Additional Facts: In the Virgin published New Adventures series, the 7th Doctor wore a white linen suit and the outfit 7 wears in the TV movie chronologically debuted in the novel Bad Therapy.

As for the 8th Doctor, he did sport a leather trench coat in te Lawrence Miles penned Eighth Doctor Adventure novel Interference. 8 also sported a dark red verion of the velvet frock coat in another EDA entitled History 101 plus a very yuppie-ish look (with the hair in ponytail form) in the critically acclaimed EDA Father Time

Androo: Being dashing and handsome was not the criteria for the Doctor because he was not intended to be a Kirk-style character who woos women and falls in love with every other girl he meets. He was seen as a science fiction wizard-like character, a kind of Merlin with a strange, memorable look who, depending on your relationship with him, would be like an older brother or a stern mentor who didn't let you forget he was several centuries old. Someone who might seem kind but then could unleash god-like anger if he found out you threatened innocent life.

Almost half of these photos do indeed depict scenes that took place on other planets. But the fact is, MANY planets have trees or streets and humanoid figures so, like Star Trek, he went to a lot of places that didn't seem too far removed from Earth. In the Classic series, the Doctor would sometimes spend an entire season only focused on alien worlds, but he often spoke of Earth as a favorite of his, a second home whose people he was fascinated by and often frustrated by. In the new series, nearly every adventure is on Earth, which has led to much debate among certain fans who want more universe hopping.

I've never watched Dr. Who before, but since my cousin's a big fan, I thought I'd give this a read. I had no idea so many people played the character.

Is it a rule that all the actors who play him be so frumpy and hard on the eyes? Oh well; it is a British show. :)

And if he's an alien who can travel time and space, why does it seem he spends most of the time on Earth? Or am I just misjudging by the photos?

Tom Fizpatrick: That was a Fox TV-pilot that I explained in detail in the 8th Doctor section, where I also talk about who played him and what he's been up to since then. I honestly don't know how you could've missed that entire section of the piece, so I can only suggest reading articles before asking questions that they've already addressed.

Can't remember the year, or the network that showed a made-for- tv movie special, and who played the doctor.

Do remember that it was set in America. Don't know why I can't find it on Goggle. This was well before Christopher Eccleston did the first series for BBC. Mid-late 90's, I think.

I_Captain Blanco: I didn't mean he lost it entirely, I just meant we were having more scenes where he wasn't actually wearing it during dramatic scenes. Sorry, I see how my phrasing could imply otherwise. And yes, I'm aware that was his hat, I always thought it was a cute anecdote. :-)

>> No brief mention of the ABC movie version of the Doctor Who or that one doesn’t count?

What are you talking about? There was no ABC movie version of Doctor Who.

Great article, Alan! Only one nitpick: of the Seventh Doctor, you state "In his last few adventures, the Doctor would drop the hat," when in fact this was not the case. The Seventh Doctor wore his hat in every one of his adventures, including the TV Movie (he's wearing it when he steps out of the TARDIS and gets shot down). In fact, the hat was McCoy's own; he had worn it at his initial audition for the role, and when John Nathan-Turner expressed admiration for the hat, the story goes that McCoy swiftly responded that JNT could have the hat, but McCoy came with it!

9jack9: It's also interesting to note that those two were the only companions of the classic series that I saw romantic elements with. Some have argued for Jo Grant as well, but I saw that as a father/daughter relationship.

9jack9: I saw Sarah Jane's wardrobe as a sign that she was becoming more like the Doctor as she got to know him, whimsical and childlike. Romana II was always goofy from the beginning, as evidenced by her immediately trying to pass herself off in the Fourth Doctor's actual clothes and then, when he calls them ridiculous, throwing on a female version with its own 12 foot scarf.

I agree with Roland that an analysis of the companions would be interesting indeed! (or at least a select dozen) One interesting wardrobe aspect of the companions I had noticed in the classic series was how several of the female characters started off very strong characters as reflected in their wardrobe, but by the end of their tenures, had softened their looks remarkably. Sarah Jane and Romanona most notably - to the point where they dressed almost like little girls by the end of their time with the Doctor. (the implications of which is another article entirely)

Ray: I did consider that but then figured "screw it, Shalka was meant to be serious and Cushing was an adaptation, but Rowan Atkinson and co. were just plain having fun and people can discover that for themselves." :-)

Roland: Oh, Sarah Jane. She and Romana, let me tell, they won my heart many times.

John Platt: Thanks to the audio plays, I have come to consider McGann one of my all-time favorite Doctors. He has had some incredible performances and wild stories, such as the recent audio play "The Earthly Child" where he reunites with his the Doctor's granddaughter Susan, reprised by actress Carol Ann Ford. His adventures start with the audio plays "Shada" (based on the unfinished Tom Baker adventure) and "Storm Warning." Check them out at the Big Finish website.

Great article. I had no idea that McGann has been playing the Doctor for all of these years! I just saw him in the new crime series, Luther, which is full of Whovian actors.

Great analysis of the first 8 Doctors' looks, Alan! As a fellow Doctor Who obsessive, I can only say, in the words of the Ninth Doctor, "Fantastic!" Here's to looking forward to your analysis of Doctors 9-11. I can only imagine what you'll say about Matt Smith's bow tie/combat boots ensemble....
