Check out the first footage of GREEN LANTERN

November 12th, 2010
Author David Pepose

Curious about Ryan Reynolds? Curious about that CG costume?

Then check this out for size — the Daily BLAM has an early promo from Entertainment Tonight, with the Green Lantern suit, Kilowog, Carol Ferris, and a whole lot more:

What say you, Rama readers? You dig what you see? Think Hal’s ready for the big screen? Or do you feel GL is running low on energy? Sound off!

  1. Seth Kaplan Says:

    This. Looks. Awesome!!!!

  2. SonofBaldwin Says:

I’m sensing an Iron Man rip-off only with cheesier special effects.

    Yikes! I expected better.

  3. Poe Says:

God, that looks bad. Like B-movie level bad.

  4. Kel-El Says:

    Looks fantastic!

  5. Gasser Says:

THE Green Lantern? Can’t they read the title of the movie? And who’s the nerdy guy with Hal? Did they replace Thomas Kalmaku?

  6. Poe Says:

I think that’s supposed to be Kalmaku. Unless they created a new character. Wouldn’t surprise me.

  7. vanillabear Says:

this looks really bad, i was hoping for so much better

  8. rick Says:

Hmmm. Hard to tell with the youtube quality video. I hope there’s still some tweaking to be done on the effects. Looked a little cartoony.

  9. comic_dude Says:

Can anything save this turkey?!!! xD

  10. Grez10 Says:

I won’t judge until I see it. So far not feeling Reynolds as Hal Jordan

  11. CTHE3 Says:

I think the the nerdy guy is Hal’s younger brother James. He wears glasses in the comics and knows Hal’s secret indentity.

  12. Mou101 Says:

Looks terrific! Can’t wait to see the final product!

  13. Toythinker Says:

Uh…that didn’t look that great…no epic shots…no, WOW! scenes that set it apart from anything else I’ve seen before…I’m smelling dud on this one…and I’m a HUGE DC fan…!

  14. Alan Barnes Says:

Oh boy…well at least it looks like the Deadpool movie won’t get held up by a Green Lantern sequel

  15. CaptObtuse Says:

Oh my God. “Epic shots”? It’s not a trailer. It’s just the first publicly released footage. Probably some of the first that FX has finished production on. You know how I know? Because of the big headline that says “first footage”. But, you know, don’t let the facts get in the way of condemning something which you don’t know anything about. For me, that shot of Kilowog and Hal is straight cash, homey.

  16. Crusader k Says:

It llooks to me that the costume now looks closer to what’s in the book.

  17. Poe Says:

The suit almost looks closer to the design Jim Lee gave to Kyle Rayner’s costume rather than Hal’s normal uniform.

  18. Burntredwaffle Says:

    “I know, right?”
“Lets get these pants off and fly some planes”

    FX can’t redeem crappy dialog.

  19. Artiepants Says:

I REALLY want this to be good, but every new reveal (except for the Oa concept art) just looks worse and worse…

  20. NeoSamurai Says:

I really don’t like the muscle striations for the suit. Why couldn’t they have just gone with bright light/glowing green and space black for the suit. or even go for the sigil projection of the emblem.

of course, the suit might prove better for 3d.

  21. LegionLover Says:

The goofy charm of Ryan Reynolds just doesn’t read “Hal” too me. Of everyone in the DCU, Hal takes himself almost as seriously as Bruce, and I could never see Reynolds as Batman. I like Ryan Reynolds, I just always thought he was miscast in this and this early footage seems to support that. I don’t care about the level of the effects (and, yes, effects houses will still be working months on this), it’s the non-effects scenes I’m not getting. Burntredwaffle is right. FX can’t redeem crappy dialog.

  22. Michael Cross Says:

This looks horrid, and campy as hell! Guess they want to ruin GL also and make him into some comedic retard like they did with Tony Stark in Iron Man (moreso in Iron Man 2). Comedy Hollywood trash means there’s no way in hell I will be watching or supporting this film in any way. What I saw in that 30-second clip is NOT Green Lantern. What pisses me off is that the idiotic masses will LOVE this movie and it will make billions! But it’s not Green Lantern. I will only watch a GL movie whenever someone is actually serious about making one, and by that, I mean the film should be serious, treat its characters seriously, and they should act in character.

  23. toiletries Says:

    this looks so corny.

  24. magruber Says:

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand sombody presses the flush button on my hype for this.

  25. Kevin Says:

Dear God in Heaven people, you are already declaring it a failure from ET FOOTAGE!

AND YOU WONDER WHY PEOPLE CALL FAN BOYS ALL THE NASTY LITTLE NAMES THEY DO?!?!?!?!

Now, I’m not saying that you should be declaring it the second coming of Christ. I am saying that you should realize that these are released shots, from a film due out in over 6 months. Dialouge you can’t judge either…not in context. And besides, Hal is not Batman. He is snarky, he is a horn dog.

Personally, I liked it. But I am not ready to begin claiming this is amazing or it will sell millions. But it is alot better than all of you that are screaming foul…80% doing it most liekly because everyone else is.

    GET….A…GRIP.

