In my introduction post yesterday I mentioned I got my DC superhero dress from Etsy. In case you’ve never heard of it, Etsy is the greatest/worst website in the world. It’s a place devoted to handmade crafts, art and vintage items people all over the world have decided to sell. And I buy pretty much all of it. It’s a sickness.
Besides shopping for yourself, Etsy is a great place for finding gifts. I bought more than my fair share for friends and family there this holiday season. No matter what you or your loved ones interests are, you can bet there’s an item for it on Etsy. There’s even a whole section of the site devoted to “geekery.”
Once a week I’ll be sifting through the millions of listings to find the best in geek chic for Blog@ readers. I’ll probably stick with certain themes usually but to start us off today, here’s a sampling of just some of the great finds you can score on Etsy.
For instance, this Custom Tetris dress:
Going for $65, seller ZidishaLuxe also has a NES Controller Dress available for $70.
For the fellas, how about a wallet made out of Fantastic 4 Comic Books?
Seller punkxkittyxprincess has several other wallets featuring different characters all going for $5 but you can find many different kinds of this same type of item by doing a search for comic wallet.
There’s countless amounts of knit-wear on Etsy but if you yourself are craft-inclined you can easily find interesting patterns for sale as well. Take for example these kick-ass fingerless Batgirl gloves.
Ansleybleu also has a pattern to make an insanely cool Princess Leia bun wig. Each pattern is $7.95.
Fans of Doctor Who will instantly recognize the character on this t-shirt. Are You My Mummy?
Seller geekboypress certainly knows his market. Pick up the t-shirt for $10 or, if you’re feeling chilly, perhaps a nice Cyberman Hoodie to warm you up for $30?
Bear in mind, since Etsy is a craft website and not a commercial, mass-market dealer, items are almost always one-of-a-kind or in very limited availability. When you see something you like, buy it. It may not be there the next time you surf round. Hence my perpetually empty wallet. Also, since most items are created individually, many sellers are willing to customize something specifically to suit your needs. Just ask!
