The Gold Exchange Q&A: Dan Jurgens on Time Masters: Vanishing Point #2

August 29th, 2010
Author Russ Burlingame

Rip Hunter, Booster Gold and company may be spending two or three books a month looking for Maxwell Lord, but in Wednesday’s Time Masters: Vanishing Point #2 by Dan Jurgens and Norm Rapmund, all they were looking for was one another. Following the destruction of Vanishing Point in the series’ first issue, the father-son time-traveling team (along with their teammates Superman and Green Lantern) were separated by a chronal blast that also threw the four back to Pytharia, the homeworld of Claw the Unconquered and Starfire (no, not that one—read the book). Dan Jurgens sat down, as he has every month since Booster Gold #6, to talk about the events of the day.

The Gold Exchange: I like the framing device of using Older Booster and Younger Rip as a setup for the Younger Booster/Older Rip story. Is that something that’ll continue through the mini?

Dan Jurgens: Yeah. It gives some insight into the Booster/Rip relationship and also helps provide some important pieces of the back story. I think it also serves to make them both more human while also elevating Booster.

GX: And will we be likely to see something in that future that’s relevant to plot in the present?

DJ: Yes. Though maybe not the main spine of the story. Items of interest and importance will be there.

GX: So I’ve abandoned any theory that Daniel is involved with the Time Stealers in exchange for my original idea that he’s tied into a mystery player, possibly the Linear Men. Is at least one character lying about knowing what caused the destruction of Vanishing Point, or is there a player who’s unrelated to either the Time Stealers or Daniel in play?

DJ: Hmm… you aren’t leaving me much room to maneuver. I’m trying to play this with a sense of mystery so all I can is…stay tuned. There’s a surprise or two down the road.

GX: I want to congratulate you for actually featuring a tentacle monster in your book, after having one on the front! I talked with Marc DeMatteis this week about the fact that this week’s Booster Gold featured one on the cover but not actually in the book, and that this month’s solicitation for October’s Booster Gold also shows a tentacle monster (that time with a cover drawn by you instead of Kevin Maguire as previously)…he had no real explanation for why tentacles apparently make good images for covers. Do you?

DJ: Ha! Not sure what the situation in BG is, but I like to have cover images that directly relate to the story inside. I can’t speak for anyone else but I think slimy, squiggly, wiggly tentacles are rather cool.

GX: It’s interesting – A site at http://www.brokenfrontier.com/lowdown/p/detail/across-the-dc-universe-week-5 features a few “classic covers,” and side-by-side are Claw the Unconquered and this version of Starfire. What made these characters so appealing for the story, or is it just as simple as being old DC characters on a far-off and rarely-seen world?

DJ: Every character has a level of worth and I think this was a chance to play with something a little different than what we normally see. It’s also a way to bond the characters a bit. Claw is interesting due to the mix of sword and sorcery; Starfire also has the science angle thrown in. That will be a them over the next issue or two.

GX: Any chance that this is finally Booster and Rip moving into the Multiverse? With neither Rip nor Skeets recognizing where they are this issue, I have to wonder about Rip’s question: Are they even on Earth(-1)?

DJ: Good question! Let’s just say that Rip and Booster obviously have an awareness of the multiverse that most other characters lack. It’s certainly something we can touch on.

GX: That said, “52″ got a lot of credit not just for reinventing characters like Booster Gold, but for reintroducing the public to long-forgotten characters. Is that a goal with your work on Booster/Time Masters as well?

DJ: In part, yes. In this case I think we have some potentially fun characters to play around with for a bit. Reintroducing them into the DCU by having them interact with Superman and the gang might be something with longer term potential. If not, well, we still get an entertaining story out of it.

I’m loving this book. Jurgens and Rapmund are genius. Well done guys

  2. muthasucka Says:

Yeah, at first it bugged me that it has had so little to do with Bruce Wayne so far. But then I realized – I loved the Booster Gold book when Jurgen’s did it, and can’t be bothered with it now, so I just decided to read this as an extension of Jurgen’s Booster book and gave in to the fun of it. Screw Bruce Wayne!! Go Dan Jurgens!