You want to say you don’t like what you see. Fine. Do that. But as a rational adult, not like a 2 year old. And also keep your argument in context, for Pete’s sake. It is a youtube video… of a promo…for the first look…at footage…from a tabloid news show. That’s 6 degrees of separation for the film.

  26. Don Winslow Says:

It’s footage from the movie, that happens to look horrid. Two degrees, one, six, it still looks like crap.

Ryan Reynolds, the quirky, funny Van Wilder, as a serious minded military pilot? Yeah, doesn’t work for me.

I love Martin Campbell, Casino Royale was badass, but…damn, this looks disappointing.

  27. rtc2i Says:

    @LegionLover
I don’t really think of Hal as a serious character like Bruce. For Bruce it’s all business all the time. Hal has a great deal more humor to him than Bruce does. Of course I am referencing the Post-Rebirth Hal. I’m not saying that there aren’t serious moments, but when there’s not a great deal of trouble, Hal is a rather comedic character. With that being said, I do agree that something seemed off in the clips we just saw. It feels more like Kyle right now than it does Hal.

As for the footage, I think the suit looks better than the first image we got from the magazine. I’m going to wait until I see it on the big screen before I make any serious condemnation on the suit.

  28. SAMURAI36 Says:

    @ Kevin:

    Finally, a voice of reason!!

It pains me to even be remotely associated with these comic nerds, simply because I happen to read comics.

Oh my freakin’ god, when will you nerds wake up and realize that they simply can’t make a comic movie that’s 100% source-accurate? With all the money they pump into these films, it’s clear that they are aiming at a much wider audience than all 20 of you nerds who have a narrow view of how the movies should be.

If they catered only to the comic crowd, the truth is, these movies would never be seen, let alone get made.

  29. Hal Hefner Says:

@Kevin. LMFAO I think you popped a couple of veins in your head. You sound like just as much of a weenis as everyone you’re calling out and ripping on. Here’s a hug big guy, sounds like you need one. I saw some good and bad. Bad writing, some bad FX but some good too. Killowog looks pretty cool at least. GL is a tough one to pull off on the bigscreen. Sweet jumpin mother of heavenly Jesus!

  30. Kevin Says:

    @Don.

Again…it is 5 second clips, taken out of context (not even put together by the studio or the director, but by ET!) that was recorded from a TV and put on Youtube. It isn’t even the segment…it is a promo for the segment.

You can dislike it, that’s fine. But again…KEEP..IT…IN…PERSPECTIVE.

And before anyone jumps on me, i will say the exact same thing to any one that says, “OH MY GOD, THAT WAS AMAZING! THIS WILL BE BETTER THAN THE DARK KNIGHT! IRON MAN PWNED!”

Until you are in the theater and have seen the entire thing, you can not claim you know the fate of the movie, good or bad. You can only judge the clips, and your statements should be only about the clips.

You can say, “Wow, that line sounds bad.” or “Yuck, I don’t like the costume in that moment at 53 seconds.”

But you can’t claim you know the film is going to be garbage, or a rip off, or that it is doomed to fail now. Just like you can’t claim it is golden or going to be the best movie ever.

Doing so makes you not only look incredibly judgmental and narrow minded…it makes you look stupid. (Not that you are…just like the clip, I can’t judge you as a person purely by reading one post you make. ;) )

  31. Kevin Says:

    @Hal

Yeah, I did. But I am sick of people reacting like this to everything. I saw the same thing happen with the Star Trek Trailer (OMG! ITS LIKE DAWSONS’ CREEK IN SPACE! THE MOVIE IS GOING TO BLOW! THAT LITTLE KID IS AN IDIOT, HE SAID SIBERIOUS INSTEAD OF TIBERIOUS! I HEARD IT CLEARLY, YOU CAN’T, BUT I DID!)

Heck…anyone remember a little movie called Spider-Man? And I quote: Organic webshooters!?!? That isn’t my Spider-Man! This movie will blow.

Or…”The Joker’s makeup is makeup!? It’s suppose to be caused by chemicals! This movie is going to suck! And why cast Heath Ledger, he should go back to making teen flicks!”

  32. Gasser Says:

Kevin, your fanboy tantrum doesn’t detract from the facts that these clips look amateurish (not in video quality) and uninspired. This is an extreme situation where the look of the movie is key. Therefore, it is entirely to be expected that fans would be devastated at what the studio thought to be the best shots to introduce this movie to the public at large. Don’t blame the fans that the movie looks like shit.

  33. Kevin Says:

And I am not blaming you for your opinion, Gasser. All I am saying is that the comic community has a long, sad history of going nuts over things, then suddenly growing silent when the film does billions. Keep it in perspective. They are first looks…

The trailer looks like this, then yes, I will be with you 100% in being worried. And if the film is like this, I will be with you in hating it. But intill then, I am not going to be making myself a prophet, like so many are, in claiming the film is ruined. Because this has happened before, and in the end it makes the comic community look like fools when we get it wrong.

  34. Arnoldoaad Says:

    I think it looks good

  35. AJ Says:

Well, since the full trailer is due with the next Harry Potter film (opening in one week) it’s a safe bet to say that all of this footage was cribbed from said trailer. It’ll be interesting to see if EW shows the full trailer on Tuesday or just some scattered shots from it with interviews from the cast.

