McG ‘Odds-On Favorite’ to Direct WONDER WOMAN Pilot

January 25th, 2011

In a move surely to inspire decidedly mixed reaction, McG, the director of Charlie’s Angels and Terminator Salvation, is the “odds-on favorite” to direct the pilot of David E. Kelley’s Wonder Woman series, says Michael Ausiello.

Let’s look at this reasonably. Yeah, a lot of people didn’t like his Terminator movie (though surely someone liked it… right?), but as far as his work in TV goes, he directed the pilot of Chuck as well, and that turned out pretty well. He’s a producer on another series adaptation of a DC comic — Human Target — and clearly has experience with female characters and independent women. McG — born Joseph McGinty Nichol — also co-wrote the song “Fly” by Sugar Ray, and though I’m not sure if that translates positively or negatively to potential ability to direct a Wonder Woman pilot, it’s at least worth noting, right?

I wonder if he’ll direct it like a Charlie’s Angels movie with the music and the explosions. I might actually want to see that.

    haha…

    mwahahaaa….

    Bwahahahaaahaaaaaaa…

    McG…

    HA!

  3. NeoSamurai Says:

He’s also got an Exec Producer credit for Supernatural which is an amazing series that makes one wonder about if there are two McG’s floating about hollywood.

  4. IronChefHarpo Says:

So this is why they changed the costume to the hideous thing it is today. They wanted to make the character more marketable to television and motion pictures. You win again, liberal America! Bunch of bastards.

  5. Mike Says:

    @ IronChefHarpo

Yes, because the classic outfit would never translate well on a TV show…….

    Oh wait.

McG has got some good credits as well as the bad. And frankly, the Charlie’s Angels movies were fun camp that didn’t take themselves too seriously. That basically sums up the 70′s Wonder Woman series… so, why not?

  6. Freight Says:

How does putting pants on a character without any translate to liberal agenda?

    Meh.

McG is hot or cold with me. His work is either outstanding or deep in the bowels of terrible cinema. That being said, his style doesn’t seem in line with the tone of the comics, so I wonder what this take is going to be like.

Without the horrid jacket, the new costume is actually pretty good.
It just needs some amendments, is all.

Either make the WW bigger, or give her the eagle breastplate.
Make the pants a darker blue with a splash of stars, then add superhero-ish boots and BANG! Keep the headband, belt, lasso, bracelets, straps, and burn the jacket, and the costumes a keeper.

Women of action shouldn’t be running around in strapless bathing suits. It’s kinda dumb.

  8. FalconSebbin Says:

Well, considering his past and present TV show work, I think they may be on to something there. Between Fastlane in the past and executive producing on Chuck and Supernatural in recent years, I’m pretty sure the man’s got what it takes to get this done.

  9. mike Says:

does it really matter who’s directing this? it was going to suck anyway so one more point in the suck column

  10. Roland Says:

Its funny that statement about women of action! Lynda Carter did it for three years and everyone took it for granted that it was fine for tv. I would prefer to see her in a version of Donna Troy’s one year later costume. Wonder Woman is Greek inspired and the costume should reflect that. I have no interest in seeing Cathy Crosby on my tv screen week after week! I think humour is a given on this show and I do not hate any of the Charlies Angels movies. So I am hoping for something between Diana working for the DMA and the Phil Jimenez, Greg Rucka run.

  11. Masschine Says:

The basic concept that makes Wonder Woman who she is is no longer in the project. DC should just take their money and tell them to remove all references to the character’s names, costume and background.

    >IronChefHarpo<

Conservatives are NOT allowed in the entertainment industry unless they are villains. Its amazing how Liberals are for free speech when its only in there favor. Conservatives cannot express free speech look at Chuck Dixon.

Wonder Woman: I give 3 episodes before its canned.

I choose to agree with NeoSamurai and others who have pointed out that McG just might be the right one for this. If it’s no good, then there are plenty of other shows on my dvr. Why be negative? You either dig it or ignore it.

  14. Ryan K Says:

Follow the Smallville Model/recipe and the show will be great! Young actors and an origin story!…Done! Sell iiiiiitttttttt!

  15. Mike Says:

Will the whole concept of Wonder Woman even survive the litmus test of today’s political correctness? The basic concept is that “Man’s World” is a world of war and conflict, and Wonder Woman is sent by the Amazons to teach them the way of love and peace (while kicking the butts of anyone who happens to prefer war and conflict). But today’s state of PC-ness is hellbent on equalizing male and female to the point that making any general distinctions between male and female whatsoever (aside from which restroom to use), however true those distinctions may be, is considered barbaric and relegated to episodes of “Mad Men.”

  16. Kel-El Says:

Masschine, how is the basic concept of Wonder Woman lost?
Is your assertion based on some general description?
    Is she a superhero? Yes.
Does she have a day job? Yes.

Isn’t that the mold for 95% of superheroes? The basic concept of WW was changed when George Perez got hold of her and turned her into an asexual adventuring priestess.
Her creator put her in Man’s World, gave her a day job and a love life, and allowed her to experience being a modern woman and inspire modern women.

Even the old TV show shifted Diana Prince into a modern setting with a modern day job that just happened to bring her into conflict with subpar villains or weird aliens. Even Carter said she tried to play WW as a regular woman who just happened to have powers.

Why don’t you wait until you see the pilot before judging?

  17. David Fullam Says:

So someone will get kicked, then spin around 15 times before hitting the ground? Pass.

  18. Masschine Says:

Kel-El the concept related to in another article is basically a distaff Batman. The description “Deadline describes Kelley’s version of the iconic DC superhero as “a vigilante crime fighter in L.A. but also a successful corporate executive and a modern woman trying to balance all of the elements of her extraordinary life.”” Even in her older original concept she was a bit of an ‘alien’ in Man’s world. There’s no mention of Amazons at all for the TV show. While Perez brought her more into the Greek Pantheon and it has been revised since even the previous TV show brought some of that ‘baggage’ and I think she was hardly asexual.
There is a concerted effort to take the costumes out of the superhero genre making it simply an action genre. There should be that sense of wonder about someone different and outlandish and some of what has been great about her has been that difference.

  19. Brett Says:

hah Didn’t he do something on The OC?

  20. Bridie Says:

Hi. contrast can be restated in a deviating way.

  21. Gianna Says:

This request has been standard for many years. This consequence becomes even more marked.
