DC’s FLASHPOINT Event Teasers Have Begun (again)

January 13th, 2011
Author Lucas Siegel

Flashpoint is coming, and today DC’s The Source blog is dealing out the teasers all day today. We’ll have them here lickity split for you as well. The heading of the first post was “Whatever Happened to the World’s Greatest Super Heroes?”

So what does that ominous tagline mean? Well, the first tease is: “The Spaceship never crashed.” The most famous spaceship in the DC Universe is the one that brought baby Kal-El from Krypton to Earth, allowing Superman to eventually lead Earth’s heroes.

As Rob pointed out in the comments though, another big spaceship crashed, belonging to Green Lantern Abin Sur. That crash directly lead to the Green Lanterns being heavily involved in Earth history and events, from Hal Jordan receiving his ring, to the other 3 Earth GLs, all their friends and interactions; that one has a LOT of consequences behind it.

What is it that caused the spaceship to never crash? Which one was it? Does this mean it landed naturally, or didn’t make it to Earth at all? Quite a few questions from a single line come to mind, so feel free to speculate below, and stay tuned as we update all day with new teasers.

Updates, and more teasers after the break:

Well this one is a little more blatant. “He spends his days running Wayne Casinos” sure seems like it would obviously point to Bruce Wayne, who currently spends his nights as the Batman. It could be referring to his father Thomas, though, I suppose. This is starting to sound like a lot of “What If” style scenarios… more later!

“They experimented on him in a lab for years.” OK, that one is a little more confusing. The first thought would be J’onn J’onzz the Manhunter from Mars. After all, what do tabloids tell us happen to little green men all the time? They’re experimented on! It could also be this strange man that can breathe underwater, though. Got something better? Let me know below.

“Where is his ring?” Now that one SURE sounds like it’d be talking about Hal Jordan. Shawn had a great guess in our comments section that these may all be slightly misleading, trying to make you think it’s one character when it is really someone slightly different. Regardless, all signs point to what many of you are guessing, some kind of alternate world where something went wrong… more in a couple hours!

“Their marriage was arranged to prevent war.” Now this one is a bit of a brain teaser. Could it be about two big characters out of the big seven? Maybe Wonder Woman and Aquaman? Or is it about a previously established political marriage like that of Starfire’s? This one is tougher- what do you got?

  1. Rob Says:

The second famous spaceship is Abin Sur’s.

  2. Lucas Siegel Says:

Oh! Good call, Rob! Editing now…

  3. Mike Says:

I can only hope one of these “flashpoints” is Dick Grayson never put on tights.

  4. Michael Cross Says:

Flash has sucked since Barry Allen came back, so I’m not even gonna touch this “event”. Everything in Marvel and DC-land seems to be “events” these days, yet NOTHING ever changes. The same old status quo of the 60′s and 70′s always seem to be in place, and I’m surprised after all these years, people still buy into the “everything will change/nothing will stay the same” taglines. This is why there’s no new readership, its because younger people find these stories to be very lame and cheesy. See what Fantastic Four is doing? You honestly think whoever dies in that title will still be dead 6-12 months from now? There’s gonna be another “event” in that title that will hype up the original four’s return and how the title will be going back to its roots, etc, etc. Same old rehash. These days, its pretty much independants for me!

  5. Nero Says:

Wasn’t there an old episode of the Super-Friends with Lex Luthor going back in time and undoing everyone’s back stories. So Superman’s rocket is sent somewhere else, Lex collects the Ring, and so on?

  6. Lou Jack Says:

They started setting this up in the last issue of Flash, with Professor Zoom going back and time and changing things in his own past.

  7. Dude Says:

I’ve got an idea. How about Hank Henshaw never beams his consciousness into the Birthing Matrix, which means he would never become Cyborg Superman, which means he would never have made Mongul destroy Coast City, which means Hal Jordan would never have become Parallax, which means the Green Lantern Corps. would never have been completely destroyed and Hal Jordan would never have become the Spectre, which means that the entire Green Lantern Rebirth thing would have been unnecessary. Oh wait, that’s right: according to Geoff Johns’ “Superman: Secret Origin”, there was no Birthing Matrix, so all that should just be regular canon. Nevermind.