Personally, what I see reminds me most of the “Fantastic Four” films… Kind of sitcomy with an artificial look to the world. However, since this film can’t possibly screw up Doctor Doom to the extent those films did, then there’s still a chance this one could be good.

  36. comic_dude Says:

I’ll reserve judgment on this until I see what was done with the portrayal of the villains like Sinestro and Hector Hammond. ;-)

  37. Excelsior Says:

    Oh, frak me…

Apart from the really, really cheap looking special effects, the corny attempts at ‘humour’ just make me cringe – it’s looking ‘Fantastic Four’ levels of awful. And I’m not even going to bother feining surprise that it’s just Ryan Reynold doing his usual wiseass schtick, same as he does in EVERY other smegging movie he’s ever in…

To hell with it – it’s going to make money regardless, and all the self-flagellating nerds out there will still fall overthemselves in their need to gush how ‘faithful’ it is to the books, just to keep up with the crowd. No thanks – better to write it off, ignore it, and dust off the old Gil Kane-drawn classics. Y’know, the ones with ‘Green Lantern’ actually in them? :p

  38. nathanfromseattle Says:

Why why WHY such low-res video? I can barely see any detail. This won’t win anyone over, just scare them away.

  39. Excelsior Says:

@Kevin – while I agree with your logic, I can’t help but disagree with your choices of films to make your point:

Star Trek – mean-spirited piss-take of the original. Dumb movie that panders to it’s audience, hoping they don’t notice the gaping holes in plot logic and the tissue paper-thing characterisation.

    Spider-Man – see above.

The Dark Night – and again…

  40. Alex T Says:

I liked everything but the CGI suit so far. It just looked too cartoony. I’m sure they’ll continue to tweak it as they go along, but I wish they went for an actual, practical, physical costume.

  41. Unit99 Says:

OK I’ll admit I’m a little worried, however I was also worried about 2008 The Incredible Hulk but ended up really enjoying that film once I saw it in person. So I will reserve final judgment after seeing the full trailer. BTW: Folks…us fan boys also believed Ledger would suck as the Joker! Also 4 those of u that want Hal to be a serious character….Hal has never supposed to have been! Non of the GL are like Batman! So wise up! And freaking read a GL comic book!

  42. OtisTFirefly Says:

    @Excelsior
While you may not like Star Trek, Spiderman or the Dark Knight, they were VERY well regarded by the fanboys and even the public in general. I think Kevin’s point is totally valid.

    @Kevin
In spite of the whining anti-Kevin geeks, THANK YOU for, again, being the voice of reason. You’ve got probably 30 Marvel Zombies on here blathering that it looks horrid, needs “flushing”, etc etc just because it’s a DC movie.

As for the effects, what the hell is wrong with them? You’re seeing them on a 2″ screen, 2 seconds at at time, and yet most everyone seems to say how crappy and ungodly awful they are. Can’t see Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern? From a sub-1minute ET tonight video (which, as with all things ET, is more about promoting ET than anything else)? Shall we AAAALLLL go back and look at the reaction to ROBERT DOWNEY JR. as IRON MAN?? Oh, Lord help us all…. worst casting in history….too old…and ON AND ON AND ON and ON! Now, of course, most of you same geekboy idiots are saying “Well, I KNEW HE’D BE GREAT ALL ALONG!! YESSIR, ONLY I SAW THE POTENTIAL!!!”

Gads… what a bunch of would-be movie critics… the main objective is to be FIRST in saying how awful something is, based on a freakin’ still picture, or, more likely, the announcement the damn thing would be made in the first place… which, of course, is when you decided that it LOOKS AWFUL and THE SPECIAL EFFECTS SUCK!!!

  43. Victor Says:

From what was shown you really can’t tell if the movie is a hit or a dud. The effects looked pretty good. But the writing in these scenes was kinda lame.

If the rest of the movie is like the clip, we should worry. I know Reynolds likes to crack jokes, but Hal is not a kidder. He’s one of the most serios guys in the DCU.

Still, it’s only a 15 second clip so I’ll save my opinion for after the first viewing of the whole shebang.

  44. lightspec Says:

Never knew Hal jokes all the time….? Kinda off in that regard. Then again, mebbe those were the only scenes shot at the moment. He has to be effin serious other than those scenes. Carrol is HoT though..!!!

  45. Krysmo Says:

well said Kevin. Don’t people also realize that promo footage like this (and on many trailers) contain different takes than the ones seen in a final film?? Dialogue delivery may be different, lines may be different, etc. Anyone who looks at this 10 second sampler and says the film will suck is completely out of their minds or a troll. Who knows what it’ll be like – I’m hoping it’s good, just as I hope all comic book movies are going to be good.

  46. Claudio Pozas Says:

Hal? Serious? This is the guy that whistles “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” while flying to battle Brother Eye. The guy who one-lines the likes of Lobo and Sinestro!

And really, this was edited by the ET crew. And they felt the need to put “Blake Lively, from Gossip Girl” before the actual movie star, to appeal to their audience. So I guess they were going for the lowest common denominator.

  47. Jayded1 Says:

Looks great. I am so glad they are keeping to the spirit of the original GL which had a lot of humor.

