So you’ve seen the Entertainment Tonight teaser. Well, how about the real deal trailer?
io9 has posted a full-length version of the Green Lantern trailer (albeit with Spanish subtitles). Here we get to see Abin Sur, Sinestro, Kilowog… well, what do you think??
EDIT: Now without subtitles! Also, if/when that gets taken down from YouTube, here’s the official Apple link.
November 16th, 2010 at 7:06 pm
Wow. I’m not really a lantern fan, but that looks interesting.
November 16th, 2010 at 7:06 pm
That looks like it’s going to be a great episode of Smallville.
November 16th, 2010 at 7:10 pm
I’m not really impressed. This whole retro-fitting a personality on Hal Jordan just rings false to me. It just doesn’t feel right — and I can’t get excited about it. Certainly, it is clear that people put a lot of love into this — but it isn’t what I would have done with it. Best of luck with it DC …
November 16th, 2010 at 7:10 pm
At least the galactic angle is fresh, and it’s not another generic urban superhero flick.
The woman who says ‘this test today is important’ is terrible.
November 16th, 2010 at 7:12 pm
hmmm, certainly better than the ET footage looked, but i’m still leary. Kinda feeling like Rynolds was a bit miscast…
November 16th, 2010 at 7:31 pm
Much better quality version up @ Apple now: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/wb/greenlantern/
November 16th, 2010 at 7:38 pm
so the good:
Abin Sur looks amazing.
the Oa stuff, while looking a little overly cartoony/CG-y, also looks danged impressive.
The flight effects on Oa with all the various Lanterns looked cool.
First time i can recall seeing an F-35 in a movie.
The Bad:
Again, just having a hard time with Ryan Reynolds overly “goofball” tone ~ can he bring the gravitas?
Sinestro? (yellow eyes, big head?) looks really comical.
Don’t like the “muscle lines” on the costume, they’re really distracting.
the requisite Punks beating up a superhero-to-be moment was pretty cliche.
the flying effect where they show Ryan Reynolds inside the cascading energy effect wasn’t really working for me. (again, he comes off kinda goofy)
Possibly showing too much for a teaser trailer…
The Ugly:
Blake Lively looks absolutely terrible. Her line delivery is tragic.
Kilowog, but i guess he’s supposed to be.
November 16th, 2010 at 7:57 pm
Artiepants, Sinestro didn’t have yellow eyes or a big head – That was Hector Hammond.
Also, Sinestro does have yellow irises in the comics.. With black scleras(white parts of the eyes).
I still don’t like the playboy characterization of Hal. Or the bad CG.
And the ring design looks like an unfinished class ring with no stone.
Ok, it looks like a train wreck in progress but I’ll be seeing it opening day.
November 16th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
effects do look terrible as do other things but we all know we going to see it anyway, green lantern is such an amazing comic so it could work on film. Blake Lively did seem terrible, never watched gossip girl so she new to me
November 16th, 2010 at 8:01 pm
Reynolds may be playing it a little too “Tony Stark” but only time will tell. Oh and the guy with the yellow eyes and big head isn’t Sinestro..it’s Hector Hammond. Kilowog looks awesome..god I hope they don’t screw the pooch on this one.
November 16th, 2010 at 8:10 pm
Certainly willing to wait and see, but I agree with artiepants about Blake Lively: terrible. Beyond terrible. Dear-God-can-you-somehow-digitally-replace-her-before-this-is-released-with-someone-who-can-act terrible.
November 16th, 2010 at 8:12 pm
Like alot about it, though “this test today is important” made me cringe too. Sounds WAAAAAAAAYYYYY too forced.
Otherwise, like this alot…for a trailer. I am expecting the CGI to be cleaned up alot more by the time it is released.
November 16th, 2010 at 8:13 pm
I dont understand all the complains about how Hal Jordan is shown. Hal is egocentric and confident, specially on early days, what this movie is supposed to be.
He isnt too “Tony Stark”. He is Hal Jordan just fine.
November 16th, 2010 at 8:25 pm
Yeah, the CGI will be polished more for the release. Remember the first time we saw Ironman shoot that tank in the IM teaser. That looked 1000x better in the finished movie.
All you nerds complaining about how Hal Jordan is totally different need to take a deep breath and chill out. The studio is investing millions of dollars on this flick, they’re not going to have some 1950s style, square jawed hero to appease the 20 or so people who still read GL comics.
You guys should be glad that you’ll get to see OA on the big screen and thank your lucky stars that you didn’t end up with Zack Effron or Justin Bieber playing GL.
TLDR: Be happy that it looks half-decent and stop complaining that Hal doesn’t have grey temples.
November 16th, 2010 at 8:26 pm
I want this to not suck. Please don’t suck.
But..Ryan should have been Kyle in GL 2 or 3, not Hal. Hal is chosen originally as being fearless. Ryan is a goofy sidekick at best. Kyle works his way up to being worthy of being a GL. I still think Jeremy Remmer should be Guy.
November 16th, 2010 at 8:34 pm
sorry about the Hector Hammond/Sinestro confusion ~ i’m not totally up on my GL ~ MY Green lantern will always by John Stewart from the Justice League animated series!
(did they ever really get into GLs rouges gallery on JL/JLU? I don’t recall)
November 16th, 2010 at 8:41 pm
I thought this was amazing. I mean, Abin Sur! Tomar-Re! Kilowog! Sinestro! Oa! It certainly seems to deliver the space epic as promised.
I loved the design of the ring too. Harkens back to the Grell re-design of the late 70′s when the Guardians “upgraded” their equipment, including the rings. Perez still draws it like that.
The negativity of some stuns me. Thank God the internet wasn’t around when Chris Reeve was getting suited up with the blue tights and red cape!
November 16th, 2010 at 8:42 pm
Not really. We got Sinestro, Mogul, and Star Sapphire (not the real one, though)
November 16th, 2010 at 8:44 pm
@Crusader k
Yeah, I can see it now: Reeves is too skinny! Superman is suppose to be big and tough! That guy looks more liek Robin that Supes! This movie is going to blow!
