Going Beyond Temporary

August 28th, 2010
Author Russ Burlingame

At today’s DC Nation Panel at the Baltimore Comic-Con, DC Comics Senior Story Editor Ian Sattler told a fan who asked about Batman: The Animated Series that a Batman Beyond ongoing series was launching soon. The fan-favorite character, who has a DVD box set upcoming, is currently being featured in a miniseries that makes his adventures canonical within the DC Comics Multiverse for the first time.

While the fast-paced nature of a convention panel moved moved right along to the next subject, Sattler’s response piqued Lucas Siegel’s interest and he talked to DC, who verified exclusively to Newsarama that Batman Beyond will be an ongoing monthly series after the current mini is over.

There’s been no conversation about a creative team yet, although an ongoing following on the heels of a successful mini often means that the same team will take it on. What say you, ‘Rama readers? Will you buy more Terry McGinnis? And should the same creative team take it on, or are there some other creators you’d like to see take a swing?

Sweet I always though they should of done these tell us what happen to everyone after JLU ended like the Flash and Jone and I always thought it would be cool if they did a storyline when Terry brother Matt becomes Robin and I also would like to see Bright come back.

  2. Phil K. Says:

Best comic news I have heard all week. I have really been enjoying the mini-series and a Batman Beyond ongoing should be a lot of fun. Beyond is the only Batman title I am reading.

  3. Dominic Says:

Great to hear – this series was a compelling read and deserves ongoing status. And yes, keep the current team DC – they’ve earned it.

  4. Erik S. Says:

As long as Ryan Benjamin doesn’t draw it, AWESOME

  5. tridat516 Says:

way cool more bats more bats yeah

  6. batman Says:

If that world is basically the animated Batman Beyond universe, then by telling stories set in it’s past, shouldn’t we be able to see stories in the JLU timeline?

  7. Phil Says:

Get Beechen very far away from the book and I’m game.

  8. Michael Says:

I would hope and think so Batman

  9. EndlessKng Says:

I would like to see it as a future of the JLU/DCAU, but the fact that it’s getting pushed forward at all is good enough for me.

  10. Shawn Kane Says:

I was under the impression that this series is actually based more on Batman Beyond world existing in the current DC Universe as opposed to the DCAU that it originates from.

  11. Roland Says:

Well Barbara Gordon is in the chair in this version. Other than Hush appearing and Catwoman 2 then I can’t see anything else different

  12. Cesar Says:

To be honest, I think they should get a new writer. The art on the current book is fine, not great but perfectly suitable, its the writing that has made me drop this book. Get Paul Levitz to write it, that annual he did a while back was awesome!

  13. Mike P. Says:

There were a bunch of continuity glitches with the show in the last couple issues, so I wouldn’t mind a new writer. But otherwise this is good news.

  14. Woofus Says:

They should totally do a DC / Marvel crossover with Spider-Girl.

  15. wonder man Says:

There’s a Batman Beyond Fan film coming September 6th called BATMAN BEYOND: Beyond The Senses by DYNAMARC Films (www.youtube.com/dynamarcfilms). So, it’s good to see a revival of the character. You can see some images of the flick on the director’s Flickr.com/marcbriatack page.

  16. Dude Says:

Wow. Let’s be honest, this is almost like doing an on-going Elseworlds book, so this is quite the surprise. I’d like to see what other stories could be told. I honestly think it’d be cool to revisit some of the alternate takes on Batman in comics, like that 60s show, or the Burton movies. Maybe an anthology series or something.

  17. Mike Says:

I hope that they will eventually reveal if this is another universe or the future of “New Earth.” They showed Batman Beyond in Countdown as a different universe, but everything since then seemed to be in the future of “New Earth.” I hope that they figure this out and put it in another universe, or else it will just have to be “Superboy punch”-ed out of continuity later.

  18. AJ Ryan Says:

I enjoy the current artist but the writing has been pretty poor and it seems that they aren’t even trying to make it match with the existing continuity of the show. The best part of the mini so far has been Dustin Nguyen’s awesome cover art.

That being said, if they had Paul Dini writing, and Dustin Nguyen on pencils, then I think you would have a killer title.

Dini/Nguyen would make the book a must buy for fans like myself who loved the original series, and the way that those guys gel on Batman stories when they aren’t forced to play third (fourth now?) fiddle to Grant Morrison is really something special.

Private Casebook and Heart of Hush are excellent examples of what they can do.

  19. Darkstream Says:

The current mini-series sucks, but I love Batman Beyond, so put a new creative team on it and I’m there! I’d really like to see the idea [see Superman/Batman #75] of Damian mentoring Terry developed into an ongoing series within the DC universe canon.