  48. gene Says:

It’ll be interesting to see a cosmic superhero on the big screen, since most of these movies stay on Earth. Space fights are half the fun.

  49. Yul Says:

Guys, can you honestly say that you saw the whole preview in a few clips? Stop being judgmental for a minute. It’s 32 seconds and not even 32 seconds of the trailer. ET hasn’t shown the good stuff yet. How about giving it a chance before trashing it?

  50. gene Says:

I have some questions, however. Why the cg suit? Striated or not, did they have to make it cg? If so, then why not go all the way and make his head cg as well? Maybe there’s some technical reason I’m not aware of.

  51. Flinstone Says:

I’ll reserve final judgement until I see the trailer on the big screen or in HD. But it looks a fun, family film.

And the only comparisons to Iron Man I can see is that they are fitting the character to the actor’s personality and not the other way around. Reynolds and Downey Jnr are very charismatic actors, but limited in their acting ability – all their characters are just variations on themselves. And that’s just an observation – not a criticism.

  52. Shaun Says:

I want to like the GL movie, and I think it’s too soon to judge, but my expectations are definitely LOWERED – big time – after seeing this.

I wanted to think Reynolds would be good, but now I find myself wishing for Fillion or Boreanz all over again. Reynolds is acting more like Guy Gardner than Hal Jordan.

The CGI suit looks just as ridiculous as it did on the EW cover a few months back. They need to rethink that whole thing, and fast.

I’ll say this much for it… Oa and Kilowog look great. So it’s got that going for it. I just hope there’s better footage coming down the pike. Seems to me that WB will want to have a trailer ready for the Harry Potter movie next weekend, so maybe we’ll get a better idea after that?

Please WB, don’t mess this up. Looks like you’re going for an Iron Man vibe here, but that’s not who GL is.

  53. Shaun Says:

@ Excelsior: Sure, The Dark KNIGHT was “stupid”… So stupid it was nearly universally acclaimed by the critics, considered a serious Oscar contender that year (and cited as the primary reason why the Academy expanded the number of films nominated after it got snubbed), and it went on to be one of the biggest hits in movie history.

It’s fine if you didn’t like it. But you’re clearly in the minority with your opinion. That’s also true about Spider-Man (the first two movies in the series, at least) and Star Trek.

Truthfully, I agree with you about the Trek movie. I thought it ridiculous. But I also understand that my view is not prevailing one.

  54. Letterman23 Says:

    A) I’m worried about the movie. The CGI just looks fake.

    B) I read the comments to get Newsarama readers’ takes on the article. What did I get from these comments? Several people who share my worries, a few who are still very excited, and SPLAT!, some dude named Kevin crashing into the middle of the conversation to condemn anyone who responded in (his definition of) the wrong way. Kevin, this footage was released to create excitement and a reaction. Please let that happen. I would like to see what people think of the clip, rather than see their debate regarding how you say that they should think about the clip.

  55. Skott Says:

Just put it out on BetaMax with Thor, Captain America, Ghost Rider 2 and The Avengers so we can move on.

  56. EndlessKng Says:

Flight stuff look a little cheesy at first glance. That said, the only construct I noticed was that fist thing right after the Ferris Air sign fell.
And that part looked good. He moves his hand, and the ring makes a fist to punch people out of the way. Not that there would’ve been anything wrong with him creating a hammer or some such, but that particular bit looked interesting.

I’m reserving any further judgment until I see the trailer, though. But I’m personally not thinking this is going to suck.

  57. Harlock999 Says:

As a film fan (not a comics nerd), I have to admit these initial scenes looks really cheesy.

The outfit looks fine, the flying looks fine, and the ring effect looks fine. And Kilowog looks really good, actually.

But the dialogue? And the way these bits are put together? Well, it makes this film look to be a goofy and forgettable “we’re not taking this stuff too seriously” (unlike, say, Batman Begins and Dark Knight) superhero slugfest.

My guess is it will do great in its first week, but trail off pretty fast after that. In fact, the kiddies might just be the ones to save this one … that is, if the merchandising catches on (alien action figures and whatnot) as well as the planned CGI cartoon.

However, I just can’t see this one becoming a favorite with the adult action-oriented crowd.

  58. ANTHONY Says:

    @ EXCELSIOR

You’re a loser. The Dark Knight was amazing as was Star Trek. Get a life douchebag.

  59. LegsDiamond5 Says:

I disagree with OtisTfirefly. I’m collect mostly Marvel but that doesn’t mean I’m not rooting for this movie to succeed. Just as I rooted for the Batman movies, Watchmen, and The Losers to be successful. Anyone who roots against a comic movie because they dislike the company (Marvel, DC, Image etc) is missing the point. The more these movies do well, the more we will see them being made. The more comic book movie flops you see will make Hollywood antsy about producing them and they will put their focus more on pretty teen vampire flicks. Unlike other established movie genres like romantic comedies, horror, and drama, comic book movies are on a shorter leash.

  60. Cæu Says:

    Thank You Notes

Thank you Newsarama, for giving us a heads-up on publicity for next years’ GL movie. Still one of the best places to go for comics news.

