I like the line up at the moment, they have the big four - Thor, Iron Man, Hulk and Captain America. All of whom have had their own 'introduction movie' so there wont be any need for tons of 'who they are' filler.
Black Widow and Fury also fall into this been in a movie so far and with those two you can see why Hawkeye fits and so he should.
I am disappointed that both Hank and Janet (ant-man and wasp) are not going to be in the main line up. Ok so Ant-Man kind of sucks but its not the only superhero persona Hank has ever gone by.

but as a total New Avengers Fan Boy give me Wolverine, SpiderMan, Spider-Woman and Luke Cage - Yeah I know never going to happen but would be a cool film. :)

Scarlet Witch is always a good choice. Joss could do wonders with that character.

As long as it's not another Hale Berry Catwoman I'm good with it. Just sayin'.

Tempest in a tea pot. Other sites, indeed an "article" (more like editorial) are calling this flick a 'sausage fest'...BEFORE it is even out.

Let's face it, the Avengers, in most fans minds, consist of the 'big three' and all of them will have had individual movies explaining their origins already. Adding a lot more 'new' characters and explaining their origins will eat up valuable screen time. Remember, they can't use "oh were mutants" to explain everything and to 'do a quickie' origin on other members would be a diservice to those heroes/characters.

What I think will happen is that Marvel will introduce other characters, such as The Wasp and Ant-Man in the next Avengers movie. Also, Nick Fury and Agent Coulson are NOT Avengers! So really, the Avengers are Thor, Iron Man, Cap, Widow and Hawkeye. Who knows what role the Hulk will play. I feel confident though that there will be other strong female characters in the Avengers and some new heroes introduced for Avengers 2 and/or use The Avengers as a launching pad for their own films.

Also, using Avengers as a launching pad for any solo hero, MALE OR FEMALE is a good idea, b/c let's face it, no matter what their gender, they will be total unknowns in the minds of the general public, so yeah, launch their films with an intro in one of the most anticipated movies of, dare I say it, all time?

Female Avengers they could use I think - The Wasp, Jocosta, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Photon (however, I have always thought she is too powerful of a character), Hellcat (comparisons to Cat-Woman in uniform anyway, may exclude her), Tigra, Sersi (already have a god on team, why need an Eternal?), Firestar...

HOWEVER, we DON'T KNOW who has what rights! Maybe Scarlet Witch falls under the FOX deal or Spider-Woman with SONY and who knows where other characters are. The pool that Marvel has to draw from of 'real' Avengers could be smaller than you think. Also, maybe some of these characters could be being 'saved' for a non-Avengers movie...Remember Marvel while it does have a vast library it has to be smart about how and who they use to keep making successful movies.

Finally, any new character also has to make sense for the story that has been written or thier long-term plan, of which, we are not privy to.

So, instead of making this an issue of 'gender politics', let's just hope for a good movie that serves as a springboard to bigger and better things, and yes, more of our favourite characters making their way to the silver screen, regardless of gender.

That is all.

I would bet that Joss's statement means not only love interests, but also villains and pre-superpower future Avengers, such as Carol Danvers, Jessica Drew or Greer Grant.

o noes no females/broads! Wasp is a pathetic character.

Scarlet Witch, if they cast the right person, would work. And how about Jocasta for sequel if they even get this far.

And make Carol Danvers Ultimate Captain Mark Bendis.

Definitely missed out on the Wasp and I would have preferred She Hulk over Hulk as I do in general.
A pre-Ms. Marvel Carol Danvers sounds like a great possibility too as mentioned above.
There will probably be a female villain or two. Maybe Enchantress?

I get why no one gets too thrilled over Ant-Man and the Wasp, but they're the founding members. This makes me very, very sad.

Also, Scarlet Witch and the Vision are my favorite Avengers, so...ya know...

Agents Carter and Hill would not, I believe, be out of place. Potts as the effective number two at Stark Industries in the movies shown thus far, likewise.

The likes of Janet Van Dyne AKA the original Wasp, and a few others to be found in the Marvel Universe Handbook's various editions over the decades would be at least as welcome, though.
