Cool blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it from somewhere? A theme like yours with a few simple tweeks would really make my blog jump out. Please let me know where you got your design. Kudos

Going back to Year One: I've always believed that Frank Miller was trying to completely remove Batgirl from continuity by making Gordon's wife's name Barbara and then having James Jr. as the only child (instead of Tony and Barbara from pre-COIE days).

Smaller, purple boots? Dear god, man. What are you advocating? She's not a pre-teen shopping at Delias.

Regardless, the only thing this article did was make me pine for classic Babs as Batgirl even more than I already do.

One semi-notable 'other media' version was the shortlived Birds of Prey TV series, where Barbara as Batgirl was shown a couple of times.

The costume was fairly faithful, though the cape was black and the gloves and boots struck me as being too long. Dina Meyer did make an excellent Babs/Batgirl, though.

BLUBEETLE3: At the time, that was correct. The Who's Who entry referred to Pre-Crisis history. Post-Crisis, Batgirl Year One and other comics established Barbara as shorter and missing the height requirement was a recurring joke in the first chapter, hence Batgirl having heels in the costume.

"Although she was skilled in martial arts, had detective instincts and was adept at computers, Barbara was too short for field work and refused to have a desk job."

WOW! Gotham must have the tallest police force in the U.S.A. because I remember WHO'S WHO IN THE DC UNIVERSE listing Barbara at 5'11"!

EDWARD J CUNNINGHAM: No apologies necessary, just making sure things are clear. :-)

CLAUDIO POZAS: Not really. The Question's mask looks like flesh with features removed. Cassandra is clearly wearing a mask and she's not unique in having such a look in comics. I'm not saying there's NO resemblance, just that I don't see it as a rip-off.

@ Alan:

I think it's interesting to notice that we've had Batgirls that had blonde, red and black hair (notice how, pre-Crisis, even the redhead Jason Todd dyed his hair black to be Robin). I prefer Batgirl with her hair showing, and that picture of Helena with her black hair out is really good.

I was never a fan of Cassandra's full-face mask, specially the stitches. The no-face makes her kinda like the Question, no?

@Alan Kister

OK, that makes more sense. If Jim Gordon is supposed to be only ten or fifteen years older than Batman, then it would be hard to imagine him having a daughter only enough to be Batgirl unless Babs was conceived when Jim was in junior high school. Please accept my apologies.

DaVeO: I'd like to see a few different options. Maybe turn the black boots into full on black leggings with smaller, purple boots. And the spiked scallops would've been nice on the gloves, yes.

Alan: Fun article as usual. For Bab's "The Batman" costume what colour would you have liked to see for her leggings? As for the gloves would you have peferred the spiky ones she wore in the comics, and what colour?? In that pic I never realized how thin her wrists were, lol.

JLAJRC: Some did indeed. Barbara sported that look for her first several stories, a visual reminder to us that she was a librarian who many people saw as a "plain jane." She went to the long, glowing hairstyle later in order to impress a man and kept it as her standard look afterward.

EDWARD J. CUNNINGHAM: The kid in Year One would never have been Barbara anyway. Even if Gordon had been given a newborn daughter instead of a newborn son in Year One, that would mean that she would've been too young to ever join Batman and Dick Grayson on their adventures a few years later. She'd only be about 14 or so now, younger than Tim Drake. The decision had already been made to make Gordon a younger man by a couple of decades, which meant Barbara had to be changed in some way. The story that she's his adopted niece has been around for over 25 years now Barbara's still going strong with fans, so it doesn't seem to have hurt her. If you don't like it, that's fine, but there was thought behind it rather than just a mistake, especially since the whole purpose of Year One WAS to change parts of continuity.

BAYHATER: Batman wasn't around, it was Cassandra and Barbara who said Steph could do the job. And Bruce said a few times that he blamed himself more than Stephanie for having come up with the war games in the first place and for his secrecy leading Steph to not understand certain things that would have prevented the later tragedies.

CLAUDIO POZAS: Evil twins can have their own columns and if there isn't a strict basic criteria set up, then the piece goes on way too long. Talon wasn't included in Robin for the same reasons I didn't include Wrath in the Batman piece and won't talk about Bizarro or Ultraman in the Superman piece.

Did women really sport the Princess Leia hairstyle that Barbara has in this article? In fact, Leia is the only one I know who has ever had that type of hair. I can't think of any old movie or tv show (or any current movie or tv show set in the past) with women with that hair?

I love Stephanie's costume (and Stephanie as Batgirl in general). The blonde look works, with the gold bat and utility belt. But the utility garter has to go.

Also, Alan, on your Robin article you should have mentioned Talon, the evil Robin from the Crime Sindycate's Earth who partenered with Owlman. Although he's a parallel Robin, he did join the Teen Titans during the One Year Later period.

I still hate spoiler, there is no way batman would let her be batgirl after she technically got a ton of people killed in War Gamres. never forget!

"Neice"? For crying out loud, can't DC Comics admit that Frank Miller made a MISTAKE when he had Jim Gordon's wife Barbara give birth to a son instead of a daughter? Why do they feel compelled to change the history of their characters to fit ONE trade paperback rather than get an editor to correct Frank Miller?

KALORAMA: It's not that I think it shouldn't look like a teenage girl. As I said, my problem was that it made that aspect too strong and didn't find a balance between teenager and super hero. And as always, that's my opinion, so feel free to disagree, I just want to be clear on what I'm saying.

FAZHOUL: She was indeed spray-painted in the face. Which then led her to worry that she needed to take better precautions that she needed to protect her secret identity, ESPECIALLY from Batman. In her narration, she specifically noted Batman's powers of observation.

NEO SAMURAI and RC: At the beginning of the article, I said very specifically that, as usual, parallel realities would not be mentioned in this piece. Right at the beginning, just as has been the standard practice.

Simply curious. Why no mention of the Batgirl suit version from All-Star Batman and Robin?

he live-action version of Batgirl had a golden cape and the version of her that showed up on Batman the Animated series later got a cape that was gold on the inside. For this reason, some artists, when showing Barbara as Batgirl in flashback stories, have given her cape a yellow or gold interior.

The live action Batgirl's cape wasn't all-gold as you seem to keep saying. Only the interior was gold. The outside was purple. I just double-checked on Youtube.

A great article as usual Alan. But, IIRC, Helena switched to the full face mask because someone sprayed her in the face with paint (tagging of territory was an ongoing storyline in "No Man's Land"). After she finally got the paint removed she wore a full face mask to prevent her secret ID being compromised. I never really cared for the full face mask myself. It might not have been so bad except for the "stitches" that attached the piece over the nose and mouth to the rest of the mask. The stitches were drawn way too thick and just looked stupid.

I have to disagree on The Batman version of Babs. I think both the costume and the character are the among the best treatment Batgirl (as opposed to just Barbara Gordon) has ever gotten. It's exactly the kind of costume a teenage girl would design. Those Batman/Batgirl episodes of The Batman were the best in the show's run, and bringing in Robin really kind of dulled the edge. And the costume is supposed to say "teenage girl" because that's what she is.
