Three new stills from X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

Perhaps in an effort to combat the promo shot (allegedly) leaked earlier this week of the X-Men: First Class cast in their costumes, Fox has released three stills from the actual film.

The film is set to be released in the summer yet, according to L.A. Times’ Heroes Complex, cameras are still rolling. Oh dear. Check out the other shots after the jump.

“I’m at that stage where I feel like a boxer against the ropes,” said director Matthew Vaughn, “I’m just throwing punches and taking them as they come and making sure I don’t hit the canvas.”

Fox has made sure to steer clear of the costumes this time around as this still shows Kevin Bacon and January Jones in a more relaxed 60s-style setting. The director of Kick-Ass, Vaughn has a lot more riding on this particular foray into the comic book realm. “I’ve never worked under such time pressure. The good thing about the independent world is I never even knew if I was going to get distribution,” he told the L.A. Times, “I’m used to finishing a film and then crossing your fingers that someone is going to like it. This is totally doing it the other way around. We’ve definitely got a release date and we’ve got to make it.”

“We’ve got to make it,” huh? Yikes. This does not instill hope in the already shaky film. At least we can see some things never change. Actors James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, Xavier and Magneto respectively, enjoy a game of chess in this last shot.

And asked if he’s concerned about all the other superhero films coming out around the same time as X-Men: First Class, Vaughn replied, “With ‘Green Lantern,’ I don’t know about that one, I couldn’t get my head around the trailer, to be honest … look, I will say the following: X-Men as a brand is bigger than Captain America, Thor and the Green Lantern, all put together.”

Producer Bryan Singer, director of the first two X-Men films, said “The biggest challenge is introducing an audience to these characters in a different time – characters the audience is familiar with but now see played by younger actors and in a story taking place in a different time. We have to establish this universe.”

Do these new stills make you more or less concerned about the film after the preview promo shot? Does the fact that they’re still filming worry you?

yeah, X-Men was also a bigger brand then Iron Man before it came out… Today, not so much…

    Um…. January Jones looks good.

I was not worried from the first promo-shot. -I thought they looked like the team from that Generation X made-for-TV film or that Mutant X show they had for awhile…
    Those were both kitschy fun.
Not awesome or anything- it’s just that’s what that particular group-shot reminded me of. Obviously from these you can tell it’s not going to be like that at all though. -And that’s a good thing seeing as how it’s 2011.
