Bluewater announced a lot of “fiction titles” coming in 2011 on Monday, and among them is Jailbait, a comic first announced in 2009 and written by Mystery Science Theater 3000‘s Pearl Forrester (and current Cinematic Titanic performer), Mary Jo Pehl. The publisher describes the comic as a “tongue-in-cheek;” the hilariously satirical (?) cover is above.
The comic was originally supposed to come out this year, but now it looks like it’ll finally surface — along with Mis-Adventures of Adam West, what sounds like essentially a bizarre comic book hybrid of Curb Your Enthusiasm and Being John Malkovich. Starring Adam West. Here’s how they describe it:
The Man, The Myth, The Amulet? Legendary star of the small and silver screen, ADAM WEST, has his career reinvigorated in this hip-whimsical, trans-dimensional epic of an adventure. When a mysterious fan delivers an exotic amulet to Mr. West’s doorstep he is “Dorothy-fied” on an odyssey that will forever change his career, his love life and inadvertently make him the man that saves the universe!
The publishing world could always use more hip-whimsical epics.
Maybe most interestingly, the company’s entire press release seems designed to distance Bluewater from the celebrity bio comics that have been their bread and butter the last couple of years. In late August, Bluewater received a cease-and-desist order from an attorney acting on behalf of Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber; their Bieber bio comic came out last week anyway. The opening lines of the release:
Although considerable press and attention has been given to Bluewater Productions non-fiction biography titles, the Vancouver, WA based publisher announced a slate of new and continuing comic fiction titles scheduled for release during the first quarter of 2011.
“Comic fiction.” Here’s a quote from publisher Darren G. Davis:
“Bluewater publishes about seven titles per month and most of the books are fiction titles,” Davis said. “Next year is shaping up to be a very creative year for us.”
Does this lower the chances for an Antoine Dodson bio comic? Only time will tell.

It actually fails as a parody by virtue of being too tasteful, compared to the standards of actual non-parody superhero comics. For one thing, the woman pictured is clearly of age (and then some), and for another, she’s actually slightly more covered up than Witchblade or Fathom in their most iconic looks.

Isn’t this the same disreputable sham company that doesn’t pay its creators? Depressing that the lawsuit-baiting “biography” comics have enabled them to expand their line. I’m always hoping these kinds of outfits go under.

D. Peace – They pay just fine. So please stop hoping they go under, otherwise you’ll be putting me out of a job.

You really make it seem so easy along with your presentation however I in finding this topic to be actually one thing that I believe I’d by no means understand. It seems too complicated and very large for me. I am taking a look ahead in your next publish, I will attempt to get the dangle of it!