November 16th, 2010 at 8:47 pm
I will see I was underwhelmed by the Batman Begins and Iron Man trailers, and I ended up loving the movies.
I also loved the trailer for Superman Returns, but I hope that science can one day improve so that I can have the memory of that horrible movie erased from my mind.
So being somewhat underwhelmed by this trailer is probably a good sign for me.
November 16th, 2010 at 8:48 pm
Great looking Sinestro – I’m not that impressed with the trailer though. Wow – I can’t decide if the girl or her dialogue was worse. If you are going to write clunky dialogue, you need to get a better actress.
Sinestro looks so good that I do hope there is a sequel.
November 16th, 2010 at 8:51 pm
Looks phenomenal! Much more excited about this than any of the upcoming Marvel movies.
November 16th, 2010 at 9:01 pm
See these is why DC does not like making movie because every time they do fans bitch and cry that its too cartoonist Hello its a Comic Book Movie not everything need to be stupid and boring like batman.
I love it and would much rather see these then Thor
November 16th, 2010 at 9:04 pm
Better than I’d expected, but then I was figuring a total disaster. Ryan’s character should really be renamed Kyle Rayner, because that’s the personality he’s portraying.
November 16th, 2010 at 9:16 pm
This trailer looks absolutely awful. Ryan Reynolds is terribly miscast- yay, Van Wilder saves the universe! His gravitas is staring blankly with his eyes wide. I’m not going to pay to see his schtick for two hours.
Blake Lively has zero charisma she can’t act. Even Abin Sur is boring — how can you screw up an alien?? He looks like just a guy in a mask.
Very disappointed. The only cool part was Oa.
November 16th, 2010 at 9:27 pm
So disappointed on so many levels. Forget that this is a superhero movie, this just seems like a really cheesy movie with bad acting in general.
November 16th, 2010 at 9:34 pm
The movie comes out in 7-8 months…. Obviously this is still a major work in progress. They cut together some really cool scenes and scenes showing all the major characters. I would guess that what we saw is barely 75% finished CGI work and that it still needs to be polished. Especially that last scene.
Be that as it may, I am truly excited to see this. It shows a LOT of promise. This trailer is on par with the first Iron Man trailer that showed the suit, etc.
People just need to chill and let them actually finish it.
November 16th, 2010 at 9:38 pm
SUCK IT DEEP POZERS! KILOWOG LOOKS AMAZING!!!!!
November 16th, 2010 at 9:39 pm
Some of the dialouge does feel a little forced and weak.
But the special effects look great, and Hal has always sort of shifted schizofrenticly between a womanizing, arogent jerk, and a sad sack, introspective, self loather.
November 16th, 2010 at 9:44 pm
Christ… I hope the movie ends up being better than this trailer looks. As it is, when I go to see the HP movie with the family and friends this weekend I know I’m going to have to try to defend this. “Hey, it’s only the trailer… I might turn out a lot better,” or something like that.
Ryan Reynolds is acting more like Kyle than Hal, and Blake Lively might very well be the worst actress in Hollywood today. I was feeling embarrassed for her while listening to those couple of lines she delivered. Looks like WB is going for an “Iron Man” vibe here, but Reynolds is no Robert Downey. That fan-made Nathan Fillion trailer? It looks a thousand times better than this.
I’m hoping the final product won’t be as goofy as the trailer suggests. I really want to this movie to be good and for the DCU (aside from Batman) to finally make its mark on the big screen the same way the Marvel U has. Sadly, however, I’m not seeing it here.
Shit… At least Sinestro, Kilowog and that GL with the fish head (I don’t remember his name) looked good. That’s the only good thing I can say about this trailer though. The suit looks like crap, and so does the acting and dialogue.
November 16th, 2010 at 9:44 pm
The funny/sad thing about this is that they cast him because, just like Chris Pine as the new Captain Kirk character, he is what they think we want to see. Kirk was a military character who worked really hard to get where he was and had achieved the old fashioned way. What did they do? Rewrite him as a wise cracking smart ass. I never thought of the Jordan character this way. He was a pilot. Wasn’t he Air Force in the old days? I don’t think he’s ever been written as this action/comedy wise ass. Maybe Adam Sandler could have played Hal. Chris Rock as Stewart. Dennis O’Leary as Guy Gardner.
November 16th, 2010 at 9:46 pm
This looks fantastic! I’ll be taking the day off work to see it with the wife!
The CGI looks good, Ryan Reynold’s can bring humour and gravitas to a role – he’s proven himself. Oa, Sinestro, Killowog, and everything else looks great as well. Judging Blake Lively on two lines seems pretty petty.
The costume on Reynold’s looks good but it’s very tight (I know it’s CG) – can’t get that “it’s like I’m wearing nothing at all!” comment from Ned Flanders out of my head!!! Stupid sexy Hal Jordan!!
Most of the comments about Hal’s personality are off-base. The character’s been written as a cocky, egocentric, overconfident ladies man for a number of years now.
In fact he was written that way long before Downey Jnr (and the producers etc) retooled Tony Stark’s personality to better fit his own. So comments about the film “Tony Starking” Hal Jordan are ignorant.
November 16th, 2010 at 9:48 pm
Michael said: “Hello its a Comic Book Movie not everything need to be stupid and boring like batman.”
If by “stupid and boring” you mean well written, well acted and great film making, then you’re right. The Nolan Batman movies elevated “comic book movies” to something beyond juvenile, goofy storytelling. There’s no reason a “comic book movie” can’t be a great film, as Nolan (and a few others) proved.
I’m still hoping GL will be a good movie, but this trailer has done nothing to convince me otherwise.
November 16th, 2010 at 9:49 pm