Here’s hoping the next time they decide to do some sort of continuity reboot, they don’t half-ass it and just wipe the whole slate clean.

  8. Rocko Says:

This tagline has a whole lot of stories that may come out. The idea of the spaceship landing on a different place has been explored in different arcs, like then landing in Apokalips or Comunist USSR proving that the Man of Steel became a hero due to his upbringing not his abilities. If the spaceship lands in a place where there is yellow sun and oxygen to sustain baby Kal-El’s life he will have the same superpowers, what he does with them will depend of nurture and the posibility to access the crystals. What would be interesting is the exploration of a story if Kal-El dies before arriving anywhere, how would other heroes evolve? Another interesting arc would be if the landing occured in a place like Mars before the extinction event or him being found by any of the Lantern Corps.

  9. Martin Gray Says:

Love Superman as I do, I get so bored with this add-on idea that the other heroes are such ninnies that they need Superman to inspire them.

I’m sure they’d do just fine.

  10. muthasucka Says:

    @ Michael Cross:

Wait, nothing has changed in DC or Marvel since the 70′s? Wow, so Dick Grayson is still Robin and Bruce Wayne doesn’t have a son, and Jason Todd never died and Tim Drake never became Robin and there’s no Batman Inc, and Katma Tui is still alive and Superman and Lois aren’t married and Oliver Queen doesn’t have a son and Roy is still on heroin and Captain Marvel, Question, Blue Beetle and Captain Atom aren’t in the DCU, and Steve Rogers is still Captain America and Bucky Barnes is still dead, and Odin is still alive and Asgard is still where it’s supposed to be and Peter Parker is still in high school and Wolverine is still an operative of the Canadian government and Colossus, Storm and Nightcrawler are all still in their respective countries of origin?? Awesome!

First of all, things have obviously changed, at least a little. Second this is NOT why young people don’t read comics like they used to or they be actively seeking out all the alternative titles that don’t do this – instead they play video games and drool on the internet. Third, it’s pretty obvious that this event is not about actually changing the status quo, but about seeing what it would be like without that status quo and then going back and fixing it.

  11. Rob Says:

    Thanks for the credit.

Why I think the first one is still Superman (start with the first) I think it would work smarter if Reverse Flash is behind it for him to want to start with Barry’s best friend.

Also hope it is not changing one thing but more sublte manipulations. If Bruce is running casinos then it may be changes to Thomas and the type of man he was or maybe Bruce getting adopted by someone corrupt.

  12. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

In Science Fiction it’s known as a ChangeWar.

My big question is how this will tie to Booster Gold, who has been spending his entire new book fixing little changes like this, all the time talking about how you can’t change history this radically…except when you can, of course.

  13. Steve Jeffers Says:

The Flash bounces around history chasing someone who’s undoing all the secret origin stories. Geoff Johns is overseeing it, so the villain is an evil Superman of some kind – Superboy bashing that wall again. Cue slightly different versions of characters having a big fight, it turning out that the Flash isn’t fixing things, he’s making it worse. It would be a great twist if the real villain was Kang. ‘But … but … you’re from Marvel. WTF?’.

Bruce Wayne becomes … Biff from BTTF2.

Once again, all DC can think to do with Superman is take him off the board. The only way they can show us how awesome Superman is is doing ‘imagine a world without Superman’ stories. I live in a world without Superman. When I read Superman comics, I want to read about a world *with* Superman, that’s kind of the whole point.

  14. Johnny B. Says:

    @ muthasucka

Jason Todd is alive and calling himself Red Hood.
Roy IS still on heroin, in fact.
Peter Parker isn’t still in although they did wipe away his entire marriage.

You have to admit, there is a HUGE craze at DC for sending things back to the Silver Age. Hal is back, Barry is back, Orin is back, Ollie is back, Captain Boomerang is back, Kara Zor-El is back, Krypto is back, the original Doom Patrol is back, the original Legion of Superheroes is back. Hell, they even toyed with returning Oracle to Batgirl.

Hawkworld? Continuity mess. Gone. Wonder Woman? She’s a founding JSA member! Wait, no she’s not. She’s a founding JLA member! Wait, no she’s not. Wait! Oh yes she is! But wait!!!! Now she’s in jeans and a leather jacket and NO ONE has EVER heard of her. Do you think this “change” will be the new status quo or that she’ll go back to star spangled hot pants?

