J.T. KRUL Now DC Exclusive

October 14th, 2010
Author Albert Ching

Teen Titans and Green Arrow writer J.T. Krul is now exclusive with DC Comics, as announced today on The Source.

Krul has a background in Hollywood — he worked in production on Seinfeld — and broke in to comics in 2004 with X-Men Unlimited #1. After distinguishing himself by writing just about every title for Aspen, Krul started to pick up DC gigs with a run on JSA Classified in 2007.

Krul also authored this year’s controversial Justice League: The Rise of Arsenal #3, dubbed “Worst of the Worst” and “essentially The Room for comics” by Comics Alliance.

Teen Titans #88, the first issue written by Krul, is scheduled for October 27. The Frank Quitely variant cover for that issue is above, the Karl Kerschl and Adam Hughes ones are right here:

The most interesting thins about this news are those pics. Except for the fact they keep drawing Impulse to look like Wally as a kid dammit. Stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please?

  2. Acrid_Gunsmoke Says:

    Congrats to Krul!

The criticism of Rise of Arsenal #3 is absolutely ridiculous. It’s a plot point, folks. It’s not like Roy is going to be doing heroin and talking to dead cats for the rest of his career. Let. It. Go.

  3. Brandon Says:

    No.

    Cool pics though.

  4. Ricardo Says:

Wow, what did he actually do to deserve it? He’s a character writer on the level of Geoff Johns, so expect me not to buy his books as a proof of my love for his writing.

  5. Shawn Says:

Robin better watch where he puts his foot!

  6. Kevenn T. Smith Says:

I heart the Adam Hughes cover – big time!

  7. Anthony Strand Says:

Oh, man. This is exactly what’s wrong with DC these days. They keep hiring J.T. Krul-level talents while Marvel scoops up Ed Brubaker, Jason Aaron, Dan Slott, Fred Van Lente, Jeff Parker, Paul Tobin, etc.

  8. lebeau Says:

    Oh joy…

  9. wmj Says:

Great point, Anthony. And uhm Shawn’s right, it looks like Damian’s big toe is getting “ravaged”

It’s this same attention to detailed that has killed this title after Johns left.

  10. Jack Says:

As far as Arsenal #3 goes… It’s more than merely a ‘plot point..’ I read that issue with my mouth wide open like I’d just seen another space shuttle blow up… Just as one of many poor choices, Krul’s depiction of the affects of heroin was ridiculous. That’s NOT what happens when you shoot heroin… Unless DC universe heroin somehow has the effect of PCP….

(sorry for my english, it’s not my first language)
JT Krul ? seriously ? it’s funny, i’m not especialy a marvel fan, but at least like someone else said, they hire interesting writers (hickman, jason aaron, fred van lente…).It seems like DC, now, have just Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison (and I will add Paul Cornel, Peter Tomasi even if they are less bankable). JT Krull is chanelling the worst of the nineties, it seems almost a parody. He is the Rob Liefield of the writers.

  12. Bill Says:

It could be worse. They could have just set the offices on fire.

  13. nathanfromseattle Says:

Totally agree with wmj, this art looks frickin’ SWEET (Frank Quitely!!!) but they seriously need to fix all the Kid Flashes so they aren’t Wally.

  14. Joe H Says:

Thank god he’s exclusive, so he won’t be polluting any other company’s output. DC is taking one for the team.

  15. D. Peace Says:

The celebration party will be off the chain unless someone gets some bad China Cat.

  16. brett Says:

    Joe H:

    THAT was funny.

    And so true. ;)

  17. KET Says:

“It could be worse. They could have just set the offices on fire.”

Actually, that would be an improvement over hiring a corporate brown-noser like Krul to ruin more comic book paper.

Really? Do tell… And you know this, because….?

    And, this is better, how?

  20. Mallfunction Says:

Why is he exclusive now? Was Marvel after him then? I kinda doubt it his writing wasn’t all that great.

  21. Starsky_Hutch76 Says:

Why even do a release for this. It’d be the same level of prestige as “Chuck Austin is now DC exclusive!”, “Devin Grayson is now DC Exclusive,” Ron Zimmerman is now DC exclusive,” or “Some crackhead we found on the street and paid $5 bucks and half an old whopper we fished out of the dumpster to write for us is now DC exclusive”.

…. and yeah, it is a plot point, since Roy Harper seems to be a regular in Titans now and perpetually high.

  22. BoosterPyrite Says:

I actually appreciate writers like Krul, who I think dooes some fine characterization from what I’ve seen. Having read Arsenal and the first few issues of his Green Arrow, I’m actually -excited- to have him writing Teen Titans, replacing that DREADFUL Henderson person who basically sodomized my favorite characters and nearly made me drop the title.

And to those who say DC doesn’t have any great writers aside from Johns and Morrison, let me throw these out there: J. Michael Straczynski, Gaile Simone, Dan Jurgens, Paul Levitz, Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Grey. I will readily read just about anything these people write because they’ve proven themselves to be wholly capable of writing excellent superhero stories.