“See these is why DC does not like making movie because every time they do fans bitch and cry…”
…because they always seem to be second-guessing themselves, as this trailer demonstrates all too well. Lively does look completely miscast, and the CGI mostly made me think of the Fantastic Four movie..the Roger Corman one.
November 16th, 2010 at 9:51 pm
Kevin said: “People just need to chill and let them actually finish it.”
Nice sentiment, but I’d guess it IS pretty much finished.
I mean, unless you think they’re going to go back and re-shoot entire scenes with completely different dialogue and replacing Blake Lively? Unlikely at this point.
Maybe the really good stuff isn’t in the trailer. I hope so. Isn’t Geoff Johns involved with this? His comics are good. But this trailer? Not so much.
November 16th, 2010 at 9:56 pm
Good lord, there sure are some fussy, cranky little full-diaper-cases in these comments.
Usually, I find myself speaking up in defence of comic fans when people say dickish things about “typical fanboys,” but some of you guys make me wonder why I bother…
November 16th, 2010 at 10:01 pm
Batman well written LOL the dark knight had so many plot wholes they should of call it Batman Cheese
November 16th, 2010 at 10:05 pm
Wow….Thor is looking 1000000000 times better than this crap
November 16th, 2010 at 10:12 pm
wow. too many people have no idea about Hal Jordan’s personality. He was a cocky, wise-cracking womanizer from the get go. Heck, his whole personality was designed to be the archetypical suave adventurer (ala James Bond). I think too many people may be confusing Hal’s personality from 89 through the 90s as his true personality–which is very not so (and also one of the reasons so many people were upset with Emerald Twilight).
Heck, if you don’t believe me, read Mark Waid’s Justice League: Year One for a more modernist and pre-movie portrayal of Hal.
November 16th, 2010 at 10:21 pm
@Shaun
I do agree that the Test is Important line was really bad. But her other line I like. And everything else I enjoyed about the trailer, save some minor fears that the regular public will mock Hector (not realizing that in the comics, he actually has an even bigger head).
As for Hal’s character, others have said it best…he has always been a womanizer and sarcastic. Heck, that’s is one defining trait in Casstoons! The only reason we haven’t really noticed it is because Johns hasn’t given Hal a moment to breath since Sinestro Corps Wars…seriously, as Carol pointed out, shouldn’t he be going home to see Cowgirl…you know, his current girlfriend?
Go back and read Secret Origins, or his adventures with Ollie in the revamp…Hal is a wisecracker, a womanizer, and he don’t take kind to authority.
November 16th, 2010 at 10:35 pm
@Neo Sam: well said!!
…And not just Waid’s run! Read the original stuff! That’s how long I’ve been reading GL, and I don’t have a problem with this, why do y’all?
Why is EVERY movie adaption a crisis for you guys??
I don’t get it!
November 16th, 2010 at 10:52 pm
I agree that Hal has always been a sarcastic womanizer. But he’s also been suave, manly and fearless…which I get none of from Ryan’s portrayal. When he delivered the line about Green Lanterns needing to be fearless and that he’s not, my wife said, “Well then why did the ring pick him??” Good question.
Beyond that, my issue is with the decidedly 80′s fantasy movie vibe. I found myself thinking of The Labyrinth for some reason. The lantern isn’t a lantern, the emerald light is more of a green gas, the fearless Hal is fearful and the ring does look like a class ring to me. Just odd choices all around.
But I’m betting that 8 yr olds will love it, and it’ll be a big hit.
November 16th, 2010 at 11:03 pm
You nerds make me sick. You’re the reason “Comic Book Guy” was created on The Simpsons and I’m afraid to tell a woman I like comics. I’ve been reading comics for over 25 years and I NEVER thought I would see the day that a Green Lantern movie would be made, let alone one with these kind of effects. Just quit being cynics for ONE F-ING minute and try to think like when you were a kid again. This movie is going to be GREAT! Quit worrying about whether Hal is just right, or if the suits looks too fake and just enjoy it.
I’m done reading comments on this site. You guys need to lighten the hell up.
November 16th, 2010 at 11:06 pm
Everything but Lively looks amazing!
That is Hal Jordan Green Lantern on film! I can’t wait until June!
November 16th, 2010 at 11:08 pm
If this movie is appealing to f#@%!ng kids, then they should just make an animated movie. Oh wait they did and also have a GL cartoon coming out soon. If anyone has seen the RED trailer, then you will remember that trailer was great, even though the actually movie was sh!t. This trailer is sh!t and does not make me want to watch the movie. I really hope this is just bad marketing.
November 16th, 2010 at 11:09 pm
Hal Jordan is supposed to be more James Dean and less Jim Carrey. Ryan Reynolds would’ve been better suited to play Kyle Raynor.
November 16th, 2010 at 11:12 pm
Thanks @BatFan86! I came REAL close to logging out for good, but you brought me back!
November 16th, 2010 at 11:17 pm
I’m just glad I’m not a huge GL fan. This looks like something made in the 80′s.
Not worth watching and this trailer cinches it.
November 16th, 2010 at 11:55 pm
Hmmmm… Not sure yet… Definitely has potential, but I thought the same thing when I saw the X-Men: Origins Wolverine trailer and that was the worst movie I saw that year! This trailer was much better than expected, but some of the scenes looked a little too “hollywood” and fake looking (the helicopter crashing into the crowd, the building collapsing, the scenes with Hector Hammond). Some of Ryan Reynolds’ scenes looked okay and some did not. NOT sold on the costume and I agree with everyone else on this!
November 17th, 2010 at 12:19 am
People who are complaining and Ryan Reynolds is acting more like young, fresh, and wide-eyed Kyle Rayner instead of stoic and boring Hal Jordan, here’s a question for you:
Who the hell cares as long as the movie is good?