Some changes have been great! Love characters like Tim Drake, Kyle Rayner, Connor Hawk, Kate Spencer, Jack Knight, Courtney Whitmore, Stephanie Brown, etc. Not quite such a fan as some of the other “replacement heroes” like Jamie Reyes or Arthur Joseph Curry or even the young Zatara.

While the DCU is constantly changing, can you honestly say that a lot of the “new and exciting” changes aren’t undone? That things aren’t being redirected to go back to the good ol’ Silver Age? The powers that be at DC are very up front by saying “Yeah, we’re doing this because that’s what the ‘general public’ are familiar with. You say The Flash and they think Barry Allen. You say Green Lantern and they think Hal Jordan. So let’s give them what they want.

(Mind you, when I think of The Flash I think of Wally West and when my son thinks of Green Lantern he thinks of John Stewart and my dad thinks of them both as Jay Garrick and Alan Scott.)

  15. Simon DelMonte Says:

The spaceship is of course the Challenger. And the altered timeline is that of Astro City.

  16. Kevin Says:

We know that the Flash will be the major player in this, that Reverse-Flash plays a major role, and Geoff has stated that Booster Gold not investigating Reverse-Flash destroying Barry’s past will “be addressed”, and that Rip Hunter will see the effects of the Flashpoint in Time Masters.

We also know a Flashpoint, in the literal sense, is the starting point that radically leads to war.

Thus, here is my theory: The Reverse-Flash, who has been altering Barry’s past to give him pain, along with Zoom, who believes that a hero needs tragedy to be a better hero, decide to alter ONE EVENT in time, a seemingly small event. This causes the utter destruction of the Age of Heroes. Abin Sur lives. Bruce’s parents live, making Bruce more spoiled and entitled (my theory). And much, much more. The result leaves Barry and the speedsters as the only true heroes left, with those heroes that are still around now in bitter feuds with each other.

The Flash, along with Booster Gold and Rip Hunter (They are The Atom and Mera of Flashpoint, playing the same support roles as Mera and Atom in Blackest Night) must travel through this world, trying to find the ONE Event that changed everything…the flashpoint.

  17. durkardurka Says:

Sounds similar to Mike Carey’s Age of X storyline that will be starting this month in a few X-titles, except with DCU-wide changes instead of just Xavier never forming the X-Men.

But Bruce Wayne as Biff Tannen? Watch out Marty!!

  18. Johnny B. Says:

OOOH! The spaceship that never crashed was the Thanagarian one that crashed in Ancient Egypt! Thus Prince Khufu / Carter Hall is no longer linked to Thanagar and we can have Katar Hol back and restore even MORE of the Silver Age!

(Please don’t. Leave Hawkman alone. He’s been through enough).

  19. Anthony Says:

any else see this as being somewhat akin to marvels bullet points?

  20. darima80 Says:

“The Spaceship Never Crashed.” Doesn’t necessarily mean that baby Kal-El didn’t make it to Earth. If you look back at the first teaser for Flashpoint (can’t remember if that was in the last issue of Rebirth, the first issue of the current volume or in the most recent secret files) but it shows Barry in the middle coming at you. In the background you can see a large steel door with the S-shield on it being guarded but some sort of military suit. I’m guessing the spaceship was “intercepted” rather and maybe the US government has Kal-El.

Since I brought it up, let me refresh everyone’s mind about this teaser. It also showed Wonder Woman wearing warrior armor (check out the aliteration!) with Big Ben in flames behind her; Batman was in a flooded Paris; and finally, you can see a glove sporting a White Lantern ring.

  21. Tejay Says:

I like Kevin’s theory… that would so work for me..

  22. Rob Says:

New one could also be Superman.

If #1 is not Superman and GL that is.

  23. Johnny B. Says:

So will it turn out that Wonder Woman’s recent revamp was Reverse Flash just checking out his new plan? Will this now be a new excuse to future continuity errors? We’ve had Crisis on Infinite Earths, Zero Hour, 52, Infinite Crisis (or “Superboy Prime punching the walls of reality”) and now Reverse Flash.

Mark Waid’s hypertime was so much simpler.