Thank you ET, for sensationalizing the movie to a point where those of us with Attention Deficit Disorders can feel at home. So little time to misunderstand so much.

Thank you ‘Rama posters, for supplying the instant knee-jerk negative reaction. I can always count on you. Never change.

  61. DaVeO Says:

This footage just makes me want to see an actual trailer more. Thsi footage is poor to judge the quality of the whole film. Unless you are into snap judgments which most of you are it seems.

  62. brian Says:

did look pretty bad effects wise, like 80′s type. i like the guy who told the other poster to get a life, because he didn’t like his favorite super-hero movie though.

  63. electr1cgoblin Says:

The effects don’t bother me as much as the dialog. It’s early, so you really shouldn’t make a judgment, but I’m worried about the tone…a lot.

And like others, I do like Reynolds but think he’s not quite right for the role. I think Matthew Fox would be much better.

  64. Gwarshow Says:

Come on! This is literally 30 seconds of random shots. I think the suit looks a hell of a lot better than what was shown on the EW cover. And Killowog looks great. The effects on this are not bad. What are you comparing them to? And Jordan was an immature tool before he recieved and trained with the ring. And for all of you claiming “…and I’m a diehard DC fan”, these are NOT the comics. These are the movies. They HAVE to appeal to a wider audience to make money. And movies are nothing more than expensive commercials for the movie companies. IF you were DC fans, you’d wait to pass judgement until you see it. At least wait until they show more on Tuesday. What you see here is nothing more than a teaser for that. I really dislike it when people see 30 seconds, or less (or even test footage), and immediately start slamming the project. These people put a lot of time into this GL film, give them the benefit of the doubt. Ryan Reynolds is good in everything I’ve seen him in – he’s a highly underrated actor. And this has already been greenlit to start production on GL2 and GL3 (last I read), so it must be worthy of them, in their eyes at least. If you saw early footage of Star Wars in 77, you’d be doing the same thing: “Oh that looks so fake! That couldn’t happen! There’s no sound in space!” Just give it a chance to prove it looks crappy – 30 seconds isn’t enough of a clip to decide this. From what I have seen of the character designs of Sinestro, Killawog, Salaak, B’zzt, Tomar Re, etc…this should be a damn good/fun movie. Quite possibly this decade’s Star Wars/LOTR. Give it a chance. If it’s bad when I see it, I’ll be the first to say how bad it was. But I won’t pass judgement until then.

  65. Kevin Says:

    @Letterman23

Wow, I have a power that has caused people to stop giving knee jerk reactions to this footage? That is so cool!

In seriousness, you will notice I only singled out one person, and I did not go and attack him or anything. And you will also notice that I have not attacked anyone below my posts who have stated their dislike of the footage…because, as you can see from reading them, they are for the most part focused on the footage, not trumpeting that the movie is now doomed.

I am all for complaints. You will see I was the first to knock JMS for leaving Superman and Wonder Woman when the news broke here. What I did here was say that we should keep this in perspective. This isn’t like viewing the trailer, made by the director himself, and going, “God, that sucked.” It was a promo for a first look segment on a tabloid show. That’s like saying I can judge who you are based on a single post you make on a message board (If I did have to judge you on that, I would say you had a good level of maturity when it came to your reaction).

Over on other boards, they are eating this up with a spoon. “The suit is amazing!” “The CGI looks great!” “THe best part was the take off these pants line!” (these aren’t word for word quotes, but close). I haven’t commented there yet, but if I hear one person proclaim this to be the next The Dark Knight, I will post the same comments there that I did here…that you can’t judge a film based on a grainy 1 minute promo clip.

  66. Gwarshow Says:

I thinkn the costume looks like GL’s current one. Kind of hard to tell here, though.

  67. Gwarshow Says:

    @Kevin

Well said. That footage is just the teaser for Tuesday. Should get a better look then. The trailer is supposed to be shown with Harry Potter anyway (unless that plan changed), so that will be out for all soon enough.

  68. Kyle Baker Says:

The thing about effects-heavy films is that the best WOW shots are the ones which take the longest to execute. Usually these kinds of films are still being edited days before release. I’ve worked on movies and seen the rough cuts of works in progress, and there’s really no way to tell what’s going to happen. I remember watching an early version of Scooby-Doo, and often the dog was just a storyboard drawing. I did a little bit of work with DC for this GL movie, and I have seen some breathtaking shots of alien worlds, cool spaceships and alien monsters. But that stuff’s going to take months to render and edit.

  69. Kevin Says:

    @Gwarshow

Now, if the trailer is as choppy and silly as this promo was…then yeah,I will be INCREDIBLY worried. But even then, I won’t write off the movie 100% until I see it. I’ve taken too much joy in rubbing it in the faces of my friends who did that with The Dark Knight, Spider-Man, and X-Men (Hugh Jackman…he’s a tall pretty boy! He can’t be Logan!) to have it happen to me.

Victor Says: I know Reynolds likes to crack jokes, but Hal is not a kidder. He’s one of the most serios guys in the DCU.

Don Winslow Says: Ryan Reynolds, the quirky, funny Van Wilder, as a serious minded military pilot? Yeah, doesn’t work for me.