Which James Dean are you referring to? The character in Rebel Without a Cause, in which he starred as a troubled teenager? Or loner Cal Trask in East of Eden? The surly farmer Jett Rink in Giant maybe? The fact that James Dean himself, as well as the three known characters he portrayed in film are NOTHING like the character of Hal Jordan proves one thing.
You know next to nothing about Green Lantern.

You forgot to add that these are the same guys who constantly complain about movies like Star Trek, Superman Returns, Transformers, Daredevil, Hulk, and Star Wars 1 – 3 etc YET STILL HAVE THEM ON DVD!!!
They are the ones who constantly whine and moan, “I’ll never see this!!!” – yet they’ll be the first in line at the cinema to see this film, and every other comic-related product coming out.
November 17th, 2010 at 3:19 am
NO, NO, NO, NO, NO !!!!
Ryan Reynolds is NOT Hal Jordan! Bobby Campo from “Final Destination 4″ is Hal Jordan!
TERRIBLE casting. TERRRRRRRIBLE. Even Carol Ferris is mis-cast.
Just awful. BOOOOOOO!!!
November 17th, 2010 at 3:59 am
Yes This wat i was hoping for LOL
November 17th, 2010 at 4:05 am
Add me to the ranks of the unimpressed. The FX aren’t good, even for a trailer. The acting is poor. It looks like a generic action film. And while I know Hal can be a jerk, this is taking things way too far. The comparison with new Star Trek’s Kirk is apt.
I think that a lot of nonfans will walk away from this ready to save their money.
November 17th, 2010 at 4:13 am
Watched the 1080p version from Apple’s site on my TV. Kind of has an Iron Man feel to all of it, which I guess is what they’re going for with the trailer. I will say that I was pretty distracted by CG of the final costume changing shot in the apartment. That scene really needed some color correcting done to the shot as the neon suit sticks out like a bad photoshop. The suit looks great in the other scenes, though. Odd.
November 17th, 2010 at 5:16 am
People should really relax on the should have no fear thing. Seemed quite obvious from the trailer that Hal overcoming his fear and becoming the Hal we know from the comics, is the story of the film.
November 17th, 2010 at 5:38 am
Reynolds was poor casting.
They should have found a way to get Bradley Cooper. The Newsarama polls even told them Reynolds wasn’t a good choice. If the fans don’t like it the rest of the market won’t either. Guess they’ll still make tons of cash though. They won’t get any from this fan.
November 17th, 2010 at 6:19 am
Lovin’ it!!! To me it seems they got Hal’s personality just right. Cocky, arrogant, but a bit unsure of himself at first (just like he was originally written!). I skipped the 90s and jumped back in recently, so it’s the Hal I know and love. Kyle Rayner? Come on folks.
I think the CGI looks great, especially Sinestro and Kilowog and the suit’s OK too. It looks a whole lot better than green and black spandex would have! Don’t forget how far CGI has come. Anyone remember the original Tron?
Can I buy my tickets now?
November 17th, 2010 at 6:32 am
“In online rants,

