Superman may be taking a crucial step towards liftoff, as helmer Chris Nolan has reportedly narrowed down his directorial options to a select few.
Deadline has reported that Nolan is looking at five directors to spearhead the film, including: Zack Snyder, of 300 and Watchmen fame; Moon director Duncan Jones; Cloverfield and Let Me In’s Matt Reeves; Tony Scott, director of Top Gun and Enemy of the State; and Jonathan Liebesman, who worked on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot.
That said, the report also says that this list isn’t rock-solid just yet, as many of these directors may have scheduling conflicts that would knock them out of the running. /Film has a cool reaction piece to all of this, weighing the pros and cons of each director (and only snubbing Scott).
Me, I’d go with Jones — if you’re looking for an Iron Man-style success, you need to be able to give the movie its own voice, and Moon had that in spades. That said, if the script is any good, don’t you think Snyder would be a sure-bet, with his visually-striking style? Let’s duke it out, Rama readers, what say you?

Duncan Jones all day. Snyder is very much style over substance and tries to pander a bit too much to fanboys. He’s all about imagery and not about the movie as a whole. Scott is just kind of meh. Matt Reeves does a shakey cam movie and then does a shot-for-shot remake of one the best horror movies ever; not impressed. Texas Chainsaw guy? That’s a joke right?
Jones is a fresh young talent. He can pull out good performances. He can make sets work well even if they’re just minimum. He doesn’t have a name that will wow audiences and only has an indie movie to his credit really. Sounds exactly like the man that brought Batman back to the bigscreen, doesn’t it?

Snyder’s no sure bet at all… I agree with Josh’s assessment of the guy. I don’t dislike him, but after Watchmen (on which I feel like Snyder and everyone involved kind of missed the point of it all) I’d have to go with Jones too. I also agree with Josh that there’s more than a little Nolan in Jones already.
Make it happen, and then got Jon Hamm on board! Let’s have a Superman who really looks like MAN. I didn’t mind Routh at all, but he didn’t really do much to distinguish himself either. He was just the victim of a poorly thought out movie, and it makes sense to go completely new.

I’m surprised… for a change my views seem to be the concensus between all three posts so far.
Jones, all the way, Moon was a superb character study, and honest to god character is what Supes needs at the moment to wash away the monosylabic deus ex machina of the abominable ‘SR’.
I agree with Josh, the chainsaw guy HAS to be a frikken joke, as for Snyder, he wouldn’t know subtlety from a hole in the head and the CK/SM personas must have subtlety to it or it’s going to feel like being hit with a very stupid sledgehammer. Neither Reeves or Scott have the chops to bring off a character like Supes, Reeves would probably hide Supes for most of the movie and god alone knows how Scott would have him, but you can be sure he’d have him wise cracking his way through the movie.
TBH though, I don’t think a new Superman movie should be made for a loooooong time…. I don’t think the movie WB has in mind is the same movie that the fans want….
All this talk of wanting to darken the mood of Superman makes me want to simultaneously, laugh and cry.
