The latest Spider-Man casting news/rumors, if you haven’t heard it already, comes from The Hollywood Reporter, saying Sally Field, seen above looking worried on her ABC series Brothers & Sisters, is in “early talks” to play Aunt May in 2012′s “reboot” film.
This follows the now-official news of Martin Sheen playing Uncle Ben, which was also first made public by the The Hollywood Reporter, so they clearly know a little something about the going-ons at that production.
If the casting pans out, it suggests that we may be seeing a bit of a younger, hipper, Ultimate Spider-Man-style Aunt May — Field turns 64 on Saturday, roughly a decade younger than Rosemary Harris, Aunt May in the previous Spider-Man trilogy, was when the original 2002 movie featuring the character came out.
We’ll probably see an official announcement one way or another soon, but until then, let us know what you think of the casting possibility in the comments. (Do you like it? Do you really like it? That’s actually a popular misquoting of her famous Oscar acceptance speech, but we’ll go with it anyway.)

She’s too young, and wrong for the part to boot. She’s also, honestly, too good an actress for what’s essentially a bit part.

I think it’s an inspired choice. Sally Field has a charm that, I feel, is very similar to a three-dimensional Aunt May like the one in Ultimate Spiderman. So, while I’d agree that Aunt May in the original Amazing Spiderman is a “bit part,” the Aunt May in Ultimate Spiderman is much more developed and central to the overall storyline.
Sally Field would also have enough gravitas to act opposite Martin Sheen’s Uncle Ben. If they go with her, I’d definitely have more faith in the reboot as something that is very different from the Raimi Spiderman and something that can offer a unique perspective on the Spiderman myth.

Max — we definitely don’t know at this point how big of a part Aunt May will play. Like Roger said, she could very well be an important piece, given how it’s approached.
Besides, her part in Forrest Gump really wasn’t that big, and it ended up rather memorable nonetheless.

I wish I was anything besides disinterested in the new spidey flick. None of the casting or director announcements to date have me as jacked as Sam Raimi and Toby MacGuire’s announcements did back in the day before Spidey 1. I’m dreading it will just be another “less-raimi” retelling of the origin. With Lizard as the villain. I’m boring myself typing this…

I wouldn’t mind seeing her as Aunt May =)

I like her, I really really like her.
…Sorry, someone had to say it.

Yeah screw Raimi’s Spider-Man. Just because it was successful doesn’t mean it was any good. In fact I think that whole trilogy was way overrated.

Effectively said, largely, but do not you feel as if the problem is a lot more complex than that?