  24. Russ Burlingame Says:

This is a job for Booster Gold! After all, who’d expect him to be able to handle it? ;)

  25. Josh W. Says:

My guess is the spaceship is Abin Sur’s and the experiment one is Superman.

  26. Jack Says:

If this event isn’t setting up the return of the Big 7 JLA I don’t know what will..

  27. Johnny B. Says:

apart from running back in time and changing all of the Silver Age origins, will this book address the Golden Age characters that would still be around? The Spectre? Doctor Fate? Plasticman? Uncle Sam?

  28. Shawn Says:

I think the theme with all the clues is it won’t be the “go to” character you would think.

  29. lanternut Says:

My money’s on Kevin’s theory as well. Sounds like now that Blackest Night is put to rest and we’re nice and organized running some of the things over in the DC management department Geoff is ready for his next epic with a goal to justify why we still need Barry back.

Bruce running a casino… he’s smart enough to not screw you right at first but you leave wondering how you drained your whole life savings…

  30. Glenn Walker Says:

I am reminded of Justice League of America #37. The one where the Earth-One Johnny Thunder commands the Thunderbolt to go back in time and prevent the JLA from becoming the JLA, and he proceeds to go and muck up the origins of each hero, so that they never exist. The Thunderbolt saves Krypton, Abin Sur and Barry Allen, and tampers with the origins of the Atom, Martian Manhunter and Batman. Sounds like Flashpoint is similar, only with possibly the Reverse-Flash doing the dirty work…

  31. Craig Says:

I think maybe the red herring is thinking that these teasers refer to multiple people/events.

Maybe these ALL refer to Abin Sur. If his ship doesn’t crash, but he lands here safely, but somehow his ring is lost or taken and he gets caught and experimented on. When he’s finally free, he disguises himself and ends up working for Wayne…

  32. Crimsonrain Says:

ok…so basically this story line is looking like something happens at key points in the DCU timeline and one or all Flash’s have to go back and try to find out what was changed and how to correct it?

  33. Craig Says:

I think the experiment in a lab could be superboy. Think about how we first saw Conner breaking out of a lab. Perhaps if Superman never died Conner might be some wierd experiment. Or they could be testing on Mon-El. But those would be stretchs. A lot of that has to do with Superman. The clone would not exist, or he would be mixed from somone else. The Legion would not be formed and Mon-El might not have been to Earth.

  34. Joe_Kach Says:

Barry Allen has a ring, too.

  35. Johnny B. Says:

    The spaceship never crashed.

No baby Kal-El = no Superman
No dying Abin Sur = No Green Lantern
No Thanagarian Nth metal in Egypt = No Hawkman and Hawkgirl

He spends his days running Wayne Casinos.
    No Batman/woman/girl/dog/mite/Inc or Robin/Red Hood/Red Robin/Nightwing/Flamebird/OMACS/Knight/Squire/I’m getting dizzy

They experimented on him in a lab for years.
Could be Kal-El, Martian Manhunter, Arthur Orin Curry, Abin Sur
Hell, it could be any Golden Age hero or villain for that matter.
Capture and experiment on Max Mercury, The Ray (Happy Terril), Blue Beetle (Dan Garrett) or even a time-lost Booster Gold and history could get fubar.

    Where is his ring?
Any of the GL’s (including Abin Sur) or The Flash (he wears a ring)
    Or it could be he pulled a “One More Day” DC-style and un-did a pivotal marriage: Barry/Iris? Ralph/Sue? Carter/Shiera? Clark/Lois? Orin/Mera?

  36. Steve Says:

Maybe each one has something to do with one of DC’s 52 universes. One where Hal Jordan didn’t get the ring, one where Kal-El’s ship never crashed, etc.

  37. Javier Says:

So… no one’s suggesting a legionnaire for the missing ring?

  38. Serge Says:

Could the ‘running’ bit in reference to Wayne casino’s be a pointing not just at bruce but also to a speedster?

  39. IronChefHarpo Says:

I haven’t read ALL the comments, but could the fact that it’s called “Flashpoint” be a hint that the series centers around the Flash or the Speed Force?