  20. lead sharp Says:

And it will run for 13 issues before dyeing on its arse.

  21. Cap Op Says:

    @lead sharp

    obviously

  22. Kevin Flythe Says:

YES!!!!!!!!! I’ve always prayed for an Batman Beyond comic. This is a dream come true, made all the sweeter by my growing apprehension towards the direction the Bat-titles of current continuity will soon be taking.

  23. Roland Says:

@leadsharp, Cap Op: Wow way to go with the positivity. There is a huge market! No one ever expected books like Powergirl or JSA All Stars to last but they are lasting. No one thought Booster Gold would run so long but it did. This is because people have faith in the characters. This is one of those books that will excel because the demand for it has been there for a decade! Who knows it may reopen the door to the Timm-verse/DCAU again but thats to be seen!

  24. Jon Says:

I have to agree with Casar above, I am thrilled they are finally doing something with the character and universe, and the mini is just okay, but the annual was an outstanding one-shot comic, they should really take advantage of having someone as good as Levitz energized and writing again.

  25. Tobias Says:

this appears to be an amalgam of the main DCU and the DCAU since you have both Hush and a Tim Drake that was turned in the Joker (as of issue #3). What I don’t get is Batman #700 and Superman/Batman #75 have evidence of Terry being trained by Damian, but Bruce is his mentor in the mini-series.

  26. Bornonafriday Says:

I think people are misunderstanding something. In Batman #700 and Superman/Batman #75, they are depicting a possible future where Damian trains Terry. The Batman Beyond mini-series is a continuation of the animated series, which is why it is Bruce in the chair, like in the show. Given that they mentioned that the ongoing will start right after the end of the mini-series, it is likely that the ongoing will be a continuation of the animated series and mini-series, so not to do with the potential future of New Earth, but of the an alternate Earth.

  27. Aaron Thall Says:

    YES! YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES!!!!!!!!

FINALLY! A DC title I can buy without even opening the cover. Terry’s by far my favorite DC hero and the ONLY DC hero to make my top ten favorites.

Definitely adding this to my pulllist.

My only complaint? It’s about 10 years overdue.

  28. demoncat Says:

cool been wishing batman beyond would return again liked the adventures of Terry taking over for an aged bruce. which included the joker no longer around and a new bats rogue. and given that its a bat book it will last a long time.

  29. Coming Curse Says:

Wow. A comic book based on a cartoon spun off from another cartoon based on a comic book. Talk about beating a dead horse.

  30. Unit99 Says:

BRING PAUL DINNI TO WRITE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. Esteban Pedreros Says:

I like what Adam beechen is doing with the character, but I can’t say I’m happy with Ryan Benjamin’s work. I’d like to see somebody else… maybe a reunion of Beechen and Freddie Williams after their run with Robin a few years back.

  32. chris Says:

the only thing i didn’t like about the mini is that it wasn’t an ongoing

  33. PeteMS Says:

Awesome – i hope Booster Gold will someday pay Terry a visit ;) That would be great! Maybe in Flashpoint…??

  34. Ian Says:

DC, on the cutting edge of ten years ago as usual.

  35. Darkstream Says:

    @Bornonafriday

But, the question is… Will this new Batman Beyond ongoing series continue from the DCAU as Superman/Batman Annual #4 and the Batman Beyond mini-series did – OR will it be placed within the DCU like Batman #700 and Superman/Batman#75 were?

  36. Bazell Says:

    @ Darkstream

From their language, sounds like it will come right on the heels of the mini and it’s continuity.

  37. Batfan86 Says:

Sweet. They better not mess this up. Batman Beyond could be huge if the stories are good.

  38. Max Glay Says:

Only if there new creative team. I dropped current mini ’cause of its suckness.

  39. PeteMS Says:

hmm… i kinda like the current creative team – i think their style fits

  40. Johnny Blaze DCU Says:

Has to be one of the other 52 worlds. The Return of the Joker plot makes for one big continuity issue, let alone the lack of Damien.

Will Booster Gold and Rip Hunter turn up and say “Hmmmm… something is DEFinitely not right here.”?

Or how about in the other direction? Will Brainiac 5, Saturn Girl and the gang pop up in their time bubble and say “This doesn’t match our records”?

  41. Mundungus Says:

I will definitely pick up a Batman Beyond ongoing.

I would like to see a different creative team take a stab at it, or at least a different artist.

  42. Richard Says:

Excellent news! So after issue 6 of the mini, will it continue into an issue 7, or will it start again at #1?
