Late this summer, Archie Comics introduced the Life with Archie magazine, which I glowingly referred to as “the weirdest comic to come along in years,” due to its Dilton-exploring-the-Archie-parallel-universes subplot.
The performance of that title has led Archie to add another magazine format title, Veronica & Betty (inverting the common Betty & Veronica name). And like Life with Archie, it’s going the Tiger Beat route and putting tween idols on the cover — in V&B’s first issue, we’ve got Katy Petty, Selena Gomez, Dakota Fanning and the Twilight cast. (And, um, based on that cover copy, is Archie trying to manufacture some sort of Selena Gomez/Dakota Fanning feud?)
The concept of the series sees Betty and Veronica — er, Veronica and Betty — becoming exchange students, leaving Riverdale and exploring the world. In turn, Riverdale gets a couple of foxy foreigners, turning the heads of Archie and Reggie, and presumably encountering Jughead’s cold indifference. Like Life with Archie, it’ll include magazine-y features.
It’s written by comics vet Michael Uslan, who also penned the high-profile 2009 Archie Marries Veronica/Archie Marries Betty comics. It’s drawn by long-running Archie artist Dan Parent, the creator of Kevin Keller, the first-ever gay Archie character that got a fair bit of attention earlier this year.
