Sorry Alan, I usually agree with you on your costume comments, but I don't know how anyone can think Wasp's blue and white costume with one exposed arm and leg and one covered looks good. It's ugly as sin. And as much as I love the new Avengers cartoon, I cringe every time I see the Wasp in costume.

Thanks for that fun piece - though Ms Van Dyne deserved a piece all to herself once she is resurrected (which can't be all that far away). Love her last costume and many of those from Perez and Alan Davis from Avengers (Vol.3). Also have a soft spot for that one-legged number (but yes it is kinda ridiculous).

Alan,

Very nice summary and commentary especially with the challenging scope of all the different versions of Ant-Man and Wasp costumes throughout the years.

Personally, I think the best interpretation of the Ant-Man costume is the one Chris Samnee devised in "Thor: The Mighty Avenger." It's actually a combination Ant-Man/Giant-Man costume, where Hank Pym removes the "mandible" portions of the helmet and stores them on a brace near his collarbone when they're not in use. When Pym becomes Ant-Man, the helmet expands slightly, antennas rise from the seams, and he snaps the "mandibles" back into place. In terms of utility and economy of design, it is the best version, yet.

How come Wasp's costume from the AVENGERS:UNITED THEY STAND cartoon wasn't shown and critiqued? Out of all of the costumes on that show, I thought that hers and Falcon's were the best costumes on that crappy show.

You forgot about Kitty Pryde. She comes in a distant 2nd to Wasp when it comes to heroins who have had the most costume changes.

In defense of Scott Lang's FF-era uniform, I love the changes to the helmet. The original one had antennae like the radios and TV's of the time; these look more insect-like. Also, the mouthpiece was changed from microphone-style to something more suggestive of ant mandibles. The red coloration is also more ant-like, while also recalling (in a good way) Japanese superhero costumes.

On the other hand, I dislike all of Wasp's skirted costumes--including the one for the new cartoon--with the possible exception of that time she went into battle wearing lingerie. The big danger for her is looking too much like Tinkerbelle. Although Disney's Tink basically wears a one-piece swimsuit, a flared skirt screams "pixie" to me, and is too girlish for a character who has grown into a leader.

I don't hate Hank's "Wasp" costume, but I'm not completely sold on it either. The "tail" (singular) is strange, and the stomach segmentation doesn't really work. Also, the coloration is quite similar to Yellowjacket's, which only makes me want that costume back. I do like the goggles, though.

You didn't mention the Heroes Reborn Ant-Man, but I remember liking that update very much.

Alan,
That's not really an accurate description of the circumstances behind the Marvel Feature-era outfit. They weren't street clothes, they were sewn specifically by Hank's friend Trixie (on-panel) to replace his damaged standard costume. She had to sew them to fit the (apparently permanently) shrunken Pym, so they had some interesting "fashion" elements due to the scale, such as "large" stitches down the sides. Even if they weren't so much an intentional costume redesign as a matter of convenience (at least within the story--obviously the responsible parties at Marvel intended this to be his new trademark look), I think the look would have been appropriate for inclusion in the article. But, obviously, it was your call, and, as ever, I enjoyed the rundown. I'm just especially fond of that period of Hank's biography, and think the costume was visually interesting enough to merit commentary.

Well, it was only a matter of time. You can't do a super hero fashion column and NOT mention the Wasp. She has to have the most costumes ever. Because of that and the fact that everyone has their own tastes, there were some costumes in her "worst" category of yours that I actually really liked, and some in her "best" category that I didn't like. I really do like the last costume she had before dying (which was definitely one of the dumbest things Marvel did). And I really like Scott Lang's Ant-Man costume before dying (figures). Even though I hate Janet being dead, I really enjoy Hank as the Wasp and his costume, and I hope they don't switch him back to Giant Man for real. And if they ever do bring Janet back, Hank can keep his Wasp costume and just call himself Yellow Jacket (he is sorta wearing a jacket, anyway).

Have you done Wonder Man yet? I noticed him in one of the panels you chose in his black & red W jumpsuit, and right behind him, on the wall, a shot of the classic green/yellow w/ the red visor look.
*I believe it's the 49 pict from the top*

MIKHAIL: That is true and I didn't include it here because that wasn't really an Ant-Man costume, it was just an outfit Hank Pym was wearing and then when he got into an adventure he threw on the Ant-Man helmet. It's the same as when he used to wear that red suit in West Coast Avengers. That's not a costume, that's just clothes. So because of that, and because we already had an absurd number of images to look through, I dropped it.

MATT D: Well, as I explained, ANT-MAN AND THE WASP #1 came out last week, hence it was topical.

MIKE: Sadly, folks who have not followed Hank's career tend to know him by that one story. To clarify, Hank Pym of ULTIMATE MARVEL universe is indeed a guy who drinks a lot and is a wife-beater. But Hank Pym of the Marvel Universe is a different man.

Mainstream Hank is not an alcoholic. During his career as Ant-Man, which is what I focused on in this article, he was a fun, whimsical scientist who fought crime with a smile and a joke and who had great banter with his girlfriend Janet. Years later, he became a bit more serious and somber in the pages of the Avengers, later even suffering a break from reality due to stress and the inhalation of chemicals he was experimenting with, causing him to believe he was a man named Yellowjacket who had actually killed Hank Pym. He later regained his senses but still dealt with identity and confidence issues, partially also due to the fact that his creation Ultron, a robot whose programming was based on his own brain waves, had become a genocidal monster. Later on, Hank attacked an opponent who had already been defeated and so he was up for a court-martial from the Avengers. Hank was so desperate to stay with the team, which he was no convinced was the one good thing left in his life, that he concocted a plan to have a robot attack the team and then he'd save them all by deactivating it. But Jan found out and Hank, in his desperate and paranoid state, hit her when she came towards him and tried to stop him from turning on the robot. Hank's actions were discovered and so he left the Avengers and spent some time dealing with his misguided actions and re-asserting his sense of reality. Over the years, he made peace with the Avengers and regained his sense of identity and confidence and Jan forgave him for his break with reason and reality when he'd hit her, although he never really forgave himself.

