Here we go.
Deadline has confirmed that Tom Hardy, who recently worked with Christopher Nolan in this Summer’s Inception has been confirmed to be in the third, and final, Nolan Batman installment. Now, no word yet on what is role will be, so calm down with the Riddler claims. Nolan has the reputation of working with a tight circle of actors, so this casting should come to no surprise.
No word yet on the title of “Batman 3″, but I expect that to come sooner rather than later. Hardy definitely has a look to him, but him as a villain is just uncertain at this time.
The third Batman movie is slated for July 20, 2012.

Kinda has the Robin look to him in the above pic, if you ask me. Just saying.

Knowing how Nolan likes to work against the grain, I think Hardy will be playing Clayface. Clayface is a good B-list villain who can easily be worked into Nolan’s realistic superhero story.
October 13th, 2010 at 1:02 pm
Ehhh… I don’t know about Clayface. I don’t see villains with superpowers fitting into Nolan’s world.
October 13th, 2010 at 1:04 pm
I’m really not sure who he’ll play. The guy’s an awesome actor who can do villain or good guy. I almost don’t want him to be Riddler (if indeed Riddler’s in it) as I feel it’d be too obvious. With how he beefed up for Bronson, maybe Bane? But done ALOT better than how he was portrayed in the god awful Batman & Robin.

Hush or Jason “Red Hood” Todd
He got the build for both…
October 13th, 2010 at 1:37 pm
I think if there is a villain in the third Batman flick, it’ll most likely be either The Riddler, The Penguin or Catwoman. I don’t really see Tom Hardy fitting into any of those roles. Well, maybe Catwoman.
October 13th, 2010 at 2:07 pm
LMAO…a cross-dressing catwoman???? lmao…can you just see the batman and catwoman relationship going in that direction? NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
October 13th, 2010 at 2:28 pm
I’d like it if they went the Riddler/Hush route and did the Hush storyline.
If they did do Clayface they’d mostly have him be the first Clayface who just wore a mask.
October 13th, 2010 at 2:31 pm
Chris Nolan has openly said he’ll never do The Penguin. I love the idea of him being Hush, that’s the best idea I’ve heard so far!
October 13th, 2010 at 2:33 pm
i was hoping nolan would grab joseph gordon levit for riddler but tom hardy is great especially in rock’n'rolla
October 13th, 2010 at 3:09 pm
Recasting Catwoman as a gay man would be genius. Bring on the Catman. Purr.
October 13th, 2010 at 3:38 pm
Robin? ROBIN???? hahahahahahahaha
October 13th, 2010 at 4:09 pm
I can see him as Hush, I can see him as the Riddler, I could also see him as Deadshot, or Black mask… I’d love it if he were to play Simon Hurt, but I think the should leave the Black Glove and Club of Villains for later down the track.
October 13th, 2010 at 4:11 pm
I think it’s important to remember when they were casting The Dark Knight. One of the things that remains clear in my mind is when it was released that “Anthony Michael Hall has been cast in The Dark Knight.” Everyone began speculating wildly about what iconic role he would play (especially guessing he would be Edward Nigma/the Riddler), and he ended up playing “kidnapped TV news reporter.”
I’m just sayin.’
October 13th, 2010 at 6:48 pm
Bruce Wayne’s new love interest. I so want him to play Bruce Wayne’s new love interest!
October 13th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
a young alfred??? flash back scenes. hes english after all. i can see scenes with a young alfred being in it. Maybe some kinda of gangster… or maybe the vintriloquist.
October 13th, 2010 at 8:41 pm
what about Dr. Hugo Strange?

If we’re talkin the original Clayface he’s fair game. However, Super power characters can fit into Nolan’s Batman world. They can be depowered. Croc can be change into a human muscular Australian Crocodile Hunter. Bane can be change into a muscular Mexican Luchador. Etc..there are no limits on modified characters. What? Did we have dip Ra into the lazarus pit in Begins?
October 13th, 2010 at 8:56 pm
The new Ra’s-Al-Ghul
October 13th, 2010 at 8:59 pm
I’m willing to bet he’ll be an ally of Batman’s. Perhaps Jason Bard? That sounds likely to me.
October 13th, 2010 at 9:14 pm
Killer Croc I def want to see that happen!!!!!! …Also as I read above isn’t it time for Ras Al Ghul (sp?) to come back? What about Azrael? might not work for Nolans film though… I can not wait to hear more news about this “Batman 3.”
October 13th, 2010 at 10:12 pm
I knew I knew him from somewhere other than Inception. The villain from Star Trek: Nemesis. He’d make a really good Hush, for sure. I hope that’s the direction they go, but no matter what’s done, I can’t imagine it will be a let down in any way as long as Chris Nolan is behind the camera and Christian Bale is still under the cape and cowl.
October 13th, 2010 at 10:39 pm
Hush is definitely the character I want Hardy to play!
But Killer Croc works in that he originally apppeared in the comics as a genetic freak (not a grotesque mutant) who rallies some criminals together to try and become the new crime kingpin. Since Maroni’s death in The Dark Knight that is an avenue his character could take in the new film. Same goes for Black Mask.
October 13th, 2010 at 10:40 pm
Why is everyone assuming a villain? How about Jason Bard?
October 14th, 2010 at 12:45 am
Perhaps he’s replacing Christian Bale.
October 14th, 2010 at 5:19 am
Again why comic fans don’t make movies. I cannot fathom how/why Nolan would do a continuity-heavy character like Hush. That makes no sense.
I think they should be inventive and go without a “main villain”. These movies always end in a video game boss fight sort of way when that’s in the mix. I want this to be about Batman being hunted by Gotham.