  40. silogramsam Says:

Well, considering we are talking about the “World’s Greatest Super Heroes” and that’s a tag usually reserved for the JLAers and, historically, for the original JLAers, I doubt Abin Sur is one of the answers to the clues. I’d say, as most have, the more obvious answers are Superman, Batman, J’onn J’onzz (or Aquaman – pending more clues), and Green Lantern Hal (while it could be Barry Allen, I’d guess that his clue will be more specific to the speed, not the contraption for the uniform).

  41. silogramsam Says:

I don’t know whether there will be more clues or if so, 7 in total or 10 in total or more but I’d suspect at least 3 more (if we go with the original 7 (and I don’t mean the Mercury astronauts) and 6 more if we go with the original 10 (although Hawkman may prove problematic considering on Earth 0, the only Hawkman as an original member was also a Golden Ager/JSAer first).

  42. Matthew E Says:

    Next one will be:

“Gingold went out of business after their failed switch to ‘New Gingold’ in the ’80s.”

  43. Rey Says:

What happened to her costume? should be the next preview.

  44. Johnny B. Says:

“Someone told him big medallions and turtlenecks look silly with fedoras. Go away.”
    -Phantom Stranger

  45. Anubis8 Says:

Dan DiDio & his pack of yes men should all be canned for this SA resurgence crap.

  46. Evento global DC del 2011: FLASHPOINT - psicofxp.com Says:

    [...] [...]

  47. Michael Says:

You want to know why people don’t need comics look at all these negtives words

Oh well that american I will need these BEFORE I judge its like a smart comic book fan

  48. Kel-El Says:

I just wanted to point out that if Abin Sur is the one who never crash landed, he’d still be Earth’s GL.

So, eliminate is crash and you eliminate Hal Jordan as GL. You don’t necessarily eliminate GL.

  49. Kel-El Says:

    Aunbis, get a life.
Nobody’s forcing you to read anything. Jeez.
Go on across the street to Marvel where they’re getting ready to start up Fear Itself. Enjoy.

  50. Woofus Says:

Unless there are red herrings, I would assume that these refer to separate heroes, and that all of them would be major ones. Therefore the spaceship that didn’t crash belongs to baby Superman, the missing ring is Green Lantern, the arranged marriage is between Wonder Woman and Aquaman, and the experimentation victim is the Martian Manhunter. Batman is obvious. That means we’re still waiting for a Flash teaser.

  51. Chris B Says:

Anybody else think that even though he “spends his days running Wayne Casinos”, he still spends his nights as Batman? I mean, he’s clearly Batman in the preview pages while Diana seems to have changed to some alternate version of herself. Oh, and the ring might refer to Boston Brand or whoever becomes the white lantern.

  52. Charles Brown But You Can Call Me Chuck! Says:

There’s one thought that crossed my mind considering this Flashpoint storyline. I know it’s a Flash themed tale that is DCUverse wide. But there’s supposed to be a big Aquaman/Aquawar event coming up that it seems Brightest Day is eluding to these days. How could Flashpoint lead into that?

Another thought is in regard to Superman.
With the rather extensive and intensive legal battle between the heirs of Siegel and Shuster against Warner Brothers and D.C. for the rights to Superman, I’m wondering if we’ll see any kind of revamping/retooling of Superman’s history. Maybe the character will be retooled with a somewhat different origin story out of Flashpoint? Maybe this will be the first step in devising a way for D.C. to keep Superman as a property?

Speculation, I know. But thanks for baring with me anyway. ;)

  53. Prof Zoom Says:

This likely involves Reverse Flash Eobard Thawne running through time to alter history so that there are no Dc heroes. He can’t alter Barry’s past though since he needs Barry’s connection to the speed force to power the negative speed force. Hence Barry and the rest of the speed force speedsters running through time to fix the mayhem Thawne has caused. This should be fairly obvious to anyone reading the Flash right now. Thawne is outntomruin Barry’s life. He’s not out to make him a better hero through tragedy, that was Zoom aka Hunter Zoloman’s motivation.

  54. Josh Says:

    @Dude:

Wait, wasn’t the Birthing Matrix taken out of play in Birthright and not Secret Origins?

  55. DangerDrVenture Says:

My guesses? These are obviously all results of an altered timeline that has to do with the future(Zoom, the Thawnes, etc)

    The Spaceship is Superman.