A “serious minded military pilot”? You mean like Maverick and Goose in Top-Gun? Or do you mean serious like Gordon Cooper as seen in The Right Stuff? Or Mel Gibson’s character in Air America? Test pilot Howard Hughes in the beginning of The Aviator?

Did any of you even read Emerald Dawn? The Secret Origins arc by Geoff Johns in the monthly Green Lantern title? New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke? This movie would take place before Hal became a more experienced interstellar peace officer. The depiction as devil-may-care test pilot and fighter jock is very consistent with his depiction in current continuity.

Unit99 Says: So I will reserve final judgment after seeing the full trailer.

How about reserving judgment until you’ve actually seen the film?

Flinstone Says: Reynolds and Downey Jnr are very charismatic actors, but limited in their acting ability – all their characters are just variations on themselves. And that’s just an observation – not a criticism.

You mean 2 time Academy Award nominee Robert Downey Jr.? Golden Globe and BAFTA award winner Robert Downey Jr.? That Robert Downey Jr. is limited in his acting ability? His characters are variations on himself? Is he Paul Avery from Zodiac? Kirk Lazarus from Tropic Thunder? Steve Lopez from the Soloist? Or is he Sherlock Holmes?

  73. Kevin Says:

No…he’s the dude playing a dude disguised as another dude!

  74. AJ Says:

“How about reserving judgment until you’ve actually seen the film?”

I’m willing to do this if I’m getting to see the film for free, and I have the time to kill. Until then, studios will still have to put some effort into convincing me that their films are worth both my money and time.

Like others, I’ll reserve forming my first impressions until I see the actual trailer. If it leaves the same impression as this teaser, though, they’ll have to work to convince me to see this next year.

  75. Skott Says:

I love the people who try to tell us to chill “it’s the movie not the comic” like THAT means anything. If it wasn’t for the comics there wouldn’t be a movie so why not actually take more from the comics instead of making Kilowog look like a shaved mutant poodle. This is why I walked away from Marvel and DC live action movies after Iron Man.
Let’s just stick with animated or even computer animation and stop these lame looking movies.
I think it’s funny how you have to go to lesser known independent comics to get movies that actually respect the source material AND the fans.

  76. GTode Says:

I like the sight of Ryan Reynolds in his tighty whities – Hal’s a fan of briefs!

And that I think is a very reasonable position. I’m with Kevin though, I don’t understand these people who are ready to pass judgment on a film which hasn’t even been completed based on a few seconds of early footage. For all we know, the lines that some find offensive won’t even make the release and will be relegated to extras on the DVD.

Skott Says: Let’s just stick with animated or even computer animation and stop these lame looking movies.

Or…let’s keep making live-action movies for people who enjoy them, and you can continue to enjoy the animated films. Everybody wins!

    Hahaahaha!

All this drama coming from a community that pooped on Heath Ledger as the Joker. Remember all the Brokeback Batman jokes that went around here, and how utterly foolish most fanboys looked with egg on their face?

Yep, that’s what I’m getting here.

Guys, it’s just a bit of ET Footage. A movie can’t be judged on 1-2 minutes of footage. And for gods sake stop being so precious, have you ever talked to anyone who reads books and tells you about how the movie doesn’t live up to the book, well guess what, that’s the same situation with comics / graphic novels too. Let’s just hope for good movies rather than perfect adaptations. Let’s face it the best comic based movies of all time have been loose adaptations or original stories rather than transcribing comic stories. So let’s see how the lantern does when it shines for an hour and a half and not just a minute.

  84. Batfan86 Says:

    Looks great so far!

    Kevin is the man.

Hal is not a stone-cold serious character. Reynolds will be great.

  85. Kel-El Says:

I don’t get how people can judge a movie as huge in scope as Green Lantern based on a 30 second clip from Entertainment Tonight, who, by the by, have been known to string safe clips together for their family-friendly show, hence, no dead aliens laying around at Project Cadmus.

  86. OtisTFirefly Says:

    @ LegsDiamond5

Didn’t mean to imply ALL Marvel readers are Zombies…. but a hell of a lot of them are. Many more of those than people that blindly follow/buy/read EVERY title DC puts out and declares them all to be the greatest thing since man milked his first cow.

  87. Kel-El Says:

I guess Marvel Zombies are like Republicans.
    Oh! Yeah, I did.

  88. Danielle Ni Dhighe Says:

The few glimpses of Ryan Reynolds in character in this clip have dampened my optimism a bit. It’s not even a trailer, so it’s hard to judge anything, but one “I know, right?” and I wasn’t seeing Hal Jordan at all. I was seeing Reynolds from any of the comedies he’s made.

  89. Michael Says:

    Better then TDK

  90. xanthiss Says:

I am more pissed off about the poor web design that puts the ad windows right in the viewing window of the clip. I mean come on we know the ads are there guys back off a bit.

Someone was actually pissed that JMS is leaving Superman and Wonder Woman? Thanks for clarifying your view of quality.

  93. mic Says:

hes not very Hal Jordan.. and im not that big a GL fan but its more like a comedy with special effects.

  94. Cult of Larfleeze Says:

Looks great to me so far, here’s hoping no one is dissuaded by all the geekrage that will eventually come when comic book fans get mad that the movie wasn’t made for them and their fat nerd brethren.