  3. bill Says:

so does anyone know what happens after this book ends. ie only one booster book with giffen/dematteis making it a comedy vs a serious bg/rh- time master book? i prefer the later myself. never thought BG could lead three books a month but he seems to be doing it for now…

  4. Sebastian Says:

Yeah, it is weird how Booster kinda snuck his way into fronting three titles a month, and 4 issues a month (since JL:GL is biweekly!)

What’s great is, he’s pulling it off!

Does this mean he’s not 2nd string anymore?

  5. Cæu Says:

Seeing the “Sword and Science” Starfire was more than an Easter egg, it was a Christmas present wrapped in one of those one-leg-one-arm-it-don’t-make-no-sense costumes! Thanks, DC for making my huge, quirky comics collection fun to dig through again! I’m going to go long box diving this week. Looking for my Starfire back issues should turn up other fun stuff. Last time, I found two copies of 1st Issue Special with Codename: Assassin!

On another note: I wanted to add my 2¢ to those who have wondered why we needed “Time Masters” when the story could probably have been handled in Booster’s own title. I believe the focus of this book is Rip. We’ll see aspects of his life and history not germane to the Booster book. Yeah, the window dressing is ‘The Search For Batman’ and we get to see little-seen corners of the DCU, but I think this book shines a light on Rip Hunter more than anything else.

bill – I’m not sure how long Giffen and DeMatteis will stay on BG, but Dan has been on record saying that after their run is done, he’ll be taking the book over again. The upcoming Sony project, as well as a few other things he hasn’t been able to talk about, are taking up enough of his time to make any more Time Masters after this fairly unlikely in the immediate future, but you never know; I would have thought that before they announced this!

Cæu, Clearly you’re right, and especially this month. Rip being on the cover completely independent of Booster, Hal or Superman is very telling.

  7. Kevin Says:

I’m surprised you even think its Daniel in the Supernova costume. I think the big reveal will be that ‘Supernova’ is Older Booster, once again up to his old tricks of helping without people realizing it.

  8. DarkeSword Says:

I really wish this book wasn’t $3.99. It sounds like it’s awesome and I loved Dan’s run on Booster’s main title. I guess I gotta wait for the trade.

  9. Andy Says:

I love the exposure Booster is getting with these 3 titles. Generation Lost is such a treat every 2 weeks, and I will be sad when the 26 issue run is over. I was sad to see Dan leave the main BG title, but Time Masters is a great extension to his run on BG. Giffen and DeMatteis are rocking the main title too, which I understand some people aren’t keen on, but I’m loving it as well.

Dan, you did a great job this issue of making Booster a sympathetic character. Truly the Greatest Hero You’ve NEver HEard Of!

  10. Russ Burlingame Says:

@Kevin – That occurred to me, as did the possibility of Supernova being Waverider. But with no hard evidence yet and Dan confirming last time that Daniel has a benefactor behind the scenes, I’m just working with the assumption for now.

  11. anthony Says:

loves the ammount of BG exposure, although I really hope that Booster dosent turn into D.C’s deadpool (the 20 apperences a month is overkill)

  12. Robt. Says:

Hey Russ, just wanted to thank you for the great interviews with Dan and Marc. Any chance the Gold Exchange be chatting with Judd Winnick about Generation Lost? I’d love to hear whether he has any plans to continue with (surviving members of) the Justice League International after Gen Lost concludes. The book seems to be a hit, I cant imagine DC letting it end after only a year. Although I guess they would need to come up with a new name for the team.

  13. Russ Burlingame Says:

@Robt. – I’ve tried a few times to get in touch with Judd, most recently for exactly that request. I’ve never gotten a response. Frankly I think that he may have reporters he’s comfortable with. Since he’s had such spotty luck with reviewers and fans over the years, I can’t say as I would blame him wanting to control his image. I fully intend to keep pushing, although since he didn’t respond to requests about a regular sit-down I’m going to try and make it a two-time thing–once halfway through the book and then again after it’s over.

  14. Lissbirds Says:

Awesome interview! I’m really enjoying Time Masters, and like someone else said, I see it as an extension of Dan’s run on BG. I love getting to see things from Rip’s point-of-view and he’s quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in the DCU, alongside Booster. You can tell Jurgens really cares about these characters, because it shows in his writing.