Bruce never became Batman and, instead, became a mobster in Gotham who runs Casinos. He may be a fearful tool of the mob to fund their Casino operations.

Martian Manhunter. A different scientist found him and turned him over to the government.

The ring? Jordan and the Corps. They’re probably gone.

The marriage arrangement has to be referring to the Thawnes and Allens, who are all linked to Zoom, Bart, Barry, and even Boomerang’s dead son.

  56. MrWasabihead2 Says:

After reading the “marriage” one, the first thing that popped into my head was Hawkman & Hawkgirl. Or maybe Aquaman & Mera. Either of these seem possible, especially since they seem to be going with more well known characters.

  57. Progressive Reader Says:

“Experimented on” makes me think about Ray Palmer, because of the Lab connection. Both Palmer and Batry worked at labs.
It could also be Martian Manhunter, sure. But I haven’t seen anyone mentioning Ray Palmer.

  58. DevoDave Says:

The “marriage” one makes me think of the Twilight of the Superheroes synopsis that’s out there, with the marriage of Captain Marvel & Mary Marvel.

Not likely, but that’s what it reminds me of.

  59. ACMC85 Says:

    @ muthasucka

While some obvious things have changed, a lot has reverted back, ignoring that I have no idea on the Marvel side. I am grateful Grayson has made progress and Clark and Lois getting married was great though.

Seems to me, Roy is on heroin again and Oliver doesn’t have a son, hence the convenient way they put Conner out to pasture. Blue Beetle, Captain Atom and Question are in transition hell also. Besides the two I mentioned, I wouldn’t be surprised an “all new retro look.”

  60. Aquafan Says:

My thoughts after reading the teasers and looking at the Flashpoint preview art in Flash #1.

Reverse Flash is CLEARLY mucking with time, as seen in issue #8. I also think all the teasers are about the JLA’s big 7. Could this event lead to the long rumored Geoff Johns/Jim Lee JLA book?

    “The spaceship never crashed”
    1. Superman. We see Supes makes it to earth cause in the teaser art, there are guards in front of a big vault with the ‘S’ Shield. Maybe the govt intercepted the ship in space?
    2. Abin Sur never crashed and never died so never gave his ring to Hal Jordan

“He spends his days running Wayne Casinos”
    1. Clearly this is Batman….wonder what he does with his nights? Teaser art has Batman and Flash fist fighting

“They experimented on him in a lab for years”
    1. MArtian Manhunter. Maybe the govt intecepted him when he was first transported to earth?
    2. Superman. Again the teaser art has some armed dudes guarding a vault with Superman’s log on it.

    “Where is his ring”
    1. Green Lantern probably. teaser art shows a white Lantern’s fist. Maybe this will tie in to the search for the White Lantern?
2.Flash. Barry wears a ring and in teaser art Barry’s ring is spitting out a Reverse Flash costume instead. Could that be Thwen though? Changing time to replace Barry?

“Their marriage was arranged to prevent war”
    1. Aquaman and Wonder Woman. seems like a no brainer. Maybe Atlantis and Themyscira have a big war in europe? In the teaser art you see a flooded Paris (or maybe thats vegas and ties in with the Wayne Casinos) and Wonder Woman in front of a burning Big Ben.

All this leading to a reunited classic JLofA

  61. Aquafan Says:

    Thwen=Thawne = )

  62. Michael Says:

fLASHPOINT Looks to be fun I want more Teasers I love Teasers and these does not sound like to be a big event

  63. Robt. Says:

All of the hints probably refer to the Big Seven, minus the Flash. But a couple of other options do spring to mind.

Where is his ring could refer to Brainiac 5′s ring that Booster Gold wound up with. Booster is in the story, according to Johns, but I’m not sure a Booster who doesn’t fly makes that big a difference to DCU history.

Their Marriage was arranged to prevent a war… Well, with the Aquawar coming up, I’m guessing this is related to Aquaman. But what if it wasn’t Orin and Mera’s marriage that was arranged, but, for example, Mera and Black Manta who got hitched? Or Mera and Ocean Master? Or Orin and Lori Lemaris? :)

  64. Rob Says:

having just seen the latest reveal:
It is Aquaman and WW married.

    The ring is The Flash

So maybe I am right and the ship is Abin’s