Hank was a character that it seemed like Marvel didn't know what to do with and I feel that the hitting of Janet Van Dyne was a poorly conceived solution to make him interesting or relevant to the team's drama again. But whether I think it was a good idea or not, it happened and the characters dealt with it and since then Hank was a stand-up guy. So yes, he hit her the one time while he was freaking out and having a "mental breakdown", and that's bad. But he was not a wife-beater who did this continually nor did he ever justify his action as something excusable nor did he ever do anything like that before or again in the near-50 years that he's been having adventures in comics books. As I said, he was a fun character when he was Ant-Man and since assuming the role of the Wasp, he has returned to being a very fun character.

Hank was a character that it seemed like Marvel didn’t know what to do with and I feel that the hitting of Janet Van Dyne was a poorly conceived solution to make him interesting or relevant to the team’s drama again. But whether I think it was a good idea or not, it happened and the characters dealt with it and since then Hank was a stand-up guy. So yes, he hit her the one time while he was freaking out and having a “mental breakdown”, and that’s bad. But he was not a wife-beater who did this continually nor did he ever justify his action as something excusable nor did he ever do anything like that before or again in the near-50 years that he’s been having adventures in comics books. As I said, he was a fun character when he was Ant-Man and since assuming the role of the Wasp, he has returned to being a very fun character.

I am not a big fan of the big W on all the wasps' costumes, reminds me too much of wonder woman. The W seems unneccessary since we know who the wasp is just by looking at her wings.

There was another Ant-Man costume in the 70's, which he wore during the Marvel Feature Ant-Man stories. I think it was just a red shirt and white leggings, though I'm probably missing most of the details.

And Hank was never a drunk. He hit Jan once back in, like, 1981. He spent the next 20 years redeeming himself for it, and had succeeded. Then Chuck Austen dragged it all back to the surface in his seven issue travesty of an Avengers run, and since then no one seems willing to leave it alone.

"Marvel doesn’t seem to enforce style guides at all any more, do they?"

not really. it's probably a good thing, lets artists have a lot more freedom.

its pretty stupid that they're already getting rid of the wasp costume for hank, which is a thousand times better than his ant man/giant man crap

I'm surprised that you missed Hank's Ant-Man costume from the early 70's, when he starred in Marvel Feature. As comprehensive as these (always delightful) articles usually are, that's a particularly glaring omission.
I'm also surprised to see that the current Wasp costume has already been tinkered with. Marvel doesn't seem to enforce style guides at all any more, do they?

Isn't Hank Pym the boozing wife-beater of The Marvel Universe? (It's a serious question, seriously asked. I don't read this stuff, but, for some reason, that's the idea I have in my head.)

"Fun" was used an awful lot of times in those first few paragraphs to describe a wife beater.

MARTIN GRAY: I'm not saying he doesn't look like a superhero. Of course, he looks like a superhero. That's what he is and I say in several parts that what he's wearing counts as a costume. I was just saying he's utilitarian as far as hero designs can go. And the gloves are zig-zagged, but they don't have scallops like Batman.

Maybe we're talking about different looks Alan, but the bit I quoted is under the 'It's the Cyclops!' panel. There's no way anyone would look at that pic of Hank and not thing 'superhero'. And while no flaring, those gloves are scalloped!

A cape's hardly the trademark of heroes in the Marvel U - Hank fits right in.

MARTIN GRAY: It's utilitarian in that it's simply a shirt, pants, belt and helmet. There's no cape, no wrist bands, no belts around the thighs or pouches around the chest, no shoulder pads, no scalloped gloves.

Loved the wasp article. She is a character that was made for an agent of style colum. Can't wait for one on the many identities of Hank Pym.

Wonderful piece, sir. I love Hank's original look, of which you wrote:

'But the rest of this suit is pretty utilitarian actually, which makes sense for a guy who’s more scientist than superhero.'

I don't see how his zig-zaggy, red and blue/black skintight outfight is anymore utilitarian than any other superhero costume - he looks exactly like a superhero. To my mind, the minute you put on something like that, you're at least as much superhero as anything else. Hey ho.

As for Jan, my favourite of her modes is also the glittering Buscema outfit - pretty. Well, that and her original, which is, to say the least, unique. The skullcap look is a hoot, a hymn to Miss America.

I'm amazed by some of the looks you love - I've never come across anyone who didn't regard the one-legged Perez ... thing as a joke meant to show Jan is a lousy designer. Alan, it has one leg! There's assymetrical and then there appalling. You nutty New York style bod, you.

Anyway, look forward to the various Goliaths - my vote goes to Clint Barton circa Avengers #63, the blue number - powerful, well-coloured and sexy.

Eric didn't just get her to go to dinner with him, he got her to pick up the tab by saying he didn't have any place to carry cash in his costume!

And it looked like Secret War era Jan got the idea for the green and purple outfit from the Molecule Man. They could be twins.