no trailers are ever liked by nerds.
And those who continue to bitch and whine,
on opening night, will be first in line.”
November 17th, 2010 at 6:53 am
I have to disagree, Flintstone. Hal definitely has a James Dean (the public persona that he cultivated), Bradley Cooper vibe. He’s arrogant and smart alec, but it doesn’t come from a place of insecurity (like Reynold’s does), it comes from a place of “I could take you in a fight OR talk your girlfriend into leaving with me.”
November 17th, 2010 at 7:02 am
You know who poorcasting the fans
November 17th, 2010 at 7:21 am
This has been said more times than I can count in the comments here, but I’ll say it again: Ryan Reynolds was terrible casting for Hal Jordan. I’ve liked Reynolds in some things so this is nothing against him personally, he’s just completely wrong for the part. Hal should be more of a stoic badass than an obnoxious goofball.
November 17th, 2010 at 7:38 am
But it also looks like they really dug into the mythology, which is a plus. In drama, a character needs a “place to go” or, better said, “a place to grow.” Though I am not a fan of Reynolds in any way, I can see that they wrote it so the character grows from cocky, yet fearful jerk into hero. Give ‘em a chance.
November 17th, 2010 at 7:55 am
Someone explain to me why Reynolds would be a good fit for Kyle if he isn’t a good fit for Hal? I’m not seeing this at all.
Do you guys remember what Kyle was when he was found in that alley? He may have been coming out of a bar, but he was an artist with a girlfriend. Not really a stoic goofball either. He’s always been a character unsure of himself, hardly someone like Ryan Reynolds
So you guys are on here complaining and whining about a movie that isn’t out yet, and saying the lead role should be another character in the books whose persona he’s even less like than Hal Jordan. Good times.
November 17th, 2010 at 8:10 am
I don’t have a problem with Ryan Reynolds. Let’s face it – Hal didn’t have much of a personality period until the O’Neil/Adams GL/GA series began….this updating of Hal will be fine.
The only thing that looks bad is Blake Lively. The girl can’t act. I’d much rather they gone with an actress that was good.
Everything else will be fun. Some great moment, some good, and probably some cheezy, but it looks like it will be an entertaining movie.
November 17th, 2010 at 8:17 am
I don’t know… the trailer didn’t do it for me. The effects are subpar and the tone is clearly derivative of the Iron Man films. And the actress playing Carol Ferris is weak… I dunno. Of course I’ll see it so that’s what matters.
November 17th, 2010 at 9:04 am
sorry, but to the naysayers…okay, you don’t like it.
I on the other hand am loving it. The “Oh, the carol ferris chick is terrible” is just so much junk. It was one line. ADD isn’t just an affliction, its a way of life.
The effects were great. The boxing glove…classic.
Hammond looked like the black hearted worm he is…just hope the start off with the smooth character in a suit from his origin.
Sinestro looked like the arrogant ass he is.
Hal had the cocky flyboy jetjockey attitude down pat by Reynolds.
Martin looked like he really got what the film should be and was holding pretty well to the story.
Looking forward to this.
November 17th, 2010 at 9:06 am
I’m really trying hard to like the trailer but the music seemed very ‘Flash Gordon-y’ without the coolness of Queen. The costume looks really goofy, like that 1979 Roast of the Superheroes kind of camp. The cringe worthy dialogue is also making it difficult.
Ryan Reynolds sounds like Superman 3: Richard Pryor in that scene where he is showing off to the kid. I hope this scene ends up on the cutting room floor.
The other scene where he tells Blake Lively ‘Let’s get these pants off and fly some planes’ made me embarrassed for the writers.
Other than that, it’s okay.
November 17th, 2010 at 9:37 am
Every comic book movie comments thread always has two predictable narratives running through them…angry (rightfully or wrongfully) comic fans who dislike the adaptation, and condescending commenters who mock and insult the naysayers for being “typical” fanboys. Of the two, I think the latter are way more annoying and border on self-hating. If you think the movie is good, say why you think it’s good. Enough with trotting out the anti-fanboy digs every time someone disagrees with you.
November 17th, 2010 at 9:54 am
I love how the people who attacked the much superior Thor trailer with baseless attacks are getting pissed with legitimate complaints about the Green Lantern trailer.
November 17th, 2010 at 10:03 am
what ppl seems to be forgetting is that this movie have to bee accessible for non-readers too so if some parts sound cheesy is cause is something already seen
this doesnt look bad at all
November 17th, 2010 at 10:06 am
Well, T, I would definitely fall in the latter. I come to this site because I LOVE comics. I always have and always will. I’m pretty old-school with what I like. I’m not too much for the dark stuff. I like to read about someone who just wants to do the right thing. I get enough “dark” watching the news. That’s just my thing and I certainly don’t hate on those that like the dark stuff. Actually…Blackest Night was pretty damn dark and I loved it.
What did I love about the trailer? First off…the visuals looked amazing. Someone on here said it looked like an 80′s movie. REALLY? Look at the scene with Tomar flying up on Oa and Hal watching and tell me what 80′s movie that looked like. Last Starfighter? Gimme a break. I don’t like all the CGI stuff all the time either, but he’s on another FREAKING PLANET. You complain about the costume. Guess what, Christian Bale’s costume wasn’t spandex and you guys think Dark Knight was the second coming. I’m just glad he’s not in a damn leather biker suit.
I think the character will be good. Hal is cocky, and remember, in this movie he’s young. In the comics Hal is more mature, but this is an origin story. It isn’t in modern comic continuity.
All I’m saying is for just a minute, remember what made you love comics in the first place. Quit nitpicking and really take a look at what is happening. A GREEN LANTERN MOVIE!!!! I never in a million years thought I would see this day. Maybe kids will love it. GOOD. The comic industry needs new fans. If this movie gets even one kid to start reading GL then I’m happy.
Of course Blake Lively will suck. Just like every prerequisite female “love interest” sucks in these movies. Deal with it. They need to have something for the women. It’s called give and take people.
I’m not anti-fanboy. Hell, I’m probably a bigger one than a lot of the people on here, but one of the reasons I love comics is because they make me feel like a kid again. I don’t love every superhero movie out there, but if you honestly think that this will be as bad as Daredevil then I think you’re a little wacko.

