This is the perfect blog for anybody who wishes to understand this topic. You realize a whole lot its almost tough to argue with you (not that I really will need to…HaHa). You certainly put a fresh spin on a subject that has been written about for years. Excellent stuff, just wonderful!

At Barnes and Noble it was shelved in the "humor" section. Strange place for it, I think.

The actual Dewey subject headings appear in the Sears List of Subject Headings, which is currently in its 19th edition. There are also the Library of Congress subject headings, which are somewhat different - and, at least 20 years ago, came in two fat hardcover volumes (Sears List is one hardcover volume). And I'll tell you that the people in charge of Dewey will flatly state that the illustrated nature of Barry's books will land them in the 741 call number area. End of discussion. Believe me, a bunch of us librarians lobbied strongly for allowing graphic novels and other illustrated books to be cataloged according to their substantive subject matter, but the people at DDC were unmoved.

Actual CIP subject headings are assigned by the Library of Congress, not the publishers. Those oddball "subject headings" are definitely not official. And most graphic novels don't have LC or DDC subject headings; I know this because I have to assign most of them myself when I add graphic novels to the Graphic Novels Core Collection database for H. W. Wilson. And I use the Sears List.