Also, Larfleeze wants his own movie.

  95. JSC Says:

It looks awesome to me I can’t wait for this. Ryan Reynolds totally gives me the feeling of Hal and they definitely picked the right person here. And the Special Effects look amazing!

Nice to see you’re still a fan even after Downey Jnr took out that restraining order on you.

And that’s a lot of question marks – you’ve used up your yearly quota!! Or have you? :)

  97. Bucky7588 Says:

GL is my favorite comic character, and I didn’t think this was that bad. The effects look…unfinished. Is it possible they still have touch ups to make on these things like the suit and whatnot? Maybe they just wanted to start buzz and have work left to do. I don’t know about these types of things.

  98. Bucky7588 Says:

Let me be more specific, I thought the trailer was awesome, but in the scene when he puts his uniform on (if thats what you want to call it) it looks like it hasn’t been fully colored and textured

  99. CaptObtuse Says:

@Flinstone Have I used my quota of question marks? What kind of question is that? Is there a limit? And what’s this about a restraining order? Am I a stalker? Or did I just do some quick research on IMDB? And why aren’t you being snarky or petty or mean-spirited like so many others on the Internet? How can I look down my nose at you if you’re going to respond with a sense of humor????? (Thanks. I really appreciated your response. :) )

  100. The Zug Says:

    Hurm.

Would like to see footage that made Warner execs order production of two sequels.

Recent Warner track record not good. Christopher Nolan sole exception.

Disaster on this scale will put DC Entertainment in jeopardy. Sell DC properties to Disney to recover. Disney merges DC and Marvel. Pixar makes Superman movie. Everyone happy.

  101. Charlie Says:

    This looked like crap.

  102. NBM05 Says:

    Excelsior–

You didn’t like the first Spider-man, The Dark Knight, or Star Trek?

Those are some well loved, well received movies–both by critics and fans.

I’m not sure genre films are made for you if you didn’t like any of those movies.

  103. NBM05 Says:

    Kevin,

    I agree with you completely.

Fanboys often seem far more likely to hate the things they should like than anyone else because they have such a narrow view of how things should be, and they are unbelievably quick to judge.

Not only judging an entire movie based on a fifteen second promo of a promo featuring CGI that is not yet complete for a movie that is still being worked on and won’t come out for six or seven months, but claiming to know the quality of the whole movie (including effects, dialogue, and writing) is ridiculous.

It’s like going to a book store, randomly opening a nine hundred page book to three different locations, reading a paragraph or a line of dialogue from each of those three pages, then claiming you can talk accurately about the whole book.

Despite what some other posters have written, I by no means consider your reasoned arguments to assess the material being presented for what it is and to wait to judge the whole movie to be in any way the same as the knee-jerk reactions of the doomsayers.

Personally I love comic movies. I want them to be good, I want them to be accurate, and I want them to capture the spirit of the character and stories as much as possible. And that’s the direction the movies seem to be going. With Marvel and DC more hands-on than ever and with studios realizing how much they stand to make by taking these movies seriously, I think it’s a great time to be a comic (and comic movie) fan.

  104. NBM05 Says:

    Captobtuse–

Well said, well reasoned, and even well supported arguments.

Hal (at least since Geoff Johns started writing GL six or so years ago) has been a fun loving, hot headed, dare-devil horn-dog. He’s driven, competitive, and stubborn, but he cracks jokes and has fun. I’m not sure where all the “Hal is serious like Batman” comes from.

Your comments on test pilots as well as the acting abilities of Downey are hard to argue with.

  105. Catman Says:

Warner Bros. needs to learn how to promote a movie.

First they release an unfinished picture of the “Hal” in costume so they have something to show at the San Diago ComicCon and now they put out a mash-up trailer (probably rushed so they have something to attach to the new “Harry Potter” movie).

Rushing pieces out like this builds a lot of negative publicity, as shown here.

One thing I hope they adjust is the way “Hal” changes into costume. I think it should be a slower process so you can see a bit of what’s happening. The way it appears in the clip, it’s like he said a magic word and BAM, his cloths become a costume.

On a side note, I don’t know who is doing the woice for Kilowog, but I think Adam Baldwin (from Chuck) should be doing this role.

I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for this movie but my expectations keep dropping every time they release something about it. (not thrilled with the redesigned lanterns either)

dam those special effects are corny as all hell. When Ryan Reynolds has the mask over his eyes it just looks campy and stupid.

Oh well,Warner Bros always has Batman to fall back on at least.

  107. nillyville Says:

I expected a british narrator overshadowing the montage of extraordinary visual footage ala Lord of the rings. Just disappointed. This shouldnt be iron man. Instead of ryans quirky goofy voice ( i like him but not in this movie). That Hamm guy from Madmen would have been perfect.

  108. T Says:

those special effects look awful and hackneyed. someone please save DC’s characters from the Company itself

  109. Kevin Says:

    @nillyville

What? You wanted a British voiceover…for a promo for an ET spot?

Did you think this was the trailer? Because it ain’t.