I dunno- having watched the trailer, it felt like the filmmakers were a little embarrassed about making a “comic book” movie and the cheesy camp feel was intentional. I hope the movie skews closer to Iron Man than Daredevil or the FF movies, but this trailer doesn’t fill me with confidence. It looks a little hokey-not the spawling epic I had pictured at all. I guess we’ll see.
PS.- It’s okay not to like everything ever. Really. Not liking something doesn’t make you cynical or a self-hating fanboy or whatever.

Someone said they wanted the people who are annoyed by the negative posters to put what they liked. Consider that done now:
My Likes
-Ryan Reynolds. Yes, he doesn’t look like Hal. Its the face, really…its too long. But despite what you all say, Christopher Reeves didn’t look like Superman. Just like Christian Bale doesn’t look like Bruce (Bruce has a square face with black as can be hair…not a long face with dark brown hair).
But Ryan ACTS like Hal. Hal is sarcastic. Hal is a womanizer. Hal likes to walk in, pick up a girl and get in a fight (Remember, that’s how he met John Stewart the first time, according to Secret Origins). He is someone that talks first and thinks later. Is Ryan playing Hal as serious as Hal is currently? Of course not…because this Hal hasn’t watched his mentor and friend turn to evil, hasn’t seen Coast City destroyed. He hasn’t been Parallax yet. Of course he is going to be more carefree…the seriousness will come later.
This is the Hal that decided, because things were getting too serious with Carol, to just pack up and drive with Ollie and see the country. This is the Hal that can’t even remember the name of the girl he just slept with (Just like Hal did in the Revenge of the Green Lanterns arc of Johns’ run). The car scene reminded me of echoes of him with Ollie or even him cutting jokes in the Batmobile as Batman sat their, glowering.
The people that are thinking Hal is a serious stick in the mud…yeah, that isn’t the real Hal Jordan.
-Abin Sur and the rest of the Green Lanterns: I don’t know why people are saying they look so bad. Abin is wonderfully detailed, and seeing Tomar was like seeing a comic page turned to real life.
-Sinestro: He hasn’t sad a word, which is still what makes me the most nervous, as I have such a clear sound in my head for hisvoice. But the look is spot on.
-The Suit: Love…It. Any other film, I’d say it was utterly silly. But it works here for the simple point that it is a creation of the ring.
-Hal’s Brother: I am pretty sure that the character Hal talks too is his younger brother and not Tom. And if that is the case, I am thrilled. One of my favorite things from Johns run is the relationship Hal has with his little brother…the one member of the Jordan family that sticks by him, even when Hal disappoints him.
-The Constructs: Yes, they are a bit fiery. But it isn’t like there isn’t a history of them being like that…they look a bit like a blend of Alan Scott and Hal’s constructs. That said, it actually makes sense that Hal’s would burn. Remember Rebirth: Guy’s is like a firehose, his willpower just shooting out. Stewart’s is detailed, never hollow. Kyle’s never stop changing, being perfected. But Hal…Hal goes for the direct approach…the boxing glove, formed within seconds and used without blinking.
-Fear: I know there will be people screaming, “Hal is Fearless! That is the point! He is the man without Fear!”. Maybe so…but Carol says it in the trailer and the ring says it to every new Lantern: You have the ABILITY to OVERCOME great FEAR.
-The CGI: I’m sorry, I’ve seen crappy CGI. The T-Rex in Jurassic Park 3 is a prime example for me. I’ve seen ok CGI too. And I’ve seen amazing CGI. For me, this was very, very good CGI. I bet you that you show this trailer to anyone outside these boards, and then tell them the suit isn’t real, they will be amazed. Oa is breathtaking, the few lanterns we have seen look amazing and the use of the ring looks just as it should.
The only things I am worried about are Carol (I am hoping that one line is merely the only example of that…and I am hoping they make her the strong, confident woman she’s suppose to be), and Hector (I worry people will laugh when they see him…not realizing that in the comics, his major thing is his giant head.).

