan has said no Joker or Two-Face in the sequel, but he also said no Catwoman either and we know how that just changed. I’m wondering if Levitt will do a fill in as the Joker per fan speculation awhile back after DKR premiered.

Hugo Strange – is there any doubt about it?
My guess is that the Doug Moench’s storyarc Prey will be adapted with little tweaks. For instance , the Night Scourge character could easily trade places with Bane. That story arc really shines some light on the psyche of Bruce and it´s one of the more mature treatments on the Bat.
He´s one of the most formidable opponents (please skipp Matt Wagner’s treatment on the character for the Monster Men story arc) and a logic choice for Nolan since he’s not a freak on the outside.

I DON’T recall nolan saying no joker but saying no using of footage of heath ledger as joker. maybe he will be one of banes henchmen like bird or zombie or trig
February 2nd, 2011 at 3:47 pm
Really? you people think he’ll be Hugo Strange, Deadshot and Azrael? seriously?
Its more likely he’l be a cop or something, like Jason Bard. Maybe Alberto Falcone (Holiday). That might be cool.
February 2nd, 2011 at 4:12 pm
He’ll be Signal Man! LOL!
Actually Jason Bard also sounds very logical.
February 2nd, 2011 at 4:24 pm
I’m with whoever said he’ll be cast as Dick Grayson.
You can ha-ha all you want and insist “Nolans has said he’d never” blah blah blah. If you remember, Nolan also said around the publicity of BEGINS that he didn’t want to tell a Joker story. Well, he changed his mind on that, he could change his mind on this.
Then again, he doesn’t care the least about casting people to look like the comics. Michael Caine…Alfred? Um, no. Tom Hardy…Bane? Um, no. Anne Hathaway…oh, forget about it. So, who does Gordon-Levitt look the least like? That’s who he’s likely to be in Nolan’s over-rated Batman-in-name-only-man-I’m-glad-this-is-the-last-one movie.
Case closed: He’ll play Cobblepot.
February 2nd, 2011 at 4:29 pm
Yeesh, how many villains are gonna be in this thing? So far we’ve got the following either confirmed or strongly rumored:
Bane
Selina Kyle/Catwoman
Talia al Ghul (with maybe a Ra’s al Ghul cameo?)
Hugo Strange
Riddler
Maybe Cilian Murphy might do another Scarecrow cameo?
February 2nd, 2011 at 4:41 pm
Well I guess now he can’t ruin the villain roles so like most have already said, a detective/cop type role would be obvious. 3 villains, would be overkill. Catwoman of course is debatable as a villain depending on how you look at it.
February 2nd, 2011 at 9:16 pm
He’ll probably just be a district attorney or ADA since the previous ones are dead now. I doubt Nolan would make the mistake of adding too many villains – his magic number seems to be 2:
1. Ra’s & Scarecrow
2. Joker & Two-Face
3. Selina & Bane
Generally, one villain tends to be deeper than just a “bad guy”. Ra’s in the first, Two-Face in the second, and presumably Selina in the third.

KITE MAN!!!!!!
February 3rd, 2011 at 6:17 am
Nygma – unlikely, but he would be great.
Grayson – Unlikely, and actually a bit too old by now.
Random cop/attorney/anchorman/pizza delivery boy/villain henchman – more likely, but seems like a waste of talent.
Joker – I really, really doubt it. If Nolan actually decided to have the Joker, JGL would be one of the very, very, very few actors who could pull it off. But that’s still a ginormous IF to begin with.
A mob boss, like Tom Wilkinson in Batman Begins or Michael Jai White and Eric Roberts in Dark Knight? Probably the most likely scenario.
February 3rd, 2011 at 6:30 am
I could also see him as Nolan’s version of Bullock, surprisingly enough.

certainly like your website however you need to take a look at the spelling on quite a few of your posts. Several of them are rife with spelling issues and I to find it very troublesome to tell the truth on the other hand I?ll definitely come back again.