  110. lightspec Says:

The scenes does look better in HD except Hal changing into the 3D costume while talking to his brother. Needs more work. ^_^

I think somebody misunderstood my reply earlier about Hal’s character. Oh well… never mind…

  111. jmskywalker76 Says:

As a longtime reader of GL, dating back to the late 80′s, my perspective on this clip is that it looks like crap. I have been less than pleased with anything I have seen from this movie, with the exception of the shot of Kilowog, which was excellent. I am a big fan of Ryan Reynold’s sarcastic humor and his timing of delivery. I thought he was an excellent choice for Deadpool and a horrible choice for Hal Jordan. He conversely would have been great as Kyle Rainer. I also like Martin Campbell as a director. I had fun with the Zorro movie’s and enjoyed Casino Royal. I want this movie to be great, my gut says that it won’t be. It’s really hard to gauge at this point, everything we’ve seen thus far has been still shots and production art work. This was the first footage and we are about a week away from the first trailer. Judging JUST from this footage though, there was a good deal, NOT to like.

  112. brett Says:

    Kevin,

If reading the anti-GL movie posts bother you so much, don’t read them. Because for someone who is so hot and bothered by the knee-jerk reactions that urk you so much, you’re sure reading and responding to a lot of them. You sound like the type of person who will put his hand in a fire on top of a stove then blame the manufacturer for burning your hand.

Because that’s what teasers are supposed to do. Drum up interest. Don’t blame the audience for not reacting how YOU think they should.

    Onto the clip:

I have been waiting for a Green Lantern movie since I was a kid. I want to say it looks good but the writing seems awful. The dialogue where Ryan turns into GL was really terrible writing. They seem like they’re going for a ‘Phantom’ or ‘Fantastic Four’ kind of feel, which is disappointing because Hal Jordan really is a heroic personality. He was chosen because he was a man without fear, not because he was Van Wilder. The drunk, jerk aspect of his personality was introduced in the terrible Emerald Dawn reboot of his origin and then made canon.

  113. Nate Says:

It looks pretty bad to me. Discounting the special effects (because they still have months to work on it), the design, characterization, and action all look/feel cheesy to me. A lot of it has to do with the fact that Ryan Reynolds personality and acting range is more suited for Wally West than for Hal Jordan. I’ll reserve judgment until it comes out, but my expectations just got lowered a lot. The action scenes should be good, at least.

  114. CaptObtuse Says:

    brett Says:

“If reading the anti-GL movie posts bother you so much, don’t read them…Don’t blame the audience for not reacting how YOU think they should.”

So if someone sees something that bothers them, say a politician trying to pass a law they don’t like, they shouldn’t say anything? What if someone’s making fun of my little brother with Down’s Syndrome? It bothers me so I should just turn away? The government is spending tax dollars in a way that bothers me, I shouldn’t say anything?

Kevin’s concern, and I agree with him, is that people are jumping to conclusions and passing judgment on a 2 hour film based on 30 seconds of footage. If you just saw 30 seconds of the cantina scene in Star Wars, you might think, “Huh. That look dumb. It looks like Cheers with aliens.” If all you’d seen of Die Hard was McClane arriving in LA and some scenes of the office party, you’d come away thinking it was some sort of Hallmark family Christmas movie. You can’t judge a book by its cover, and it’s not fair to judge a film by 30 seconds of unfinished footage that may or may not even make the final cut of the movie.

  115. brett Says:

    Obtuse,

Comparing politican’s passing laws/making fun of someone with Down’s Syndrome is quite a bit different than being offended by other people’s comments about a friggin’ 30 second movie trailer.

Trailer’s and teasers are released for a single purpose: to generate interest in something. They are specifically designed and released to create buzz and to get people talking. If people are talking about it negatively, it’s the fault of the production, not the audience.

If you or anyone else wants to get mad at other people because they didn’t like something, the problem is with you, not them.

And if reading about these comments gets you so hot and bothered, again don’t read them.

Didn’t your mother ever teach you not to put your hand in a pot of boiling water? You know the water in the pot is hot yet you put your hand in there anyway — yelling at the water for being hot is not going to make the water any less scalding… but yelling at it anyway makes you sound like a mental case.

  116. matt22 Says:

I can not beleive that people are saying that Hal is a serious character and even comparing him to Bruce. Really? Have you seen some his dialogue with Carol? The same goes for dialogue with Pieface, Guy, Ollie, Barry, and pretty much anyone he talks to. Hal loves his jokes and oneliners.Dont comment on characters unless you KNOW ABOUT THE CHARACTERS. As for the CGI, theres still months and months of tweaking to do. Remember how bad the CGI was in the leaked Wolverine film? Thats about where they are with the editing of the CGI in Green Lantern. Basically, chill till you see the finished product.

  117. Kevin Says:

    @brett

My mother taught me never to judge a book by its cover…or a movie by a 30 second clip.

  118. AeroRep Says:

God, the only thing I hate more than critics is apologists.

  119. CaptObtuse Says:

    @brett

I’m not mad, nor am I “hot and bothered.” What I am is curious. Why is it that you and others have the right to comment on the teaser footage, but you feel that Kevin and I don’t have the right to comment on the comments of others. If you don’t appreciate our views, don’t read them.