Looks amazing cant wait. If you havnt you should check out the apple trailer it is much better quality.
November 17th, 2010 at 10:47 am
Can’t wait. It’s nice to see DC/Warner Bros give one of their heroes that isn’t the Dark Knight or the Big Blue Boy Scout a film.

I want to like this, but it the elements (acting, costuming, lines) are really hurting it in this trailer. I’ll see it, but there’s something about this trailer that doesn’t sit right.

“Of course Blake Lively will suck. Just like every prerequisite female “love interest” sucks in these movies. Deal with it. They need to have something for the women. It’s called give and take people.”
Wow… that’s sexist and all kinds of offense. ‘For the women’? Really? Because we can’t enjoy a good film without useless frothy romance? Nice, guy. Very nice.
How about a huge problem with Blake Lively sucking lies in the fact that Carol Ferris is one of the very few well developed, mature female characters in a comic featuring a male superhero? If they follow the storyline of her becoming Star Sapphire in a sequel, that would suck a hell of a lot too. If anything, casting Blake Lively was eye candy for men because there are far superior actresses who would fit that role.

To me, this felt like the trailer they’d run on Cartoon Network to lure the kids in, not one that should have been the general public’s first look. You don’t lead with the broad comedy and the Godsmack ripoff soundtrack. If they’d trimmed the jokes out and re-scored this with nothing but the typical recycled Jerry Goldsmith music the internet would be ecstatic about this footage.
Ryan Reynolds is perfect for the role. It’ll be fun to have him cracking wise amidst the more somber content. Just like Tony Stark, Han Solo or Ash Williams, it won’t hinder the movie, it’ll just add some laughs to break up the violence and tacked-on love story.
That weightless, too-fluidly moving Kilowog was kind of a bummer though. Compare that shot to any scene from Pan’s Labyrinth. If they’d used a guy in a suit we’d at least believe that Hal was interacting with a solid object. Dodgy CGI like that just makes you actively aware that you’re looking at a special effect, like Roger Rabbit.
They’ve got time and a great director. I think this will all come together and positively surprise everyone.

With the exception of comedies movie trailers generally contain their best scenes. Also if you’ve seen Buried I think you would agree that Ryan Reynolds is a good actor.
November 17th, 2010 at 1:59 pm
What’s with all the ‘Hal’s fearless’??!!
Daredevil’s the man without fear, kids.
Hal has incredible willpower
November 17th, 2010 at 2:16 pm
According to the original origin of Green Lantern, not Geoff John’s reimaging, Hal Jordan was chosen as the ring bearer of sector 2814 because he was a man without fear.

