As for the 8th Doctor, he did sport a leather trench coat in te Lawrence Miles penned Eighth Doctor Adventure novel Interference. 8 also sported a dark red verion of the velvet frock coat in another EDA entitled History 101 plus a very yuppie-ish look (with the hair in ponytail form) in the critically acclaimed EDA Father Time

Almost half of these photos do indeed depict scenes that took place on other planets. But the fact is, MANY planets have trees or streets and humanoid figures so, like Star Trek, he went to a lot of places that didn’t seem too far removed from Earth. In the Classic series, the Doctor would sometimes spend an entire season only focused on alien worlds, but he often spoke of Earth as a favorite of his, a second home whose people he was fascinated by and often frustrated by. In the new series, nearly every adventure is on Earth, which has led to much debate among certain fans who want more universe hopping.

Is it a rule that all the actors who play him be so frumpy and hard on the eyes? Oh well; it is a British show.

And if he’s an alien who can travel time and space, why does it seem he spends most of the time on Earth? Or am I just misjudging by the photos?

Do remember that it was set in America. Don’t know why I can’t find it on Goggle. This was well before Christopher Eccleston did the first series for BBC. Mid-late 90′s, I think.

What are you talking about? There was no ABC movie version of Doctor Who.

Great article, Alan! Only one nitpick: of the Seventh Doctor, you state “In his last few adventures, the Doctor would drop the hat,” when in fact this was not the case. The Seventh Doctor wore his hat in every one of his adventures, including the TV Movie (he’s wearing it when he steps out of the TARDIS and gets shot down). In fact, the hat was McCoy’s own; he had worn it at his initial audition for the role, and when John Nathan-Turner expressed admiration for the hat, the story goes that McCoy swiftly responded that JNT could have the hat, but McCoy came with it!

John Platt: Thanks to the audio plays, I have come to consider McGann one of my all-time favorite Doctors. He has had some incredible performances and wild stories, such as the recent audio play “The Earthly Child” where he reunites with his the Doctor’s granddaughter Susan, reprised by actress Carol Ann Ford. His adventures start with the audio plays “Shada” (based on the unfinished Tom Baker adventure) and “Storm Warning.” Check them out at the Big Finish website.
