Ready for a new Dynamic Duo? Think Dustin Nguyen and Stephanie Brown, as the artist of Batman: Streets of Gotham will be moving on to draw Batgirl starting in November.
The series, which will team him up with writer Bryan Q. Miller, will allow Nguyen to help design a brand new rogues gallery for Steph to combat, according to a statement on the Source.
“This is definitely going to be an exciting venture for me, besides the outline Bryan has for us, I’m just plain excited to be drawing Batgirl,” Nguyen told the Source. “This latest incarnation of her has lots of the aesthetics of the original Babs that I love and some new ones. It’ll take me some getting used to drawing a female in horns, but I’m looking forward to putting away the ‘mean and moody’ for a while and kick in the ‘fun and sexy.’”

isn’t this kind of a downgrade from drawing a regular Batman book with Paul Dini?
August 13th, 2010 at 8:25 am
This is in no way a downgrade. This is the second best Bat-book out there right now, following Red Robin as the best.

Not if numbers mean anything.
Sales for July
71-BATGIRL #12
86-BATMAN STREETS OF GOTHAM #14

To be honest, I always thought Streets of Gotham wasn’t high profile enough for Nguyen (who is, in fact, the bees knees AND the cat’s pajamas at the SAME TIME). Batgirl feels like a step down.
August 13th, 2010 at 8:48 am
Now all that’s left is the official “Jamal Igle on Birds of Prey” announcement.
August 13th, 2010 at 9:00 am
Excellent news. This is one of my favorite series, and Nguyen is one of my favorite artists (although I really like the current artist, too).
August 13th, 2010 at 9:09 am
Isn’t “Streets of Gotham” being cancelled in the wake of “Batman Inc.” ?
August 13th, 2010 at 10:17 am
To me it´s a downgrade in the artist section. I don´t like his work.
August 13th, 2010 at 10:34 am
I’m going to really miss Lee Garbet. His art was perfect for this title. It was bright and fun, just like the writing. I don’t get that vibe from Nguyen’s work. Maybe he’ll bring something different than from what he’s done in the past.
August 13th, 2010 at 10:41 am
Lee is definitely going to be missed, but I’m a big fan of Dustin’s as well, so I feel safe that the book is going to continue to be fantastic. Like Nate said, one of the two best Bat-books right now (and two of my current favorites, period).
August 13th, 2010 at 10:48 am
what?! this blows, men
August 13th, 2010 at 11:15 am
Nguyen’s style will give this book “style” and finesse.
Sure, I like the current team, its great in fact, but it’s fun to see new styles sometimes.
And in this case it fits well with the character.
August 13th, 2010 at 2:13 pm
I am looking forward to this. I am loving the ‘Batgirl’ title and think that Nguyen will really compliment Miller’s stories.
August 13th, 2010 at 3:19 pm
nicee, !!! I’m just glad this title seems to be sticking around for a little while longer.
August 13th, 2010 at 3:32 pm
What happened to the Batgirl before this chick? Why didn’t they stick with C. Cain? She was an awesome Batchick!! This new one is soo lame looking. Racist bastards! This new artist must be stupid to draw for these racist bastards. I’m white and I don’t agree for what they’ve done. Blonde hair and pick outfit? Oh yeah that’s intimidating to the bad guys.
August 13th, 2010 at 3:47 pm
it’s a purple outfit actually,.. much more intimidating !!!

I’m guessing you missed the character derailment that happened beforehand since Infinite Crisis. Adam Beechen turned Cass into pure poison and a shell of the character she was once before. The miniseries last year made things worse. Unfortunate as replacing an Asian with white girl was, this more of a refreshing of a cowl that had gotten defiled by an idiot.
Good luck to Nguyen. I love his work.

Please NO… never utter those words in the same sentence… I want Birds of Prey to keep being good.
August 13th, 2010 at 5:53 pm
should be an interesting shift for the book and i def think this means the end for “streets”. have to say it didn’t appeal to me much, not even the title. for such an acclaimed writer Dini ain’t bringing in the sales for DC.
August 13th, 2010 at 5:58 pm
@Freshoreste
In what universe is Ed Benes better than Jamal Igle.
August 13th, 2010 at 6:19 pm
@ Debaser
In this one.
Igle is a great choice for a book like Supergirl, where the title character is an adolescent and shouldn’t appear at all attractive, but not on Birds. Of all the artists working in comics today, Igle is among the worst choices that DC could make for BoP.
August 13th, 2010 at 7:47 pm
Goodbye Batgirl, even when the stories are half-way decent, the art will be the final straw on this book. That cover looks gawd awful, and Steph looks like a dork.
August 13th, 2010 at 11:13 pm
Great news. Dustin is awesome. He will bring and edge to the book that it currently lacks. And for the nay sayers did you not look at the picture that was posted? So sick!!.
August 14th, 2010 at 5:08 am
I think Nguyen’s pencils will bring a grittier look to the stories, which means the book will have a more realistic edge to it. I think this is welcome news, although I don’t know what it means to the future of BSOG.
August 14th, 2010 at 8:44 am
I still think that Ultimate Batgirl costume sucks, sorry but I do it just doesn’t work for me that figgin thigh pouch get rid of it . I remember when Robin( tim drake) had it for a while and it sucked then.
August 14th, 2010 at 10:45 am
Definitely sad that Lee is leaving. Much like Amanda Conner on Power Girl, I think Lee Garbet’s art was a huge part of the series’ charm. The last thing I want is a ‘grittier look’ or more ‘realistic edge’ which would just make this series like virtually every other book DC puts out.
August 14th, 2010 at 1:21 pm
@Ao
Jamal igle smokes Ed Benes talent wise. Birds of Prey would only be stronger with him as the artist.
August 14th, 2010 at 8:17 pm
@ Radomski
If Igle is so much stronger talent-wise, why doesn’t he ever use his talent?
I’ve been buying BoP since before it was an ongoing, and I have no doubt that Igle would be the worst fit for the book ever.
August 15th, 2010 at 1:13 am
Kinda sad to see the current art team leaving and sadder to lose the amazing cover art we’ve been having, but I like Nguyen’s work too so I’ll remain optimistic. This will be a pretty big shift for the book in terms of style, so it should be fun to see where it goes.
August 15th, 2010 at 6:33 pm
@Ao
He uses his talents every singler month, consistently, has not missed a deadline while drawing some of the most complex scenes I’ve seen.

I bought his Firestorm run and his Supergirl since the beginning and I don’t agree Radomski, sorry.
October 5th, 2010 at 1:52 pm
Only the criminally insane would prefer Ed Benes over Jamal Igle.