I really really want to like this movie. But after that trailer, a lot of the dialog seems forced. FX are great and all, but, it’s the characters themselves that make the movie for me. I’m just not feeling it from that trailer. Still planning to see it and give it a chance tho.
November 17th, 2010 at 3:07 pm
Looks good to me.
It is hard to judge the acting and character attitude with the little snipits in the trailer.
The visuals (from what we see here ) look really good
November 17th, 2010 at 4:00 pm
I’m with the positive crowd here. I thought it was largely very cool, with a few questionable elements.
And I’m also guessing most people don’t know how teaser trailers-or movies in general–get made? They will be tweaking the FX on this until a week before release. Don’t worry about the CGI. I bet even the look of the GL costume changes by release time, based on fan feedback from this kind of thing.
This was a totally acceptable preview. I have very little doubt about anything in this movie, save Blake Lively. But even then, how many trailers have we seen with scenes that don’t make the movie, or that instead use alternate takes of the same scene?
I for one am totally psyched to see as much of the GL mythos as has apparently made it into this flick. I will definitely be there opening day!
November 17th, 2010 at 4:58 pm
Yea this went about as I thought it would. People are tearing it before they see it. No news there.Damn. At least give it a chance before u kill this movies. u saw 2 and ahalf mins, and was able to assume it sux, looks bad, silly fx. All standard bs from us fanboys. I like what I saw. Alot. This movie will get my 9 bucks with no regrets.

To everyone complaining about Hal saying that he is not fearless. Have any of you noticed the graphic in the trailer just before he says that line?
- The Graphic says “in our darkest hour”
- Then Hal says the line about not being fearless
- Then another Graphic says “There will be Light”
- The there’s a shot of Hal in the GL suit saving a boy (possibly his nephew?)
Anyway, there is no doubt that Hal is the “man without fear” and Kyle’s journey was more about overcoming fear. But even if you are what some people regard as fearless, becoming a super hero and going into space to join an intergalactic police force, is a whole other thing and I think he’s entitled to have a moment of self doubt.
This is an origin story, so as long as he is seen as THE MAN WITHOUT FEAR by the end of the film, I think that’s fine.

Jane, I appologize for the sexist comment. Yes, I do like Carol Ferris as a character. She takes no #%$& from Hal and ultimately, that’s why he loves and respects her.
My comment was a bit rash. I don’t know what she’ll be like in the movie. Hopefully, she’ll be more like she is in the comic. I guess I was projecting my distaste for Katie Holmes in BB onto her (you gotta admit, she was BAD). Also, I liked Gwenyth in Iron Man. Tony likes her for the same reason. She’s a strong woman who calls him on his B.S.
Now you can add yourself to the list of strong women. You called me out and you were right. I’m man enough to admit it.
I just got tired of all the negative comments and went on a bit of a tirade, which makes me no better than the people I was chastizing. I must have watched the trailer 10 times in a row and got more excited with each time and I just couldn’t believe how many people were being so negative.
Thanks for your candor.

My kid loved it, and my wife, a Star Wars and Star Trek fanatic remarked “That looks AWE SOOOOOOME!” and later said that it looked on par with Star Wars and Trek.
Sorry, know this is a more marvel site, and that “fanboys” love to nitpick and denegrate to some extent, but those people that might see the movie and aren’t comic book fans, will enjoy the hell outta it. And as a nearly forty year comic fan myself, I’m loving it.
Poo poo it all ya like, the effects were great, Lively’s one line was written kinda clunky, but she’ll be just fine, Martin Campbell is a excellent director and he will get whats needed.
Kil was great, you could almost here “Poozers” in your head.
Lovin’ it.

I’m thinking the CG is unfinished. I hope it is. That snippit of Sinestro almost looked like a cartoon.

Hal. You. Are. Late. This. Test. Today. Is. Important.
Acting everyone! ACTING!
November 18th, 2010 at 4:26 am
Feel so sorry now about those Marvel zombies who hoped this would be a failure…
November 18th, 2010 at 8:01 am
drbludhaven,
Thank you for your clarification and apology. I completely see where you are coming from – Katie Holmes and don’t get me started on Kate Bosworth. It is just frustrating that women gets blamed for every crappy movie in theaters. I never base a movie on a trailer so I’ll still go see it, but I do hope that should they do a sequel with Star Sapphire, that Blake Lively will step up her game and do the character justice.
November 18th, 2010 at 9:39 am
Deep_Shock….it is a failure already….i feel sorry for you DC zombies that actually thought this was going to be better than Thor…..
November 18th, 2010 at 3:00 pm
Not a fan of Blake Lively, but I’m seeing it.
November 20th, 2010 at 6:44 am
Everybody quick! Drbludhaven didn’t leave the thread like promised after calling you all pathetic! Give the man your attention!
Trailer was fine. Reserving final call until next June