Deadshot,

Riddler, my guess. I figure he’s going to be a local Gotham celebrity. Genius guy who won a lot of game shows. Very clever, knowledgeable, deductive. A real problem-solver. The mayor puts him on the Batman-manhunt (likely to determine Batman’s identity) after finally getting fed up with Gordon’s failure to catch him (because, of course, he’s not really trying).
Meanwhile, the mob (or what’s left of it) decides to conduct a little Bat-hunt of their own. Enter Talia Al Ghul who ordinarily wouldn’t be working with the mob, but the enemy of my enemy and such forth… and she’s quite pissed about what happened to her dad.
Oh dear, I’m getting ahead of myself again.
October 14th, 2010 at 12:04 pm
Black Mask!
October 14th, 2010 at 8:20 pm
@Mike – Hardy got the most screentime of anyone beside Leo, Ellen Page (whatever, she wasn’t a character, just an audience conduit), Levitt (pretty close) and maybe Marion Cotillard in the overrated Inception.
While I do not have a part in any kind of conference calls between Nolan and his personnel or any involvement otherwise in the decision-making process for his Batman moviefilms, I think it’s relatively safe to say that Tom Hardy will not be playing the analagous role to Hall’s “kidnapped TV news reporter.”
Have you viewed Bronson? That’s a hell of a performance there.
October 14th, 2010 at 8:29 pm
The really interesting idea that had not occurred to me right away that I’ve seen posted about in this thread is the idea of Hardy playing a returned al Ghul.
Hartdy would do Hush some justice, but as another poster said something close to: he’s to weighed down. Not a clean character. No motivation other than that which is heavily tied into Bruce’s childhood, pre-Batman life. Nolan has not been too concerned with this other than the training and such that directly preceded the advent of Batman.
Some posts have said that Nolan could/would de-power a villain if necessary to fit his needs. Maybe so. There are plenty of “real”-ish characters in Batman’s rogues gallery (what a silly combination of terms) that have been as-yet untapped, though.
I liked the post saying that Levitt would be a good Riddler. Hadn’t thought of that, but that somehow seems right. Like he’s got the right grin for it or something.
Anyhow, whatever happens, Nolan will most likely do it right.
October 14th, 2010 at 8:32 pm
The Dark Knight ended with Batman as an outlaw. They don’t even need to cast a villain if they don’t want. They could have another hero come in and try to catch Batman if they wanted.
October 14th, 2010 at 9:57 pm
He’s going to play the batmite.
October 14th, 2010 at 10:25 pm
Hmmm. Maybe Deadshot or Deathstroke?
October 15th, 2010 at 12:17 am
Tom Hardy as Dr. Hurt.
October 15th, 2010 at 7:05 am
Seriously, guys, stop with the Hush. That arc has way too many characters which have not even been established in the films. And as was mentioned, Hush himself would be impossible to just insert into the films without aforementioned establishment.
Killer Croc is only non-human or super-human depending on the writer. He’s supposed to be little more than a cannibal with a skin condition. So, he could be used…but I still think it may be too cartoony of a character.
Same for Riddler. Why he seems to be the popular choice, I’ve no idea. He’s not a very threatening villain, and he’s campy.
I second Bruce’s call for Black Mask. Joker just eliminated a good chunk of the crime bosses, leaving a perfect void for Black Mask to fill. And with his hatred of Wayne, it would mean Bats will be getting crap in both identities.

Hugo Strange
October 15th, 2010 at 8:55 am
I think Batman 3 will be very different than Dark Knight.
I think the story of Batman 3 is his one man war on crime as an outlaw, and his realization that it is a crusade with no end except death (unlike his thinking in Dark Knight), whether he is supported by the law or not. That’s the logical conclusion to the story and Nolan says he wants to finish the story – it’s the elements of the Dark Knight Returns but in a different context. It’s Batman versus corrupt police, corrupt politicians, gangsters, crazy psychotics, righteous law enforcers who support corrupt institutions. So I think the villians in this will be one’s that support that story.
October 15th, 2010 at 10:32 am
Black Mask seems to be a fit for a villain. I’m not familiar witht his guy at all.
As a comic fan I’d love to see Hush, but as another guy said…that story is way to involved, and involved far too many characters that haven’t been introduced into this film.
For the most part…these two batman movies have relied heavily on “realistic” things. Croc would have to be toned way down if he were to be the villian. Clayface as well (even the original). The Riddler can be done, and done in a role that isn’t campy. Not saying that’s my preferred choice. I like the idea of a “Deathstroke”…but Black Mask is what I really want.

“Well, I wasn’t supposed to really know them, right?” Nolte says. “I think it helped that we were strangers. Tom, he’s a hell of an actor though. My scene in the hotel room, he improvised this bit where, there I was screaming, he came over and held me. He’s got great instincts.” That is a comment by Nick Nolte, gotta say that it is perking up my interest in the upcoming Warrior and yes from his past onscreen roles, I would say that he is a very very talented actor!
