"Bunny slippers" was the Incredible Hulk #390.

Coincidentally, that issue featured yet ANOTHER Hulk style variant -- the Hulk in Clark Kent glasses.

Apparently, they really work. Rick Jones says he was totally fooled.

Wasn't there an issue during the Peter David/Professor Hulk - era where he went into battle with a pair of really freaky-big bunny slippers Betty had given him?

For everyone complaining about "complimentary" (or "complementary" as the case may be), apologies. When I wrote this, I was still suffering from the flu and on meds, so I honestly don't remember if I rewrote part of that paragraph and forgot to eliminate the first part of that sentence or if I just had a brain-gaff and meant to use another word instead. Either way, it escape my and my proofreaders notice and I apologize for the crime of misusing a word. It'll be fixed.

For those complaining about the chronological order, I stated at the beginning that I would not be doing the outfits chronologically because it made more sense for me to organize it this way. Please keep in mind, these columns are about design and fashion and while they provide background info in parts, they are not meant to be biographies of each character I discuss. I understand if that bothers you, which is why I also pointed out throughout the article that certain images of the Gray Hulk were taken from stories "years later", etc.

Now for more specific answers:

VICHUSSMITH: Seriously!

MARTIN GRAY: I jokingly called it a "Tim Gunn" suit because it looks very much like the style of suit Tim prefers. And, in fact, he wore a suit identical to that when he and I first discussed the Hulk.

RICH: 49 friggin' jpegs weren't enough for you? :-)

JONSTUMP: After doing the Cable S.T.Y.L.E. column, I figure I'm ready for anyone's crappy costume now.

ANDREW KELLEY: Some of those are already underway.

JOEFIXIT: E-Mail me and I'd be happy to discuss your concerns further.

VINNIE: I do recall that from the past. Worth a good chuckle, much like how I laughed at Edward Norton saying no to purple pants.

RYAN: Thanks. And I will consider Booster Gold, though off the top of my head that does seem as if it would be a fairly short piece. Then again, so was Daredevil.

CHRIS ULICHNEY: You know, I was thinking about that very thing today.

PRESIDENT KANG: I figured I'd already rambled on too long with the Hulk as it was that there was no need to discuss a possible future, especially when I have plans for a "Future Incarnations" column.

JAMES BLIGHT: You know, I've hung out with Peter and his wonderful wife Kathleen on several occasions and we even talked about that and somehow I still got it wrong. I could blame it on the sickness and drugs, but screw it, sometimes we just make a mistake. :-)

"After years of being a rampaging child with a limited vocabulary, the Hulk was reverted back to his initial gray incarnation by writer Peter David."

Actually, it was Al Milgrom, in The Incredible Hulk #324, who brought back ol' Greyskin. Peter David did a fill-in for #328 and only became the series writer in #331.

David himself notes how often he has to correct people on this point.

Sorry, I don't know where that superfluous "g" came from, Martin.
Fun fact: the tank top/muscle shirt/wife beater shows up in the top 5 of "items of clothing I refuse to ever wear."

Marting Gray:
A more mainstream (or less offensive than "wife beater") name for that kind of shirt in North America would be "tank top."
Or sometimes "muscle shirt" for something more slangy but more acceptable.

Future Imperfect is one of my favourite, if not total favourite, Hulk story ever. But it does kinda bug me in that book for the most part he's wearing that V-neck brown thingie. Maestro's pimpin' style more than makes up for it. (Speaking of which, it would have been sweet to include Maestro in this article but it's pretty in-depth as it is)

just want to point out that blue and green are NOT complimentary colors. don't ask me why they are called "complimentary" but complimentary colors are oppisite of each other, such as red and green, blue and orange & yellow and purple.

I recall a bit from a Peter David comic where we find out that some company made a massive overrun of super-stretchy purple pants which presumably Banner has been buying up. He loves throwing gags like that in his books.

I really enjoy your article, however at the risk of sounding like a nerdy fanboy, I really think the article works better when you keep to chronological order. As a self professed non fanboy it bothered me to see images from the joe fixit days describes as though the were part of the first grey hulk, so I can only imagine how nutty it made real fanboys. Anways that's my gripe, love the article it's amongst the highlights of my week.

I enjoy these articles but way too often the information provided on the characters back-story is a little off. It might pay to research a little bit more thoroughly.

Also, Blue and green complimentary colors? that is just insulting to anyone who knows anything about art.

Love the article! Cant wait to see more! I also would like to see Wonder Man because that guy has had SO many bad outfits its any ones guess as why he was ever taken seriously. I also wouldn't mind seeing Nick Fury, Night Crawler, Wolverine, or Hank Pym from Marvel; And Joker, Lex Luther, Green Lantern, or Flash from DC. And the Doctor Who article is a must. But who am I to tell you who to write about. As long as these articles keep coming out Im happy because I wont make similar mistakes with my characters!

Wow that was an epic post. As soon as I read you were doing The Hulk I thought, "That's a lot of crappy costumes."

I was always a fan of the Mr. Fixit look. He was a snazzy. Although I'm a big fan of Pinstripe suits.

Excellent as always, and the Joe Fixit look will always be a favorite of mine.

I'm also both pleased and saddened that Clown Hulk didn't make an appearance from his one-panel mental cameo back in Jenkins' run. He's Hulk...AND he's a clown!

Fun piece, as ever, I look forward to watching the video later.

'Sleeveless shirts with a neckline that goes down half your chest' I know that in the US a vest is what we in the UK term a waistcoat, but is there no term for what we call a vest (ie this thing). I never liked the term 'wifebeater'.

I'm curious as to what makes a suit a 'Tim Gunn suit'. That sharp suit just looks like a sharp suit.

WOW. For a guy who wears little in comparison to other superheroes, Hulk has quite a history. This is my favorite so far.

PALMER45: Don't even get me started on the disappearing mustache or why Red Hulk seems to get black nail polish out of nowhere at times.

I have long considered doing something on the Doctor and am trying to figure out a clever and consistent approach to it. It's not as easy to criticize "does this suit our character" when dealing with a character who, by nature, alters his point of view and appearance every few years. Lex Luthor and Wonder Man are definitely on my list of those columns yet to come, rest assured.

I've also wondered why Marvel never had Banner go to the FF and ask Reed for some stretchable clothing. But what infuriates me more is about the Red Hulk and his lack of mustache...where does it go! I wonder how that would look on him though. Not a fan of the Grizzly Adams look the Maestro had, but I think the Red Hulk can pull off having some facial hair.

And I know it's not really in the realm of comics but what about The Doctor (of Doctor Who) through the ages? Or maybe some of the zany outfits Lex Luthor has worn? The safari jacket wearing Wonder Man?
